walkers walk… but runners fly

Fall Focus

This week’s Tuesday Topics prompt is: What’s your fall focus: fitness, family, fun, or something else?

Huh! I had to think about that one. I’m always focused on fitness and my family, but not any more so in the fall. I finally decided that my focus is just to thoroughly enjoy the season.

NOW!… for everyone who keeps saying “it’s too early for fall”, I say a) September 1st is the start of meteorological fall (so there!), and b) I hear you. When I lived up north I did not want to rush fall, and as a matter of fact didn’t enjoy fall at all, because I knew what was coming next. And I hated winter more than anything in the world.

But now here I am in South Florida, where we pretty much have two seasons: summer, and super-summer. I think I speak for all of us when I say we’re ready for super-summer to be over. Sadly, we have a couple more months of heat and humidity, but it can be fall inside my house.

Candles burning almost every day.
Soaps have been distributed throughout the house.

Today I’ll get out the bins with my fall decorations! Then there’s my pumpkin bowl (which I’ll use for my pumpkin oatmeal) and my Crazy Pumpkin Lady mug… and I’ll be watching plenty of football.

IN ADDITION, I’ve decided, for the first time ever, to have a Fall TBR. I went back and listened to some fall episodes of the Currently Reading podcast, and started this list:

–Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente

–Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (CAN YOU BELIEVE I’VE NEVER READ THIS???)

–Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (have read this, but a loooooong time ago)

Fellowship Point by Alice Elliot Dark (LOOK AT THIS COVER!):

Fall vibes…

Holy Island by LJ Ross (this one takes place right before Christmas but again, the cover is screaming fall):

Any other suggestions? I’m interested in anything dark, possibly (but not necessarily) creepy, or any stories that take place in fall or have a “fall” feel to them.

Day of Reading

As I’ve mentioned, I made my colonoscopy prep day into a “mini-reading retreat.” It worked out GREAT. I read everything

  1. I read the Holy Island when I first got a kindle paperwhite- I tore through the entire series in no time at all. It was a good one. I just finished a Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett- fantasy-mystery. At times dark but really good mystery!
I also read about ten Emma Latham books in three days. The main character is a banker, and each murder mystery has a different industry or financial setting. ( set from the 60s through the 90s.) Also quick paced and short- I’m very tired of storyline that meander too long for no reason.
Fall would be nice, but a heat dome just settled on top of my area for the week.
    Enjoy all things pumpkin spiced!

    1. I know- you’re having a heat wave. Not a good way to start meteorological fall!
I’ll look into Trade of Blood- it sounds good! And good to hear that you liked Holy Island. I’ve heard good things about it.

  2. love your fall goal!!! just to enjoy and eats all them pumpkins.
I don’t know any of the books on your list, I rarely read thrillers, where should I start Jenny?

    1. Let me read a couple of these and I’ll get back to you. Thrillers may not be for you? But the next time I read a great one, I’ll let you know.

  3. What??! How have you never read Anne of Green Gables? This is your big prio 1 in my opinion!!!
I love how you fully enjoy all the autumn things! I’ll be able to do that too this year, after the summer we had.
I don’t have any fall-themed books to recommend but I think you should read the Beach street bakery series by Jenny Colgan. They’re such inspiring feelgood books.

    1. Oh, I’ve heard of Jenny Colgan. And I know… what kind of reader am I, that I’ve never read the Anne books??? Not sure how that happened.

  4. I agree. My focus is mostly the sane all year except more hiking and racing in the fall and spring. And boating in the summer.

Too early here. Not enjoying the dark mornings and evenings.

    No decorations yet. Maybe soon.

I haven’t read any of those. Just finished Calamity club like everyone else.

  5. September 1 is the day I bring out my fall-themed tea towels, so I agree! September is definitely a fall month even though it’s technically summer. It feels very fall-ish in the mornings now – a little cooler for our morning walks, but afternoons warm and sunny. What a great month! And the pumpkins and other gourds are flooding the farm market right now, and I’ve noticed a couple of trees starting to turn. Time for cute boots and scarves! I am not a fan of eating pumpkin things, it’s just not my flavour profile, but I do like seeing them everywhere.

  6. We had an early taste of fall yesterday — the high temp was only in the 80s which is unheard of for any time between May and October usually! It was kind of a rainy day too so it felt cozy, and we’re supposed to have temps in the low 90s and more rain chances this week so I’m happy about that. Of course, we probably aren’t done with the 100s just yet but it feels like a nice intro to fall!

I’m excited for all the fall flavored things too but I guess I will have to go to Sprouts for that since Trader Joe’s didn’t have anything yet when I went on Sunday.

    1. Yes, Sprouts gets their things out early!
We’ve been having thunderstorms, and it definitely feels cozy. I guess we have to take any kind of “fall” we can get.

  7. I’ve read Anne of Green Gables (perfection!) and Rebecca (felt a bit more meh about that one but it does have the best opening sentence).

Well as a northerner, you know how I feel about fall. I love the season but I’m not ready to welcome it just yet as I want to hold onto summer as long as I can. I AM ready for my kids to be back in school, though. This summer felt eleventy hundred weeks long and we had full time childcare! I’m ready for a return to routines even if that means the start of activities and a very full calendar. I don’t like how late Labor Day is this year. I think Angie will be back in school for like a month by the time my kids start next week!

    1. I think you’re right- this is our fourth week of school. Yes, I’ll bet you’re ready! And you should have some beautiful fall weather before the *NEXT SEASON^ sets in.

