walkers walk… but runners fly

Anti-FIGS (and One Happy Thing)

Right after I wrote my FIG post earlier this week, I ironically had a very anti-FIG-ish day. Even as it was happening, I was laughing at myself, so don’t worry- nothing really bad happened. Just a series of small to medium irritants.

It started at Starbucks where they were- gasp- OUT OF EARL GREY. Nooooo! They had to give me English Breakfast tea instead (I mean- I still needed my caffeine) and it just wasn’t the same. To pep it up a bit, I got it with steamed soy milk, which was possibly a mistake (we’ll get back to that…)

When I got to work, I grabbed my shaker cup of protein powder (I add water and gulp it down at lunchtime). The lid wasn’t on securely, and it opened, spilling powder EVERYWHERE, including (but not limited to) my phone, laptop, library book, clothes, and the seat of my car. ARRRRRRG!

In addition to the mess, this meant I had no lunch. But that turned out for the best, because right around this time my stomach started to hurt. Was it the soymilk in my tea? Or the fact that I had nachos and beer for dinner the night before (Super Bowl festivities)? Whatever. It’s really hard to be cheerful and positive while your stomach is hurting.

There was no choice but to start working. My first client was a woman who just wanted to relax. About halfway through her massage, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by a loud drilling noise. NOW what??? I don’t know where it was coming from- they hadn’t warned us that there were any repairs going on. The drilling continued on and off throughout the rest of the poor woman’s massage.

I had plenty of time to contemplate this situation, and I decided that a drill is one of the most stressful sounds in the world. I tried to decide if hammering would be worse, but no- the drill is worse, as it conjures up unpleasant associations. Which brings me to…

the next day (yes, I made it through Monday. This too shall pass!) I had to go to the dentist to get two cavities filled, sigh. I haven’t had a cavity in a long time, how did I end up with two of them???

I’ve probably mentioned before that I don’t get numbed up for cavity drilling. I know there are other people who skip the novocaine, and for those of you who think that’s crazy, I can tell you that it really doesn’t hurt. If they were drilling deep enough to hit a nerve, you’d probably be getting a root canal (and I DO get numbed for that!)

Anyway, the procedure was mostly painless (other than the cost- since when does it cost $500 to get two cavities filled???) but once again, it’s the sound of the drill that’s the worst part. When will someone invent a silent drill?

I can’t leave this post on such a low note. In honor of Elisabeth’s Happy Things Friday, I’ll share a happy thing. Two bloggers were in town this week, Darlene and Debbie, and we all were able to meet up yesterday at Wakodahatchee Wetlands for a lovely walk!

It’a a beautiful park with a boardwalk trail, and I remembered how lucky I am to live in a beautiful location where bloggers like to visit!

What would be more annoying to you- hammering or drilling?

Do you get anesthesia when you get a cavity drilled?

Do you get many visitors to your town?

Tuesday Topics and FIGS!

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. I don’t get a lot of visitors to my town, but lots of folks come to San Francisco, which is close, so that’s great!

I haven’t had a filling in a long time, but I have had several without anesthesia. I ask how long it will take, and gauge it from there. I started when I was pregnant and had a cavity, and I didn’t want to have any anesthesia. The dentist told me it wouldn’t hurt the baby, but I just pictured finding out 10 years down the line that it was HORRIBLE. Anyway, yeah, I really like not walking out of there with a numb mouth.

Drilling vs. Hammering – I think you’re right, drilling is probably worse. I wish your client could get part of her money back, as long as it wouldn’t cut into YOUR pay, since it wasn’t your fault.

    1. Yes, not walking out with a numbed mouth is GREAT. Plus one of my cavities was on the left and one on the right, and if I had to use anesthesia it would have required two different appointments (because he doesn’t like to numg both sides at once.) NO THANKS.

