walkers walk… but runners fly

Fall Back Weekend!

Hooray!  We’ve gotten to a Very Important Weekend!  You might recall this post about Pumpkin Palooza, the little-known (because totally made up) festival of pumpkin that starts every year on September 1st.  There are some important events within that festival- the first day of fall, Halloween, and then of course Fall Back Weekend!

Saturday night we turn the clocks back, and I love how luxurious Sunday feels with that extra hour.  As an added bonus, Sunday is the New York City Marathon!  We can get up, go for a run, make the waffles (what? You are making waffles, aren’t you?) all in time to turn on the TV at 8:30 EST to watch the race.

Pumpkin waffles, of course!

That is, if you’re a runner.  My kids don’t run, and they truly can’t fathom how we could sit there and watch people run for over two hours.  I can see it from their point of view- a lot of times it’s not even much of a race, with one person pulling ahead early on and running by themselves to the finish line.

But I still love it!  I love watching the elite runners- it’s mind boggling how fast they’re running for 26.2 miles.  I love how beautiful their form is, and how easy they make it look.

Also… I ran the New York City Marathon in 1993 and 1996, when I lived in New York.  A long time ago… a lot has definitely changed, but it’s still the same race.  It’s fun to watch the runners go over the Verrazano bridge and think “I remember what that feels like!”

So what do you do with the extra hour on Sunday?  I know a lot of people do something very specific with that hour, like read or journal… or sleep.  I just appreciate that I can fit a lot into that morning, and not feel rushed.

Thanks as always for San, who is our intrepid host for NaBloPoMo! Check out her link for other bloggers who are participating this year.

Do you like turning the clocks back?

If you don’t live in the US, did you already turn the clocks back? – I think we do it too late here- mid-October would be nice!

  1. I didn’t know that you used to live in NY! I haven’t been there in a long time, but it’s one of my favorite places to visit. I’m cheering for Shalane. I’m using my extra hour to run a 10k tomorrow and I can’t wait.

    1. Ooh! Perfect use of that extra hour.
I’m also cheering for Shalane- I wish the TV coverage would show her. Shalane sightings were very poor fo the Chicago and Boston marathons!

  2. I love that extra hour you get in the fall. Here in Germany it is always the last weekend of October when we switch clocks. I don’t think I consciously plan on anything special to do with said hour. I am just happy the husband gets up earlier and it feels like we have more of the day. He is a night owl while I get up around 7 and fall asleep latest at midnight. He can easily stay awake until 4 am. As for marathons I only have a look at races during the Olympics. But I could watch for two hours. But I guess if you are doing the sports yourself it is totally different. We went to a big track and fiel meet here in Berlin a couple summers ago and loved it a lot while a lot of people asked if we weren’t bored.

    1. Wow, your husband really is a night owl!!! He must sleep pretty late in the morning. Yes, that extra hour is so nice. It’s one of my favorite days of the year.

  3. I definitely sleep that extra hour (LOL)… but yeah, I don’t mind the “fall back” weekend so much, it’s the “spring forward” that I am not so fond of.
I should definitely tune into the NYC Marathon tomorrow, although it’ll be REALLY early here on the West Coast, so I might just catch the end before I get my own workout it. I definitely understand though that it’s mostly people who run themselves, who will watch – and appreciate – a marathon!

Thanks again for participating in NaBloPoMo this year – you’re doing great so far! Keep it up 🙂

    1. Thank you San! I’m enjoying it.
Yes, the marathon is super early for the west coast. As you said you’ll probably wake up in time to see the end of it. Or maybe you’ll still be luxuriating in bed! Either way it sounds like a relaxing morning.

  4. In Italy we turned back the clock last week end: I love the extra hour.
N.Y.C. marathon is very popular here and many Italian runners participated in it, I have read that this year there are problems with the visas because of the covid restrictions.
I didn’t like to run a marathon abroad because I think that such race is tough and we need to follow our ordinary routine before the event. It means: sleeping in our bed, the day before eating the food we usually eat, knowing the route (just in case we have to stop) and running with the same weather.
For such reasons I ran my marathons in Italy (2 in Rome and 1 in Florence).

    1. Yes, there’s usually a large international field of runners for NYC. I agree that a marathon is hard enough- throw in the stress of travel and visa issues, and it might be too much. It did look like a beautiful day though! I hope everyone was able to enjoy it.

  5. I loved it when I ran the nyc marathon. An extra hour of sleep. But not now. Too dark after work. Limits places to run. Boo.

    1. Since I’m a morning runner I’ll take the light early in the morning! I can see how it wouldn’t work as well if you like to run after work.

  6. I love the extra light in the morning (there is something so depressing about starting the day in the dark, wrangling the kids for school). And I don’t mind the earlier evenings. We walk the kids to school each day, and then I tend to run just before lunch or mid-afternoon before the school bus arrives, so it’s always light. I’ve also enjoyed the darker evenings as I like to settle in at home and turn on lamps and light candles.

But the impact on sleep. Ugh. Even though my kids are old enough to handle an earlier wake-up independently, it has just really thrown everyone off their game this year. I really wish things just stayed steady all year…who do we talk to about this?

SHU suggested we make Halloween the last Saturday in October and I said I’d vote for a political candidate running on this promise (I’m mostly kidding…); if that same person would do away with DST, we’d have a winner!

I live in Canada and only some provinces do DST (and then within certain provinces, I think certain regions don’t observe DST). Weird, eh?!

    1. Elisabeth, I’m laughing because when my kids were little I was always ranting and raving about starting a petition to abolish daylight savings time. Fall is actually the easier one- turning the clocks ahead in the spring is impossible. BUT, now that my kids are older I don’t mind it. I definitely like the light in the mornings and like you, I don’t mind that it gets dark early.
