walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- It’s All Good. Well, Mostly…

Hey there! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) This week I had some good runs, lots of yoga, and continued with Caroline Girvan’s Iron Series. Here’s how it all went down…

Sunday

45 minute yoga with Adriene deep stretch. I should make the time to do this every day… but I don’t.

Monday

In the morning- yoga with Adriene lower back mobility. In the afternoon, a hot 4 mile run!

Tuesday

In the morning I did Iron Series Day #23, glutes and hamstrings. You guys. There were like 3 sets of RDLs at the beginning and then 10,000 hip thrusts. It was simultaneously boring and painful, and I wanted to cry. I never, ever want to do this workout again, and no one can make me!

Later in the day I did Adriene’s deep stretch again.

Wednesday

Since I didn’t work, I ran in the morning. 5 miles, which was my longest run since my race. I’m starting to crave longer distances again!

In the afternoon I did Adriene’s yoga for hips and lower back release.

Thursday

In the morning, Iron Series Day #24, full body. Later in the day, Adriene’s yoga for psoas. And, somewhere in all of this I’ve hurt my wrist. I don’t want to blame the yoga, but I fear that’s what did it. I’ve tried to be careful, but there have been some planks and down dogs in there. How many times will I have to learn that I CANNOT do planks, pushups, or anything where my hands are flat on the floor??? I just can’t. SIGH.

Friday

In the morning- yoga for lower back pain. It’s an oldie but goodie- no planks or down dogs. The only modification I have to make is when I’m in tabletop position, I’m on my fists- no big deal.

In the afternoon- 4 mile run. It was hot, but the clouds came to my rescue.

Saturday

I went to the gym at my favorite time of the week- Saturday at 5 pm. I’m sure it would also be great later in the evening, but by 5 pm it’s starting to empty out. I did Iron Series Day #25, shoulders. I like doing these workouts in the gym! When I finished, I ran 3 miles and threw in some speed work. And then I ended with core- great workout.

Oooh, look at those pumped shoulders! Also look at those spindly wrists- no wonder I keep hurting them.

Sunday

I’m thinking of going to the gym again to do Iron Series Day #26, which is legs. I imagine it will be relatively empty on a Sunday late afternoon, especially on a holiday weekend.

This was a great week except for the wrist. It’s not sprained or broken, just very sore, and it’s made work really difficult. Hopefully a day off to rest will heal it up.

Are you doing anything special for Memorial Day? – I’ll be working, but since my husband will be off hopefully he’ll cook dinner!

Summer vibes are still going strong around here! I’m loving the new rhythm of my weeks. Having two days off

Books!!!

The month of June is off to a great reading start. Quantity-wise, that is. Here’s the first book I read:

Finding “Balance?”

Hi there! It’s time for Tuesday Topics, and today’s topic is How do you find balance during summer chaos? It’s funny

  1. Sorry to hear about your wrist! I have the same issue. I will grasp weights when I do push ups and other moves like that as that feels better on my wrists.

I had a good week of workouts with lots of OTF classes! I’m going to one this morning but since we have no plans today, I’m going at 8:45 instead of 7:30. I envisioned sleeping in as I hoped the boys would sleep in a hit after a busy day but alas Will was yelling for me at 6:15. He was up at 5:30 yesterday so it’s an improvement but not as late as I was hoping!

    1. Yes, if I HAVE to do pushups (like in a Caroline Girvan workout) I’ll hold dumbbells rather than put my hands down flat.
Ugh, kids never get the memo that it’s a holiday weekend! Just wait a few years… you’ll be angrily rousing him out of bed at noon when he’s a teenager.

  2. I’m not surprised you’re itching for longer runs. That’ll happen! 🙂

I’m so sorry to hear that your wrist/s are bothering you during push-ups and high planks. I’ve been having to do high planks, down dogs, etc. from my fists rather than flat hands for several years. I also have wrist braces that I use for my core classes – they help a lot. Text me if you’d like a link to check them out.

    1. Thanks Deborah! Yes, fists should help. I guess I got a little cocky and thought I could “try” a couple planks with my hands down… nope!

  3. It’s frustrating when an injury comes at you sideways like that. Another thing I’ve heard for protecting wrists is to do those moves holding weights — probably similar to using fists but maybe a different angle.

I bet you are right about the gym being empty later today — enjoy!

    1. I will find out soon! I’m heading there in an hour. And I do pushups holding weights- that’s why I think it was the yoga and not strength training. Dumbbells just don’t seem like a yoga thing.

  4. I’m sorry about your wrists, that makes your job tough! Utilize those elbows for back massage I guess.

I’m struggling right now with my strength training. I want to do it 5 days a week, but I wake up in the middle of the night in pain. I need to figure this out.

    1. Do you mean you do a stength workout, and then that night you wake up in pain? Could it be an RA thing? I hope you can figure it out.

      1. Yes, and for several nights after. It’s my muscles, not my joints, so shouldn’t be RA. I’ve never had this problem before, and now for the last few months. IT’S DRIVING ME CRAZY.

  5. I’m sorry about your wrists, I’m sure that makes your job tough! My left shoulder was sore for several days after my last race because we had to wear a GPS tracker on our packs and it was digging into my shoulder. It doesn’t hurt anymore but it’s still hard to lift things with my left arm which is annoying. Hopefully you can find a way to modify yoga so it doesn’t bother your wrists!

I have off tomorrow which is nice and will probably do a run in the morning and then pool time in the afternoon until I have to go back home!

    1. Wow, that’s annoying! In my last race we had ankle bands with a chip, and after a while it started to dig into my shin. But it was more of a superficial thing, and I just put some KT tape there, which fixed the problem. Yours sounds like a deeper issue- glad it’s feeling better.
Enjoy your day off! It sounds lovely.

  6. Did I ever tell you about these yoga jellies I bought years ago for my wrists? I use them for pushups, planks, and downward dog. They are amazing. Sounds like you need them!

We’re up at the lake for the weekend–for me, the perfect way to spend a summer holiday! Enjoy your alone time at the gym!

    1. Yoga jellies????? I don’t think I’ve heard of them but I’m going to look them up right now!

  7. Bummer on the wrist situation – but it does sound like you’ve got a few suggestions on some aids from this post! I applaud your efforts on doing a 45 mins yoga class. I just don’t have the attention span for that!
I wish the weather was warmer and not rainy here. We haven’t opened up the pool yet and we still need to get the patio ready (furniture cleaned up, etc). I will hopefully get out for a bike ride on Memorial day and maybe get some ice cream 🙂

  8. Ouch on the wrists (I saw in one of your replies that things are feeling better, though). That would be a tough situation for your line of work. You are doing great working your way though that Iron Series!

  9. Ouch with your wrist! Hopefully you’re feeling all better soon. I don’t blame you with wanting some longer runs again! Even after my half marathon I just can’t stop thinking about running. I really need to take it easy but it’s so hard! Nice job getting in some good gym workouts and all of that yoga! Hopefully that helps you stay pain free for a while

  10. It does sound like a mostly good week!

Planks and pushups are just tough in general. I’m with you.

So cool that you are craving the longer distances. You’ll be back to the ultra in no time, if that’s what you are looking for!

I’m working today and my husband is traveling. It’s a quiet day and I don’t mind at all.

  11. It rained on Sunday – ALL day.
It rained Monday AM so we cancelled our lake plans. It was ok since I was way behind on my gardening and I got a lot done.
We planned to barbecue dinner. Someone (me) left the gas on and none for our grill. Plan B spaghetti and meatballs.
A beer while soaking in the hot tub… nice end to the weekend.

So you’re back to training… good to hear.