  2. No numbing for a cavity? That’s so bad-ass! I am all about pain relief at the dentist- I had a bad experience once where the novacain didn’t take well and it hurt and the dentist didn’t notice. I had a crown put in this week, and thank goodness the numbing was effective. Crown was $$$ but the technology is so much better than 15 yrs ago its worth it.
An air- hammer would be worse than a drill for me- the sudden pop over and over again…ugh.
I live in a very rural area – so unless you like corn, soybeans, or trains, not much to do around here. Not a vacation paradise. But no alligators at least!

    1. Ha ha, well we do have alligators! They normally don’t bother people (although I think some people are skeptical when I use the word “normally.”)
Ugh, crowns are expensive! Especially if they follow a root canal- I’ve had that a couple times and hope I never have to again.

  3. You met Debbie and Darlene!! So cool! When I saw that they both are in Florida I was wondering whether they would meet you. So cool that it happened!

Plenty of tourists in Cape Town at this time of the year but I’m still waiting for a blogger to visit! (Marcia did come here two years ago, but it was winter (July or August) and we were in Switzerland at the time).

    1. I’ll visit you in Cape Town! Well… maybe someday. I guess it’s a little far away. I would like to visit Switzerland as well!

  4. I think that’s very personal though – I think cavity drilling hurts AF!! I wouldn’t dream of doing anything without anaesthetic. The cost though??!! Ugh!
How cool with such a big blogger meetup! (Perhaps not that big, but more than two!) Bloggers who come over here typically are too busy enjoying Ireland than seeing me, or they just don’t bother seeing me, haha. As long as they enjoy their visit, that’s grand.

    1. Okay, if I ever come to Ireland I’ll definitely visit you! We can go on one of your beautiful walks and I’ll come hear you play music. And I’ll play with Elsa : )

      1. Wow, that would be SO MUCH FUN! You would love walking here. Just prepare for hills! But you’re a trail runner, it’ll be a piece of cake for you.

  5. I haven’t had many personal visitors but this time of year, we get lots and lots of snowbirds here! They can be annoying though as they tend to travel in large groups when they’re on the trails and seem oblivious to everyone else, as well as causing traffic issues on the roads. Even though I love the weather we have in the winter, I can’t wait for it to heat up so they go back north!

Drilling is definitely an unpleasant sound, though I also hate the sound of hammering. Being on the 2nd floor of an apartment with neighbors above me, I swear it sounds like they’re hammering something sometimes but it’s probably just that the floors and walls are thin and they’re just walking around loudly.

    1. Yes, we have lots of snowbirds as well! Traffic gets really bad.
Wow, your neighbors must really walk heavily if it sounds like a hammer! Maybe they ARE hammering, like putting up a picture or something. You never know.

  6. I’ll start with the fun part — how great to see Debbie and Diane!

Drill is rough, and dental drills and bills are the worst, but I think jackhammering in an office building can be bad too — I endure that during our building reno a few years ago.

  7. I had a crummy day or two last week and I labeled my FIGs “defiant” because all I wanted to do was wallow. To be fair, I did wallow. A lot. But, just like you, I found some good things amidst the rubble.

I cannot imagine having a cavity filled without anesthetic! That said, my husband doesn’t really respond to anesthetic so he can generally feel dental work (I think he’s only had one cavity in his whole life, though; I WISH!).

Oh my goodness the protein powder thing. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. I hate when things like that happen. It feels like a waste and even worst… such a nuisance to clean up 🙁

Repetitive, annoying noise is a huge trigger for me. I would not have been able to relax if I was either you or the woman receiving the massage!!! I agree with Coco that jackhammering is AWFUL. Also, just hammering in general. Basically any and all construction noise drives me crazy.

    1. Wow- I want your husband’s teeth! One cavity??? But interesting that he doesn’t respond to anesthesia- so it doesn’t work on him? Let’s hope he never needs a root canal.
Yes, any repetitive annoying noise is awful. Especially when you’re trying to get a massage!!! I was so, so annoyed (and I wasn’t even the one receiving the massage!)

