walkers walk… but runners fly

A Full Day

Oof! Today was, um, a “day off”, but somehow I was insanely busy. It made me think of Kae’s recent post about how we fill our days, and shouldn’t we feel like we have way more time, now that the kids are older? HA!!!

(In my case, one issue is that Angie gets done with school at 12:15 because of “senior privilege”, but she doesn’t drive. In my opinion, this is NOT A GOOD COMBINATION. She usually manages to get rides with friends, but I try to be available to drive when I can so she isn’t constantly sponging off people).

The day started with me taking her to school, and then I went for a run. Then I had to get my car fixed. This took over two hours, but I can’t really complain because I was able to while away the time at a nearby Starbucks. Then a quick trip to Target for random items (sunscreen, black nail polish- guess who that’s for?- cat food, and this doormat, which mysterious jumped into my cart (heh heh).

Then it was time to pick up my daughter! I dropped her off at the gym and ran more errands- the library, groceries, and- this is a fun one- I stopped at the pharmacy to pick up the prep for my upcoming colonoscopy. Eye roll.

Then it was back to the gym to get Angie. Back home, I packed up my massage table and headed out to give a massage (so I guess it wasn’t a complete day off, as I had a private client). In my absence, Angie was picked up by a friend and taken back to school for pep band. When I was done with the massage, it was time to pick her up, and when we got home it was 5:30 and time to start dinner. WHERE DID THIS DAY GO???

To be fair, I have plenty of days off that are much more relaxing than this. And I didn’t have to go anywhere this evening, so I’ve been sitting on the couch reading and watching baseball. But sheesh… I’m actually kind of looking forward to work tomorrow! At least it will be a less complicated day.

You might be wondering what I got at the library…

I’m excited to read these, but first I have to finish this:

This book is so, so good. I’m about halfway through, and if I had to give a brief summary I would say it’s about two elderly women reminiscing about their lives. I KNOW! This does not sound like a “Jenny” book. There definitely is a plot, but the part I like best is the deep exploration of each woman’s past. What was Polly’s marriage like? Why did Agnes never marry? What was it like to be a young woman in 1940? The writing is absolutely beautiful, and I want it to go on forever. Well- not really, because I have a whole stack of great books waiting to be read.

When you have a day off, are you usually busy or do you like to relax? – I like a combination of both, if possible- getting things done but also having free time.

  1. That’s a productive off day! And some good books too!
I remember I didn’t like Eat Your Ice Cream- but YMMV. That’s a great Agatha Christie, though, and the classic Anne! (I admit I didn’t love Anne of Green Gables, but I did enjoy the series as a whole.)
I have today ( Thursday) off, and it’s vacuum and laundry day. Maybe a target run, but no fun nail polish. I like getting house stuff done in the mornings, then relaxing before the afternoon pickups begin.

    1. The Agatha Christie will be a reread- hopefully I won’t remember too much. I would be interested to know why you didn’t like Eat Your Ice Cream! And, I’ve never read the Anne books and I just feel like there’s a gaping hole in my reading life.
I hope you get your relaxation time today!

  2. Oh, finally Anne of Green Gables!!!!
I don’t love when days off are broken like that with having to do things. I want to have a full day with no other plans! This goes for my work days too though… I think it’s a damage from my nursing days when I could never work uninterrupted.

  3. I cannot wait for you to read Anne of Green Gables! I hope you love it. Definitely gives cozy fall vibes at various points in the story.

    That’s a very fun doormat.

THERE IS SO MUCH DRIVING WITH TEENS. I literally do not know how families with more than a few kids can possibly function? But years from now, I bet you’ll both look back on the time spent together in a vehicle fondly.

    1. It’s really hard when you have teens who don’t drive! If your teen drives and can have their own car, it helps tremendously. We’re nowhere near that moment though. Sigh.
I’m excited to read Anne, FINALLY!

    1. It’s definitely a Nicole book- and one of the women is an author. And no, I’ve never read Anne! Not quite sure how that happened.

  4. Ah yes, the good ol’ “it’s my day off but I still worked anyway”. I’ve been there!

I cannot ignore the dual raves from you and SHU on Fellowship Point, so I’ve got my Libby hold in. It’s saying that it’s a 4 week wait, but I feel like things usually come in sooner than the system says. I have fond memories of Sleeping Murder, and it’s very much in my mind that just a year ago I was in PEI and rereading Anne. What a great place!

    1. I’m hoping I won’t have TOO many fond memories of Sleeping Murder. It’s a reread for me, but I flipped through it and didn’t recognize any of the character’s names, so that’s a good sign.
Ooh,I hope you like Fellowship Point. I’m about halfway through.

  5. Your day sounds like exactly what my season of life is right now. Pick up, drop off, go here, get there. I’m technically not working, but man every day is full! Overall, I think I’m enjoying it, though. Some days I feel like I’m going crazy! That Eat Your Ice Cream book looks intriguing- I may have to check that one out!

  6. Okay, I am excited for your current library haul. Have I read that Christie? I don’t know! At one point, I was trying to read them all in order, but it is IMPOSSIBLE because the Christie books are always checked out.

That sounds like a very busy day! Target AND the grocery store in one day must be a big relief to have done, but not fun while doing it. No wonder you needed a little welcome mat treat. 🙂

  7. It sounds like a lot of driving around! My first semester of my senior year, I had what we called a partial, which meant I got to leave around lunch time and go home every other day. Luckily I was able to drive because my parents both worked and we lived half an hour away from school so it would have been a pain for one of them to come pick me up, or have a friend drive since I didn’t live anywhere close to any of them. I’m sure it would be more convenient if Angie drove herself!

  8. That sounds like a very busy day off… a lot of coming and going! I guess if I can plan ahead, I like my days off to be „chore free“, if at all possible (but usually it’s not possible, but I try to make it happen sometimes!).

  9. I need to carve out shouldless days throughout the year so that I actually have a relaxing day off. Otherwise I will fill the days with errands and other to do and I don’t feel refreshed at the end of the day. I am due for a shouldless day!

I can’t believe Angie gets out at 12:15!! That is such a short day! Her school is structured so oddly with senior skip days and such!!

  10. I am very nervous but very excited for you to read Anne of Green Gables. I think I might do a reread sometime in October. That’s a very Anne kind of month!

I like a mix of productive and lazy when it comes to my days off. I feel gross if I don’t get anything accomplished but then I feel annoyed if I don’t spend enough time relaxing. Hitting that balance is key!
