walkers walk… but runners fly

Gearing Up for Fall

What???.., (you might be saying)… It’s too early for fall! Nope- school starts MONDAY (August 10th) and our first high school football game is the 14th. So, like it or not, “fall” is upon us.

Last week I was suffering from post-wedding depression, but, not surprisingly, thinking about fall has cheered me up! I have mixed feelings about school starting (which we’ll get to in another post) but it’s time to pull myself together and plan my fall workout schedule. As usual, it’s like fitting together pieces of a puzzle. Scheduling lower body strength workouts that don’t affect my long runs and getting to the gym when it’s not horribly crowded can be tricky… but I’ve come up with a hopeful weekly schedule that includes four runs, two walks, two upper body strength sessions and two lower body strength sessions. Is this too ambitious? Time will tell (the upper body strength sessions can be done at home, so that helps).

Guess who else thinks it’s time for fall? The stores! I’m getting emails from Hollister telling me it’s time to shop for homecoming dresses, from Hallmark advertising football merchandise, and, best of all, Bath and Bodyworks had a sale this weekend on candles, INCLUDING FALL SCENTS!!!

You better believe I rushed to the mall. Imagine my delight at seeing this display:

I had a lovely time, leisurely sniffing every candle. Some of them smell amazing, and some are really strange.

Remember Football Season? I still can’t explain what it smells like, but the closest thing I could think of was “soap.” And Leaves smells like cinnamon. I mean… I just think some of these are misnamed. And Cozy Sunday Night smells like socks.

No.

But! There were lots of good ones, and I ended up buying this:

I came home and lit it right away. I love it! It definitely has a apple-y smell, which reminds me of Erica’s candle schedule (from The Girl Next Door podcast): apple- pumpkin- pine. She starts with apple in September (or, August if you start fall then) and moves on to the other scents as the months go by.

What’s your favorite season for scented candles? (If you answer anything other than “fall” we might have an argument!)

Do you have to reorganize your schedule for the new season?

Looking Forward To…

It’s my “weekend!” (As a reminder- I don’t work Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Here’s what I’m looking forward to… A trail

Life

Time seems to be going very slowly, and that’s a good thing! We’re just finishing the second week of school.

  1. Whoa, whoa, whoa, my friend! I’m over here, just enjoying summer! As much as I love fall, I know what comes after. Lol.

In answer to your question, no, my schedule doesn’t change. Maybe when that grandbaby comes, tho! Stay tuned.

    1. I know Wendy- when I lived up north, I was not anxious for fall! But here in Florida, winter is our best weather season, so we like to rush things along!

  2. The start of the school year is the start of fall! Regardless of what the calendar says.

My schedule won’t change, but the kinds of activities that I do will as the weather gets cooler. Less hiding out in side with the AC and more hiking! I can’t wait.

  3. okay this cracks me up bc you and i both know we literally have ZERO fall weather here. it might get a little crisp . . in late December. It’s the weather season that evokes the most anger/disappointment here for me! that said, i MAY be ready to convert my Sbux banana bread order to pumpkin bread!

every September we go buy every pumpkin flavored item at Trader Joe’s and have Pumpkin Lunch (made up of totally random pumpkin things). I can’t wait!!

    1. I think that’s one reason why I feel like it’s fine to start “fall” early- it doesn’t correspond to the weather no matter when we start- September and October are still hot. “Fall” in Florida is completely arbitrary.

  4. It is WILD to me that school starts so early! Not that I have kids in school anymore, but usually the start is around Labour Day. August is a summer month! But I know you love fall so I’m happy for you and your pumpkin spices, etc. I don’t burn candles because I am paranoid about fire, and my schedule will not change much with the fall! But I will enjoy all the prettiness that comes with it.

    1. My husband is also paranoid about fire, so we have very specific rules about candles- they can only go on a high shelf, and someone has to be around while they’re burning. I think he would be happy with no candles at all, but he does appreciate the smell.

  5. I do love the fall scents at Bath and Body Works! But even though school starts here this week, it’s not gonna feel like fall until November maybe. I know you get it living in FL! So we still have several more months of summer weather to get through.

