Ooh! It’s time to get out the Halloween mugs and join Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date! If we were having coffee together (I’d be having Earl Grey tea) I would tell you…
The Halloween decorations are up! Inside my house, that is. I’m not sure if I’ll put up outdoor decorations this year. Every year we get fewer and fewer trick-or-treaters. I guess we don’t have many little kids in our neighborhood, and the older kids go to more exciting areas for trick-or-treating. I might put up one strand of orange lights, just to signal that we do have candy, if anyone wants to knock.

On that subject, I asked Angie what candy I should get. I want to get something she likes in case we have a lot left over. Her response was “smarties and candy corn.” IS SHE INSANE???
What was your favorite candy growing up? I loved Snickers, Heath bars, Mounds, Almond Joy… pretty much any candy bar. Smarties are okay, but WHO would choose candy corn over a Reeces peanut butter cup??? If we give out candy corn, we really won’t get any trick-or-treaters next year.

If we were having coffee together, I would continue to talk about reading. Yesterday I mentioned several sources for fall reading inspiration, and then today the Currently Reading Indie Press List episode for October dropped (for patreon members only- but I highly recommend it. You get a lot of great extra episodes for $5 a month!) Now I have two MORE books on my TBR- The Ship of Death by Kyle Winkler, and Mothersucker by Kim Bohyun.
Mothersucker is a vampire story. I’ve never read a vampire book because… I’ve never wanted to. But this one- described as a “feminist crime-horror novel”- sounds intriguing, and I figure there’s a first time for everything, right?

The last thing I would ask you, if we were having coffee together, is if you’ve been watching baseball playoffs. Now that the Cubs are out of it, I’m rooting for the White Sox and Tampa Bay. Between baseball playoffs, college football and NFL, there’s something to watch EVERY NIGHT. I love it!

What would you tell me over coffee? What was your favorite candy as a kid? Do you like vampire books? Are you decorating for Halloween?

