Happy Friday! I’m sharing five random things today. First up…
Inspired by Stephany’s reading crawl, I decided to make Wednesday, my day off, a Reading Day. My plan was to read an entire book and I picked this one:

Every Agatha Christie is a reread for me, but luckily I didn’t remember this one at all. It’s a good one! Miss Marple at her finest. Agatha Christies are great to read in one day, because they’re usually less than 200 pages. I enjoyed having a day to whip through this one.
In not quite as happy news, Muffin is in BIG TROUBLE. She got ahold of my new Garmin and CHEWED THE END off the band!!!

I have a super small wrist, so I can still wear it. But I don’t want my watch chewed on! I usually have it on my bedside table at night and use it as my alarm and now I can’t do that, for fear she’ll chew it to shreds.

Let’s talk about something good. Yesterday- tax day- my husband had our return all done and asked me to sign it before he went to the post office. No problem! Except… I signed in the wrong place. I signed on his line instead of mine. My husband was really upset, as time was ticking down to get it in the mail. We couldn’t re-print that page because our printer is broken (he printed the pages at work). He wasn’t willing to trust “Jerzeyguy” on reddit who said it wouldn’t matter. We were stymied, until…
I realized I had used an erasable pen. Months ago, I think it was in the comment section of Elisabeth’s blog where someone recommended these gel pens. I ordered some, but rarely use the eraser- it’s easier to just cross things out. But in this case, I was able to erase my signature and put it on the correct line! CRISIS AVERTED.
Elsewhere in the blogosphere, SHU mentioned this post on parenting. It describes the stage we’re in beautifully: In the last few years my parenting has shifted from “don’t do X,Y,Z” to “look, don’t do X,Y,Z, but when you do, I’m you’re first phone call. There is nothing you can’t make worse by going it alone after a bad decision and nothing we can’t make better. Bring us in. We love you always.”
Which brings us to… prom! Tonight is prom!!! My daughter is going with her boyfriend and I’m so excited! There’s also an after party, Her boyfriend will drive them to prom, but I’ve been recruited to drive them to the after party and pick them up. Ahem. This definitely falls into the category of “don’t do X,Y, and Z, but when you do…”
Did you go to your high school prom? -I didn’t. I was too much of a nerd.
Do you have small wrists? – Supposedly it’s not a good thing- it shows a higher risk of osteoporosis. Sigh.

Good on you for picking them up from prom! You can deny things are happening, or you can accept and make it as safe as it can be! For your Garmin, you can get a new wristband. Mine broke (okay, to be honest, I fell and it broke) and I found a cheaper one on Amazon and voila, all set. It is an easy fix and who knows, maybe you can even get a cloth one (which I like better anyway because it does not smell like sweaty wrist all the time!)
Yes, I was thinking I might be able to get a new wristband. I’ll look for a cloth one- might be a better option with Muffin around.
Oh no, silly Muffin! Why do they do these things??? I like Kyria’s idea about getting a new watch band.
Good job driving your daughter and her date to and more importantly, from, the after party. They may not drink, but they may, and it’s much better to be safe than sorry. I went to my prom, but no after party, and my date and I didn’t drink anything. He was my ex at that point, but we were still close friends and had a great time. I hope your daughter has a great time!
I love a good reading binge. I rarely do it, but it’s delicious when it happens. Great news about the erasable pen! Blog friends are THE BEST!
Julie, you read a lot! I know this from your book reviews. But there is something extra fun about having a whole day to read.
Oh, silly Muffin! What was she thinking!
I would not be letting my kid go to this afterparty- I am against letting my kids be in a situation which would lead to bad choices. Who the heck is allowing underage kids drink at their home- they could liable if anything happens. What’s wrong with having a nice after-party and just hanging out with friends – why does alcohol or other dangerous substances be involved for teens?!? I am not a cool mom. However. I would pick them up anytime, anywhere if they called for help. And we’d talk about it the next day.
And even though I was the biggest nerd ever, I did go to prom- large enough group of geeky friends banded together. ( you had to go with a date- I like the modern option of going solo if desired.) I got to wear a pretty dress, though I don’t think I danced. Some of my kids went to prom- the most recent one only stayed for a half hour because her date got sick.( Which was better than the car accident my sister had on the way to our prom, but still a let down …)
I have thick wrists- I’m built sturdy.
I hope your daughter has a lovely safe time at prom.
