walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Soggy

What’s the opposite of “crisp?” Instead of having crisp fall weather, our weather can best be described as “soggy.” It’s still hot and humid, and rains almost every day. Let’s just get through this month! We usually see a change by late October.

It was an extra-busy week with several band events, and on the fitness front, I had a failed long run (sigh!) I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown. Read on for the gory details!

Monday

I started the week with a dark 4 mile run.

Tuesday

Caroline Girvan deadbug workout. and then leg day at the gym, plus hip stability exercises. Still working on those squats!

I knew I had a long run coming up, but as the day went on I just didn’t feel like doing it. It was weird- I couldn’t put my finger on anything specifically wrong, I just didn’t want to do that run tomorrow. I told myself to shut up and forge ahead (foreshadowing- sometimes you really should listen to those quiet, nagging doubts…)

Wednesday

A planned 12 mile run! I felt crappy right from the start- it seemed like I was running uphill, which was weird because we don’t have hills here. I kept going but felt extremely fatigued, my heart rate was high, and my stomach felt terrible (non-long distance runners, look away!- I had to make two pit stops in the bushes). I got to 5 miles and knew I wasn’t going to finish this run- I got back to my car at 7.5 miles and called it a day.

Looking on the bright side, I had some pretty scenery!

When my husband asked what went wrong, I said “It was just my legs, my breathing, and my stomach.” Ha ha… at least my hamstring was okay! But my stomach hurt for the rest of the day, so something weird was definitely happening.

I REALLY needed a good night’s sleep, but because of a band activity at night that involved lots of driving, I didn’t get to bed till midnight- I was so tired I felt like crying.  Arg!

Thursday

Guess what? I’m a mom, so the alarm still went off at 5:30 am. I knew I needed an easy day, so I went for a 2 mile walk.

Tired and cranky walk.

At night I had hopes of doing yoga, but there was ANOTHER band event (who made this schedule, anyway?) so again I was busy and didn’t get to bed as early as I wanted (but at least it wasn’t midnight).

Friday

Okay, I’m starting to want my life back. I ran 3 miles and felt… normal? I can’t remember what that feels like anymore.

Saturday

4 mile run that definitely felt normal!

And I did my hip stability exercises. I’m back!

Sunday

On tap for the day- lots of sleep, waffles, and later on, leg day. I also need to walk if I’m going to keep up with Elisabeth and the Cool Blogger’s Walking Club! I missed a day of running/walking on Tuesday, and I want to stay on track for the rest of the month. And, I’ve rescheduled that long run for this Wednesday, so I’m doing everything I can to make sure I feel 100%.

Is your weather “crisp” or “soggy?”

Have you ever had to bail on a really bad run?

  1. Ouch, so sorry about that stomach issue and bad run! Stomach issues are the worst!
Soggy weather is Ireland in a nutshell! In the winter the rain is cold, and in the summer the rain is warm as they say, even if that’s exaggerated because we can have some long periods of lovely weather, and the variable weather can be a good thing because if it’s bad, the next day there’s always hope for something better! This week it’s been mainly dry and quite nice.
I hope your body feels better!

    1. I have been to Ireland (Dublin) and I can confirm that it’s definitely soggy! I wouldn’t like it- but I believe you that there are beautiful days.
i don’t even think the stomach was the main problem on this run!!! It was just one of the many components that made me feel… exhausted? Sigh.

  2. Our weather can go through soggy patches — like a wet blanket.

Sorry you didn’t feel well this week, but it sounds like you are recovered. I am getting better at listening to my body instead of pushing through to a breaking point, but it’s easier to do when I don’t have anything I’m training for.

School activity schedules can be grueling — especially band during football season!

    1. It’s a tough call, because there have been plenty of times where I didn’t feel like running, pushed myself anyway, and ended up feeling good. I guess I just had to try this one- no real harm done, except for feeling crappy all day Wednesday (and part of Thursday.) Live and learn!

  3. Ugh, tummy troubles are almost worse than hammie issues. I came close to bailing on yesterday’s long run…when I made my second pit stop, the temptation to “save” the run (instead of “pausing” it was strong!). As I mentioned, the last two miles were tough. I was feeling SO tired & depleted (bad fueling on my part), but was able to finish vertical (though there was a nasty toe-trip-up that almost landed me on the cement, LOL).

    1. No I’ll take the tummy troubles! I don’t want to hear anything else from my hamstring for a long time. And again- it really wasn’t the stomach that brought me down- it was the overall fatigue. I was breathing like I was running up a steep hill (what???) Oh well- next week will be better.

  4. We all have those types of runs every once in a while and sometimes there is no explaining it. Smart runner like you know when to call it quits and move on. Your next long run will go better. Hope your weather and your schedule clears up a bit this week!