these are sooo American traditions that I didn’t have. I grew up in Shanghai and Buenos Aires, I remember loving plalito de selva from Argentina, my girls love it too. and never celebrated halloween until Sofia was born. I don’t like horror movies so no decor of that kind.
I don’t like horror movies either! My problem is they just don’t scare me. So I don’t find the decor scary either. Do you celebrate Halloween now?
I’m going to come out loud and proud: I ADORE CANDY CORN!!! And I rarely have it because I am, you know, an adult so I am well aware that it doesn’t feel good to each straight sugar yada yada. But still, I have my memories and at Angie’s age I was less tuned into the consequences. Don’t get me wrong, I want the Reese’s too. It’s not an either/or!
I love the yoga skeleton!
Over coffee I would tell you that I’m going on a quick trip with Hubs and one of the stepsons this weekend, and then I’m going to do an insane NE capital binge next week. Let the leaf peeping begin!!! And after that one of our mutual friends is coming to see me, so I’m very excited about that. And then things will get back to…being boring again. But boring is fun…so basically I’ve got a lot of good stuff coming up this month.
You do have a lot of good thing coming up! I wonder who this “mutual friend” is??? And… maybe we’ll send you our leftover candy corn, lol.
I love Reese’s! Especially the Halloween shapes because they have a better ratio of PB to chocolate than the regular kind.
Candy corn and Tootsie Rolls are a HARD pass from me.
Yeah, tootsie rolls are another weird one. I mean the taste is good (if I’m remembering correctly) but they’re SO hard to chew!
Reese’s was always my favorite. Then Milky Way. I don’t like nuts in my candy — or coconut! My husband is totally hooked on the Nerds Gummy Clusters.
We put out Halloween decorations about the week before. As an adult, I enjoy seeing other people’s decorations — it’s not just for kids. 🙂
My daughter likes Nerds gummy clusters, as well as sour patch kids. Two candies I did not grow up with! I forgot about Milky Way- I loved those.
Smarties for you are Rockets for us up in Canada, and I have to tell you, I love them. LOVE THEM. And it’s funny, I just bought Halloween shaped peanut butter…well, I guess they are not cups. But Reese’s. For no reason as we have no trick-or-treaters out here in the sticks. We just have two boys up the road and I just buy a few treats and give them to them. When we lived in Calgary it was a different story! Candy-wise, I love Wunderbar, but you don’t see those often. I also love anything gummy/ fruit flavoured/ sour.
I don’t know what Wunderbar is, but it sounds good. And, you and my daughter are in candy harmony. She also likes gummy, sour things.
I loved the Milky Ways as a kid. Now I find them boring. Of course anything Reese’s would be great as well. We only get 2 or 3 groups of kids and I always say I’m going to buy less candy but then I panic and buy too much. I’ve got all kinds of pumpkins out on the porch and a couple of skeleton skulls and that’s about it! I’m bummed but not surprised about the Cubs so White Sox it is!
Me too- bummer about the Cubs but I can get behind the Sox!
I’m the same- I would rather have way too much candy than too little. If I have WAY too much left over, I bring it to work and it gets eaten.
I love how much you love Halloween! My kids use to have strong opinions about the candy we handed out as well. Reeses and m and m’s were always popular in the full size of course! Sadly, we don’t get any kids coming by where we live now.
Oh yes, how could I forget about M&Ms? I liked the peanut ones!
I really liked the dark chocolate candy bars as a kid, like Hershey’s Special Dark and Milky Way Dark, but my favorite was the Lifesavers gummies! They were rare to get at Halloween but I was always excited when I did. But hard pass on candy corn and Tootsie Rolls! I still really love gummy candies though obviously they’re harder to find vegan, but I’m obsessed with the sour bats and cats from Trader Joe’s!
I’m not really excited about baseball playoffs because the Diamondbacks missed out on a wild card, but I guess I can root for the Padres since they’re my brother-in-laws team!
Ha, you were in training to be vegan! I didn’t like the Special Darks growing up- but once I became vegan I learned to love dark chocolate. I’m pretty sure sour patch kids are vegan- if that appeals to you. Just double check because I don’t want to steer you wrong!
I’m already two days behind on Halloween decs, and will be even further behind after the weekend. I don’t do much holiday decorating (other than Christmas) since the kids are outta the house. OMG, the candy corn! I think people either love it or hate it, LOL (and I’m not a lover of it, just saying).
I know Kim- now that only my daughter is home and she doesn’t care that much, my decorations are dwindling. Except for Christmas- I still go all out for that.
ahh love your Halloween decor and excitement! My neighborhood goes all out – the outdoor decorations are fabulous and they shut the street down to traffic for trick-or-treat, and people drive from all over to come jsut to see the houses. It’s so fun! I’m a big fan of PB cups esp the PB pumpkins from Reese’s. But I also love milky way, vanilla tootsie rolls (in blue wrappers) and candy corn.
Ooh, your neighborhood sounds amazing. My daughter stopped trick or treating in our (boring) neighborhood years ago, and now drives to more exciting neighborhoods like yours with her friends to trick or treat.
Vanilla tootsie rolls- that sounds like something my daughter would like! Maybe I’ll get some of those.
So when I was growing up in Canada there was a candy called Smarties, which was kind of like M&Ms, but not quite. And this is what I consider Smarties and they were one of my favorite candies. So when we moved to the US and I discovered what American Smarties are… well I was very disappointed. Get with the program, Americans!
Anyhow, I think my favorite Trick Or Treating candy – that which I will always swipe from my kids’ loot bags – is 100 Grand. Twix is a close second.
Oh yes I also forgot about 100 grand! And Twix- I used to love those. Yes, if you thought US Smarties were going to be like M&Ms, you would be very disappointed!
YOGA SKELETON! That would be the only skeleton I’d ever get (if I did anything about Halloween decoration).
Smarties and candy corn were always the last to be eaten in my trick-or-treat bag. Actually, I never did eat the candy corn. That stuff sets my teeth on edge. My faves were always Hershey Special Dark minis, peanut butter cups, Three Musketeers, and Mallow Cups. I am not a fan of caramel.
We don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters, either. In fact, we haven’t even participated in many years. I make up a special assortment of candy for my little boy neighbours, but that’s about it.
All these candies I had forgotten about! I used to love Three Musketeers. Actually, I ate any candy, but the candy corn was definitely last to be eaten.
I don’t really decorate for Halloween (it’s such a short season and I don’t want to store all the stuff) but I love all the little trinkets in your house 🙂 and the cat pillow!
My favorite candy is probably Twix. I always buy the mini versions (in case we have leftovers).
Yep, Twix is a good one. You definitely need some leftovers this Halloween (it’s good running fuel… right???)
I loved Snickers and Reese’s when I was a kid and still always buy an extra bag of Reese’s just in case 😉 I haven’t decorated for Halloween in the past couple of years – we don’t have many little kids in our neighborhood any more and trick-or-treaters were scarce last year.
Yes, an extra bag of Reese’s just in case (wink wink) is always a good idea! I miss the days when we got a lot of trick or treaters, but times have changed.
I’m a big fan of Mounds and have been since I was a child. AND I would choose candy corn over a Reeces peanut butter cup – I can’t stand peanut butter and chocolate together.
WHAT. Peanut butter and chocolate is the best combination! But, my daughter would agree with you. I used to love Mounds and Almond Joy- coconut, yum.
I’ve always loved Snickers, and everything that mixes chocolate with toffee (and nuts). Now I think everything is too sweet because I barely eat any sweets or sugary stuff at all anymore, but I like dark chocolate.
How fun with all the Halloween decor! I (of course) LOVE the cat cushion!
We’re very lucky that we live by a busy road so no kids will stop by here for trick-or-treating. Peace and quiet!
Smarties and candy corn? Wow she has some unique tastes!! I don’t care for either of those. I would eat smarties, I would never eat candy corn. Bleh!! My boys love chocolate. Paul’s favorite is a plain old Hershey’s bar; Taco’s favorite is probably PB cups but he also LOVES fruity things like skittles and starburst. Paul won’t eat anything fruit flavored.