Okay, you definitely listed some prom disaster stories! Hopefully there will be no accidents or illnesses. And, I know. My daughter originally asked if we could host a small after party, WITH ALCOHOL. My husband was like, not in a million years. It’s illegal, and like you said, we would be liable if something happened. I don’t know who is allowing this. Anyway… I think they will probably drink a little but not a lot. I’ve talked to her about it but I’ll just have a little touch-up conversation while I’m helping her get ready (nothing like getting your prom dress on while getting a lecture from your mom!)
I do my taxes online. Easy peasy.
Yes. Small wrists!! You can order a new band luckily.
My cat has chewed my oofos. Have to hide them and any piece of paper he can find.
When I go to the lake I have to finish a book.
Oh, I would be so mad if the cats chewed on my Oofos! I’m surprised they haven’t done it already.
After this experience, my husband will probably be filing online. He said the line at the post office was insane.
Team Nerd here! I did not go to prom.
Doggo loves to try to chew on Hubs’s Garmin band while he’s wearing it, but she never goes after mine. His model is a little more expensive, so the joke is that she prefers the premium version. I’ve gotten replacement bands before, so it’s an easy fix.
The Body in the Library was my first Agatha Christie! I saw the 80s TV show in middle school and then tracked down the book. I was hooked! I still like the story, but between you and me, the killers went to A LOT of trouble to do their crime.
Yes, I will agree with you there. The ending was a tad farfetched, but you can’t deny it all fit together and made sense.
The weird thing is, Muffin never chewed on my old Garmin band, but she’s obsessed with this one. Is it because it’s blue? I doubt it.
We don’t have proms in Canada but we had a graduating party/ dinner/ dance, and I went to that. I guess that is as similar as I can come up with.
Bad Muffin! I do have a small wrist but I’d be very annoyed by that.
I didn’t know you had to mail in your taxes, we just file ours online.
Well, nowadays we can file online, I’m not sure why my husband chose to do it the old fashioned way, but I think he was cured of that when he waited in line for 45 minutes at the post office.
A graduating party/dinner/dance sounds pretty much like prom.
Oh Muffin! I didn’t realize cats would chew on things too, I thought that was a dog thing, though my own dog has never really chewed on any of my things! Maybe you can get a new wristband. I have a Coros and I can swap mine out, it came with one like yours but I prefer a nylon band because it doesn’t irritate my skin.
I didn’t realize that about smaller wrists! I have a petite build though so it would be weird if I didn’t have small wrists. I am probably at risk of osteoporosis though which is another good reason to strength train!
I also didn’t go to prom, and honestly I don’t really regret not going. High school wasn’t the best time for me so I’m not sad I missed out on that.
Yes, I have zero regrets not going to prom- I doubt I would have enjoyed it.
A petite build puts you (and me) at higher risk for osteoporosis, so keep lifting those weights! We’ll keep our bones strong.
I’m going to look for a nylon band. It sounds more comfortable, and should eliminate the chewing problem. I don’t know what got into Muffin. Cats can definitely chew, but usually not as much as dogs.
I do have small wrists. Who knew that was a bad thing? Bummer about the non-chew toy being used as one. Ugh. Prom is tonight. So fun. Our school does prom followed by an after party and there is a bus and no one is allowed to opt out at any time. So basically they have the kids and they keep an eye on them and that’s been a very safe system for years.
I went to prom at the last minute as a junior. Very funny story. I’m pretty sure I’ve written a post about it before, but it might be time to rewrite it. I did not go as a senior. Back then, you couldn’t go without a date and I didn’t have a date. Another long story, but my friends weren’t going so we did something fun together – something that my mom grounded me from attending, saying “if you (aren’t pretty enough – either implied or spoken) aren’t asked, you’re not leaving this house.” I left anyway, obviously. My life sometimes feels like it could be a John Hughes film.
WHAT. I definitely need a re-write of that post! Wow, you couldn’t go to prom without a date. Things have definitely changed! Nowadays kids go with friends if they don’t have a date. Much more civilized!
My first thought was that there is a way to replace the band but I see Kyria suggested that already. That is super annoying, though! Naughty kitty!
I did go to prom both junior and senior year. There was a parent-sponsored after party for the prom at my boyfriend’s school – all the kids went to that as there were games and prizes and such. I never drank after prom because I was too much of a goody two shoes!