    1. I guess the way I feel is- we don’t really get fall weather here, so why not start the season whenever? It’s not like it will be cool in September or October (or November, probably) and we won’t have changing leaves. Depending on what kind of winter we have, even the winter months could feel like summer. So… I say we just make it up as we go along. School and football say “fall” to me!

  6. Nope. Kids are grown. Yay.

Good luck with your schedule. I run for 4 runs and 3 gym days. A few walks. But work and weather often get in the way.

    No. Fall starts in September!!

    1. I’m wondering how I’ll feel next year when my daughter will be in college. Will I still feel fall vibes when the schools start??? It’s going to be strange.

  7. No no no. None of this fall talk! We haven’t even been on our annual summer vacation! But I know summer is something to just get through in FL whereas in Minnesota we are soaking up every sweaty minute. School doesn’t start for over a month so we are firmly in summer mode and I am here for it!

One of the good things about having year-round full-time childcare is that there is literally no change to our routines throughout the entire year. But this is what I prefer. I do not wish to be home in the summer with my children. I love them, but I get worn our filling 2 weekend days so I’m happy to send them to camps/childcare M-F. I do look forward to them returning to school so they are back to focusing on curriculums. I think I’ve mentioned that we’ve been making Paul finish some pages from his 2nd grade math book and good Lord it has been a battle many nights!

I wish I had candles in the house but Phil is very sensitive to scents so we do not own any candles.

    1. Oh, Phil would not like my house! Honestly, a lot of times we’re burning candles to cover up musty pet odors, and we needed them especially this past week with all the house fiascos.
When I lived up north, if someone mentioned fall in early August I would have been deeply angered. So I get it! But that’s when we started school after Labor Day, so August was still very much summer vacation. Now, if you’re telling me school strts August 10th, I’m going to call it fall!

  8. I LOVE the smell of candles, but it does set off my allergies. My husband loves candles, but I have to be careful how much I use them. I SO want to be a candle person all the time, but can’t be. Silly sensitivities.

I love fall. With all of my heart and then some. I love the smells. I love the weather. I love the length of the days. I love the structure of school. I love the leaves and the crisp morning air. Fall cannot come fast enough for me.

I’m trying to lean into and enjoy the summer still left ahead of me. And I AM, but I’m definitely anxious for fall to hurry up and get here.

My kids will be back to school this time next month which feels soon and forever away and I have a few mixed emotions, but I’m mostly excited!

And I love Erica’s progression! Apple to pumpkin to pine is the perfect order.

  9. I dislike everything about this post, Jenny. August is still FIRMLY SUMMER. I don’t want your apple/pumpkin/sock scents. Let me have my warm months. LET ME HAVE THEM.

  10. I love the coziness of fall season. unfortunately I haven’t had a fall for over 8 years.. the closest would be now, cool/winter month of brasilia.
I am impressed by your workout plan! are you following any plan/YouTube for the strength parts?

  11. I tried to comment a few days ago on another post, but it didn’t like me, so jumping on here to say CONGRATS to your son and daughter in law on their wedding, so glad it was a wonderful wedding. I enjoyed reading the recaps 🙂
Hmm, when I think about Football Season, soap is NOT the scent I would think about haha. But the apple cinnamon one sounds great! My favourite season for candles would be winter, our climate is similar to yours, so even winter is mild, but it is cool and dark at night, which is suited to candles. Our autumn is still quite warm and bright, to be honest, so not sure I can quite get into the candle mood at that stage. But I like your enthusiasm 🙂

  12. As soon as we get back from moving A into his new place, I’m hitting up spooky season. Big time.

We are (fingers crossed) having someone to come in to quote the kitchen and if everything works out, we’ll have a brand new look by Thanksgiving. We’ve been going back and forth about this forever, but I really hope it’s time.

And we have two football games on the schedule (UCF and UM) so that will be exciting! Hot, but exciting.

You know I have 8000 feelings about school starting over here. We will have to share those!

  13. School starts Monday for our county, too. I was very sad for my teacher friend who had to go back to work this week to prep for next week. It must be so nice having so much free time in the summer… and then it all hits you when August returns. Blah.

I have a few fall candles in my B&BW cart but I really like going into the store to sniff all the candles. It’s amazing how some candles that you think will smell amazing really do NOT. But I also need to take inventory of my fall scents and see if I *really* need to buy more, lol.