  8. I can relate to this. Back when I was teaching yoga in Calgary at a community centre, they were doing a lot of repairs to the HVAC system and the roof. I remember a couple of times when the noise was just unbearable – in yoga! At another studio, I taught the lunch class, and all was calm until I put the class into savasana. Suddenly there was massive hammering on the roof.
The protein powder I can also relate to. Again, in Calgary, our “pantry” was downstairs in the basement and I was carrying a huge canister of it downstairs. At the time I bought stuff that came in a big bag, and I would transfer it to this canister, the kind that has a flip lid. Well, you can see where this is going. I dropped it somehow and the lid popped open – protein powder EVERYWHERE. And our stairs were carpeted so it was an even bigger mess.

    1. Omg. Both these stories are horrible. I’m laughing at the thought of spilling a “huge canister” of protein powder- at least mine was just one serving!
Construction noise during yoga would possibly be even more annoying than during a massage.

  9. Drilling. Definitely drilling. Hammering lets up somewhat, but drilling is that whine … whining/droning sounds get to me anyway, like if the car air is turned on too high? I can’t take it for long, lol
What a Monday/Tuesday combination! Glad you got to make up for it with a beautiful walk + meeting other bloggers! 🙂

  10. I’m a hard pass on Novocain. No thank you! I hate the numbing/drooling feeling. And I agree that it really does not hurt. The sound is the worst part, I would say. Some people seem to be more prone to cavities. I definitely am and Paul seems to have inherited that as he had 2 cavities a few years ago. I hope he doesn’t have any for a long time. He refused the gas mask they offered but the pain did not seem to bother him.

I think the sound of drilling is probably worse than hammering since it doesn’t stop. Both are awful to listen to. You know what else is awful to listen to? Someone playing a movie out loud on an airplane! I could hear it over the music I was playing on my headphones! I cannot believe no one said anything. He was a row behind me so I kept kind of looking back to give him a hint that that was not a cool thing to do. Sigh.

I am glad you had a high to offset those crappy lows. I hope your phone and computer are ok!

    1. Everything was fine after the spill- just needed a good dusting off.
Yes, and the other thing about novocaine is that the shot hurts! I’d rather feel a tiny pain from the drilling than a sharp pain of someone sticking a needle into my gum. I think you’re right about being prone to cavities- I had a lot of them as a kid. My son had cavities, but my daughter never gets them.
You have to wonder about people sometimes… why would that guy think everyone else wanted to hear his movie??? That shouldn’t be allowed!

  11. Oh no, a very anti-FIG-ish day indeed. I am so sorry. Spilling protein powder is almost worse than spilling anything else, because it’s usually very finely ground and then also somewhat ‘sticky’ (if that is the right word). I hope you got it all cleaned up ok.
And then the drilling… ugh… TWICE! That is really terrible. I hate the drilling sound too.
I had a dentist appointment this week (just a cleaning) and luckily, no cavities/drilling, but the scraping of my teeth when the hygienist removed some tartar was bad enough.

    1. Yes, I don’t like that scraping either! I’m sure they know what they’re doing, but it feels like they’re scraping the enamel off.
Yes, protein powder is very… powdery. I haven’t gotten in completely out of my purse, and yesterday when I saw Darlene I gave her a ride, and later realized she was sitting on the remnants of the spill. Either she didn’t notice, or she was too polite to say anything.

  12. Here’s one for you. My dentist’s practice was getting lots of building work done, which was a bit of a head wreck with the builders drilling and the dentist drilling……😭

  13. I’m glad things ended on a high (not one but TWO blog friends!!), but so many irritants otherwise :/. I too am amazed that you got dental work without anesthesia!

I feel so bad for that poor woman who paid to relax and got hit with that drilling sound. Did she say she had a good experience?

  14. I cannot IMAGINE getting a cavity filled without anesthesia. The shot itself hurts enough. GAH. What a badass.

Sorry you had such an anti-FIG few days. I’m glad there weren’t any MAJOR anti-figginess, although those little annoyances definitely add up.