    1. Thank you Deborah! They are saying lower humidity is in store for this week which should help A LOT. I will also be prioritizing sleep- no band events this week, PHEW.

  5. Oh no! That run sounded miserable! Good call to cut it short. I am mostly do big loop type of routes so there is no turning back… but I am not running as long of distances as you are! I have canceled a run if I don’t feel well though – lots of times! And 1-2 years ago I dropped from the 10k to the 5k on Thanksgiving since I had been sick a lot leading up to that race.

Don’t hate me but it’s been nice and crisp here. But our bad weather season is just around the corner. It was in the 40s yesterday morning and warmed to the 70s which is pretty much perfect fall weather!

    1. Actually, I’m rooting for you to have great weather, because I will be up in Chicago next weekend! I want it to be cool and fall-ish! I can’t wait.
i usually circle back to my car to replenish supplies during a long run, especially when it’s hot (I carry water so I switch out my now-warm bottle for some cold water). It can be hard to keep going if I’m not feeling well! Usually I can convince myself, but this was next-level exhaustion. Oh well.

  6. I think you were very smart to bail on your attempted 12-mile run. It sounds like you might have had a mild stomach bug since you felt off for the remainder of the day. Here’s hoping you can get that needed rest and have a fabulous run on Wednesday!

    1. Thanks Debbie! I wouldn’t have said the problem was a stomach bug- except that my stomach really, really hurt for the rest of the day which was weird. I don’t know- my body just had some sort of all-over meltdown I guess.

  7. Team Crisp-ish. It is very lovely up here, and the nights/mornings are cooler but not at prime crispness yet. Not to worry, pretty soon you’ll have the 90s out of the forecast and we’ll have snow and ice.

I’ve had plenty of long runs that started wrong and never got any better. You spend your whole week looking forward to the Church of the Long Run, and when it gets here it turns into a soul and body crushing slog. Here’s to better times the next time that “church” is in session.

    1. Ha ha… that will be Wednesday, and let’s hope Church doesn’t disappoint this time!
I know- I have to tell myself that as much as I envy all the fall weather up north, I will NOT be envious in January. It’s all a trade-off, and I made my decision, trading cool fall weather for beautiful winters.

  8. Oof, stomach issues. I’m so glad they didn’t persist! So many late night, you must be so tired. Lil Momma and I finally tried the Caroline Girvan Dead Bug video; I thought it was great and am going to do it a couple times a week and LM agreed to join me if I put it on mute and play her music haha!

    1. On good! I’m glad you liked it. But I agree, the music is not my favorite. I’ve actually done that workout so many times I don’t even need the video- I could just put on my own thing. But somehow I keep pulling it up- I guess I like going on autopilot and not having to think too hard.

  9. My 12 miler this week was also not great – but sorry you had stomach issues and had to cut it short! With the issues it sounds like you made the right choice to stop. Hope you were able to catch up on some sleep today. Football and band season really is exhausting (for the parents haha!).

  10. We were supposed to have a soggy weekend here — we’re getting the remnants of a hurricane in the Pacific but it only rained on and off a few times yesterday evening. Today is supposed to be the rainier day and it’s still just dry and mostly cloudy. I was actually kinda disappointed I only got rained on a tiny bit during my long run yesterday haha — but because it was mostly dry and cooler than normal I was able to go further than the planned 10 and finished with 13!

I’m sorry you didn’t have such good luck with your long run though but it was smart to listen to your body and I’m sure you’ll feel better this week!

  11. oh boy, tummy troubles and running do NOT mix! Hope you feel better soon and feel good this week. We had some good weather this week – one day of rain and were supposed to get more, but the storm didn’t come here. I know we’re in for some icky fall wet weather soon, though!

  12. Ha ha have I ever had to bail on a long run? ALL THE TIME. Today I had such a good long run, I had to pinch myself to make sure it was real. Those good runs a few and far between! Yours is coming!

We’ve had such a beautiful fall that I know payback is coming…this winter! I hear it’s going to be cold and snowy. Yay! JK

  13. Oh my goodness, it was beyond soggy here. We are practically floating away. Boo.

No time for anything during Bandtober! Things will calm down next month, right?

I’ve had to bail on runs before. It’s hard, but I believe in coming back to try again another day!

  14. Our weather has been insanely mild. I’m enjoying it, because not too hot to require AC and pleasant in the evenings. I’ve not had to bail on a run, but I don’t run as far as you. I stop at 4.5 miles almost always. Your rough run sounds awful. As does the midnight bedtime followed by the 5 am alarm. What is happening here? Yikes.