Your mini reading retreat sounded wonderful!
I think a school-approved after party is a great idea. I mean, the kids want to do SOMETHING. I also didn’t drink at all in high school- back then the band kids were too nerdy to drink.
Oh Muffin. Watch straps are not snacks.
We had two fancy prom-like dances a year, one sponsored by seniors and one by juniors (although anyone could go). I ended up going to six, but that bears no reflection on my level of coolness; I was a prime nerd. I went to four with boyfriends and two with boy friends. I think I still have a couple of my dresses. The dresses were definitely the best part of the whole experience. I went to “after prom” twice, I think… but none of my friends drank or did drugs, so we just hung out.
I love that you and Stephany have both dedicated recent days to reading! What a fun way to spend a day!
I hope your daughter has a fabulous and safe time at prom!!!! I hope she lets you post photos.
She had a really good time!!! And she loved her dress. I’ll be posting a couple photos but unfortunately will have to blur out her face, at her insistence. SIGH.
I just copied that parenting quote and texted it to myself. We are having some huge growing pains with communication and I spent the night in tears after a not so productive conversation. I needed to read that and I need to remind myself of it OFTEN.
PROM! I hope she has the best time. So I was a total introvert and not very popular. But somehow, I went to multiple proms, starting my freshman year. I don’t know how that happened. I was NOT allowed to go to the Jersey Shore for the week after the senior prom, which was, of course, life ruining at the time.
I don’t know if you know this, but I am a pet attorney. Muffin is innocent. I’ll thank you to refrain from making wild and baseless accusations about my client on the internet. Thank you. (She is the cutest, and I’m sorry she chewed your band. Allegedly.).
Hee hee! Well, barrister, I woke up and caught Muffin IN THE ACT. So there.
I want you to read that whole article- it also talks about the kid going off to college. I’m emailing you.
I love the idea of taking a day to read a book – very relaxing!
Oh no on your wrist band! It’s funny I never thought of cats as “chewers” – can you tell I’m a dog person LOL
I hope your daughter has fun tonight!
It’s more usually dogs who chew things up and ruin things- I don’t know why Muffin became obsessed with that watch band!
I don’t think Muffin did it. It was clearly Foxy. Don’t blame THE QUEEN.
Engie, I’m very sorry but I caught Muffin in the act. She’s 100% guilty. She’s also been looking for the band again (I obviously don’t keep it on that table anymore) so she’s returning to the scene of the crime.
Frixion pens are my life! I use them to mark cues in my score- green for entrances or, black for exits, putple for tech cues. And if the cue moves… I can just erase it and re-write it! I also have the frixion markers for when I want something bolder.
I’m so inspired by Stefany’s reading retreat and crawl that I’m trying to convince my Husband that we should do something similar when we have a kid free weekend in July. It just sounds so delicious to go somewhere and just read.
Ooh! I didn’t know they make frixion markers- I’ll look for those.
My husband would never agree to a reading retreat- he would get too antsy. But I hope you can convince yours!
Oh dear, Muffin. Tsk, tsk.
I read Nicole’s comment about Canada not having prom but at least in Nova Scotia/New Brunswick we have prom and we call it prom. I didn’t go to prom, but I did go to something call Safe Grad which is a party after the graduation night which goes all night, in essence to keep teens from getting into trouble.
Safe Grad sounds like a good idea! I’m not even sure what happens here after graduation, and I’m not sure I want to know.
OMG! You and Kae both had kids at prom this weeknd – I hope it was amazing! My wrists are child sized I guess I’m screwed!!!
oh, and i went to prom 3 or 4 times (my junior + senior, plus others’ junior + senior). you definitely needed a date, but you could bring a friend as a date if you didn’t have anyone you were like actually dating. I think I did the friend thing one of those 4. i went in the era of ridiculous jessica McClintock dresses on everyone. and i feel like there was an after party at the school!? that was actually kind of fun? but maybe not necessarily as innocent as it was supposed to be? ohhh the 1990s!!
Muffin is the GOODEST GIRL and I will hear no arguments.
I did go to prom, but it was not the best experience. I spent the whole night dealing with my contacts bugging me. I think I ripped one of them, but didn’t realize it, so I put it in, and hoo boy, that’s uncomfortable! I was in a STATE. I called my mom crying and she thought something TERRIBLE had happened to me, oops. Nope, just a dumb contact issue.