  8. Fall is going to be about survival at our house this year. My husband’s schedule is unreasonable and I’m teaching three classes and trying to do the rest of my job. I imagine by mid-October I’m going to be a shell of myself. I’m already finding SAD symptoms arriving, so I need to figure out how to combat all that. *sigh* I wish I could move my town somewhere with a bit more sunlight year round.

    1. I wish we could give you some of our sunlight. And, SAD is the reason I moved to Florida. Now that we’re thinking of moving (at some point, not right now) I’m wondering how well SAD lamps work. At some point you’ll have to tell me all about it.
Oof… good luck this fall. Is mid-Obtober a point where it eases up?

  9. OOHHH the fall book list looks enticing! Last year I leaned into dark academia in the fall . . . your picks look awesome! I will try to incorporate at least one of them! From my perspective it isn’t going to feel any more fall like here by 9/21 so agree might as well start now!

    1. Yes, September 1st, September 21st… it’s going to be sweltering either way. We might as well have some fall fun right now. I’ll let you know how these books are!

  10. I have never read Anne of Green Gables either! How cool that you are going to tackle it! One of these days, I’m going to read it to my kid. I hope.

Your fall TBR looks fun! I always love reading about other people’s seasonal reading projects, but they never work for me for a variety of dumb reasons. However, I have been on a horror kick, so perhaps I will continue with that and pretend it’s seasonal!

    1. Horror is definitely seasonal for fall! And I’m glad to find someone else who hasn’t read Anne. I was afraid I would be ostracized from the community.

  11. I also have never read any Anne books. I think I’m okay with that.

Even though I love summer–probably a holdover from my years of teaching as well as It’s Fresh Pesto Season!–I am looking forward to fall. I’m tired of the heat and humidity. I wouldn’t last a day in Florida, I’m sure.

People around here have had autumn decor out since the first week of August, and many houses have huge Halloween decorations out already. TOO. SOON. I, however, have been adding pie spices to my ground coffee for about a week, so I guess I don’t have the right to judge.

    1. Nance, I’m not sure I’m going to last another day in Florida. But I say that every day and somehow I continue on.
I think anyone who has ever been a teacher will always love summer. But! It must be sweet to have fall arrive and not be back in school.

  12. I read Anne of Green Gables so many times when I was young! I keep thinking I need to revisit it. Have you ever read I Capture the Castle? Another cozy classic. Fall is my favorite season! But you know what comes next for us…

    1. I have read I Capture the Castle, and really liked it. I’m really not sure how I missed the Anne books when I was a kid. I definitely need to correct that glaring omission.

  13. It’s been decades since I read Anne of Green Gables but I loved it so, so much. I’m a little worried and hope you enjoy it. I don’t remember there being any murders or anything, and it’s kind of a YA book, I hope you love it!

We’re getting earlier evenings here, which I love. I don’t want December, 5pm winter vibes, but I do love September. We’ll probably have a few more heat waves before Autumn really hits (It was high 90s here last week) but for the moment I’m loving the cooler vibes.

    1. Don’t worry- I know it’s YA and that there are no murders. I’m up for it! I have a feeling I’ll like it, and I’m just not sure how I missed it as a kid.

  14. I am putting the scarecrow wreath on my door right this very morning! I am leaning into fitness this fall, including more intentional eating. We’ll see how it goes becuse I do love cozy food season LOL

  15. I cannot believe you’ve never read Anne of Green Gables. You are in for a treat, Jenny! I hope you love it. (I will admit I don’t love all the books in the series to the same level and the first few are my FAV; I’ve read them many times.)

My kids go back to school tomorrow and I am so ready. More than ready, actually!

I love September, through to the middle of October. As much as I dislike being cold, I love cool weather. Bring on the sweaters!

    1. I know- I can’t believe I’ve never read it either. I’m excited.
Yay for the first day of school! I hope you have something lovely planned for yourself.

  16. I just grabbed two books. One is by Stephen King (Never Flinch) and the other is by Phillippa Gregory … The Boleyn Traitor. I love her historical fiction.

And September 1 is not too early. I’m absolutely enmeshed in decorating!

  17. I mean, I am looking FORWARD to fall, but for me it doesn’t really start before October! I am perfectly fine enjoying a bit more of the late summer 🙂
Oh, and i don’t think I have a fall focus other than enjoying every season 🙂

  18. I do not have any book recommendations for you. I have been meaning to tell you that I also eat the same protein bars. I love them, but I buy the variety box from Costco and the pumpkin ones are not in that box. I don’t care for the almond ones, but Coach eats that flavor so I don’t have to. He’s quite the catch. It’s like super summer up here right now. What is even happening? We’re breaking heat records for Sept. It’s crazy.

  19. Ooh, Rebecca! Let me know if you want to do a buddy read for that one. That’s been on my reading list for a while, and I’ve always wanted to read it in October!

Anne of Green Gables is my all-time favorite book, so I *do* hope you love it, but it’s okay if you don’t. It’s not for everyone, but it means something special to me.

I’m getting out the fall decorations tomorrow! And I’m eager to finish up the non-fall candles I’ve been burning so I can start burning my fall candles again!

  20. I am sucker for those kind of book covers, too!! I admit I have fallen prey to gorgeous covers but the books were hit-or-miss. My most recent read had a picture of an Italian villa (and we just came back from Italy) so naturally I got it from the library. It did not disappoint.
