Book Talk

My favorite book blog is Modern Mrs. Darcy, and for the first time ever, I splurged and got her Fall Book Preview…

Tooth marks in the upper right corner where Sylvie chewed on it.

It was so fun to look through, and I have several new library holds now, including Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel (it sounds so good!)

Fall is obviously a popular time to talk about books, because the latest episode of The Girl Next Door podcast is their Fall Bookshelf. Lots of great books discussed there as well, and I’ve put The Puppet Show by M.V. Craven on my TBR- I’m always looking for a new police procedural series.

Meanwhile, I finished Fellowship Point. I really enjoyed it. I loved the friendship between the two women, and the very last sentence of the book was very moving (I love when that happens). I know some people have a problem with the way certain plot points tie together in the end, but I liked it. I hope more people read it so we can discuss!

Overall I had a slow reading month in September. There were several books I enjoyed, but I only read five and I’m well behind my goal for the year (I set a goal to read 75 books and I’m currently at 53). Obviously nothing bad will happen if I don’t reach my goal, but I’m going to try to focus more on reading for October (November is NaBloPoMo, so not usually a big reading month for me). As a matter of fact, I have a mini “reading retreat” planned for the weekend…

Or, what’s actually happening is I have a colonoscopy on Monday (sigh). I had pretty much written off Sunday, but then I figured I’ll make it a day of reading. I mean, what else am I going to do? Not much. I have three nonfiction books that I’ve been wanting to read but never get around to:

My goal is to read at least part of all three books on Sunday. It will be… um, fun? And the next fiction book I’m starting is Anne of Green Gables. I can’t believe I’ve never read it- time to rectify that wrong!

Have you read Fellowship Point? Did you like the ending?

Do you set a reading goal for the year? – Yes I do- but just for fun. I don’t make myself crazy over it.

  1. I’ve heard about this book but haven’t read it yet. I like friendship books, as it’s less common. it was a slow reading month for me too, other than weekend afternoons I can’t find time/mental space to read during the week. need to try find more time in October.

    1. Your life is very busy, Coco! And you go to bed early (which is a good thing). In my biggest reading months I usually stay up too late reading.

  2. Goodreads prompts a goal, but I just click OK to whatever standard it gives me and I always blow past the number. I am not at ALL motivated to read a certain number of books in a certain amount of time.

I am on the holds list for Fellowship Point and Eat Your Ice Cream. I LOVED Big Time.

I need to get to the library today; my reading life has been a bit stale this week.

    1. Yes, I’m really looking forward to Big Time. I did read the first couple chapters and really liked it.I think you’ll like Fellowship Point!

  3. I’m reading Fellowship Point right now! I’m only a few chapters in. I love it when a book lands with a killer last sentence. The Nine Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one example that comes to mind.

September felt slow but it was packed with some excellent reads: Good People, Heft, and I’m almost done with Always on Call (nurse memoir). Let’s see what October brings.

Good luck with colonoscopy prep (been there, done that, will do it again next year), and enjoy your reading day. I’m excited for you to read Anne. I wasn’t sure if I would still like it as an adult, and I need not have worried about that. Big Time was great as well.

    1. I’m starting Anne tonight! And I’m glad you reminded me about Good People. It’s on my TBR but I need to bump it up.

  4. I don’t give myself a reading goal. I typically read 2-3 books per week and don’t feel the need to read more. This year for the first time I’m keeping a list of books read just for fun.
Enjoy your reading of Anne of Green Gables. I first read it in 5th or 6th grade and really liked it. I am also going to pick up a copy of Big Time from the library since I’m ready for a new non-fiction book.

    1. If you read 2-3 books a week you are reading a LOT. 75 books for the year would be a lot for me, but I know a lot of people blow way past that number. I’m excited to read Big Time, and Anne. Wow, I have a lot of good books ahead of me.

  5. Gasp- you’ve never read Anne?!? Oh, dear reader- your life will be changed! I just got a notification that the first Emma M Lion book is available for me (I think I started at 96th in line lol) so that is what I plan to be reading this weekend!

    1. I know. HOW did I never read the Anne books??? It’s so weird, because I loved to read as a kid.
Emma M Lion- are you doing the audio or the print version? I only do print and I’ve had trouble finding it in that format. But I should check with my library- maybe they have it now.

  6. i’m about 1/3 through and i really like it so far!!!!! and it feels like a fall read even though they are mostly up in Maine in summer!!

  7. I want to finish the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge this year, but I might not make it. That’s okay, I think. I use it to make sure I read more broadly than I would want to if I just read from my TBR (fantasy and romance would be all I read) and I think it’s accomplished that!

    1. Yes, I agree that reading challenge forces you to read more broadly! I never want to do it because I don’t want to read that broadly, lol. You end up reading some interesting books though.

  8. Good luck with the colonoscopy! My husband has had many and the prep isn’t fun. But colon cancer is so preventable – so very important!
I have that book on my holds list, I think I will like it.

    1. Yes, I think you will like Fellowship Point!!! I’ll be disappointed if you don’t.
I know. My dad had colon cancer and so did my sister. Colonoscopies are important!

  9. I have a reading goal (that Goodreads won’t let me forget, haha) but am trying not to let it pressure me, especially during years where my reading time goes wonky or I get trapped in a string or DNFs…

  10. Thanks for the heads up about Exit Party, I didn’t know she had a new book coming out. I just put it on hold, I’m 167th in line. I’ll probably get it in January.

I don’t set reading goals. Technically I’m on Goodreads, but I haven’t updated it in years and never look at it, so I should really delete my profile. It feels like work to me, which is totally not the goal, right?

Good luck with your colonoscopy prep (boo) but enjoy your down time reading, and I hope all goes smoothly as far as results go. I’m having my mammogram tomorrow, blah.

  11. I have not read fellowship point. Hadn’t heard of it till now. I don’t set a reading goal for myself aside from Read the books for book club and others when I can squeeze them in.

I’m laughing at nothing bad will happen to you if you don’t read 75 books. True. And good luck with the prep stuff. I hope you enjoy the nonfiction choices, but I’m wondering if you might wanna read something a little more far fetched and dreamy to sort of escape your situation of being stuck in the bathroom half of the day. 😉

  12. I haven’t set any reading goals lately, but I am just happy whenever i manage to finish a book (more this year than in 2025 already, so that’s good!). I have not read the Fellowship Point.
I think it’s an excellent idea to do a “reading day” before the colonoscopy on Monday (good luck!). It’s not like you can leave the house 😉
