walkers walk… but runners fly

Looking Back/Looking Ahead (And, SHU!)

Let’s take a look back at February (SINCE IT’S ALMOST OVER, WHAT???) It feels like a month where not a lot happened. Or, it feels kind of like a month where things happened to me, but not one where I made things happen. For example…

The Olympics were an exciting part of the month- except that I was a very passive observer this time around. Every night I would turn on NBC and enjoy whatever they were showing, but I didn’t plan any watching or do any deep dives into the athletes. I didn’t  plan any special meals around the games, and I didn’t even remember to wear my Olympics tank top once! Oops.

We didn’t have any trips or special events, other than Foxy’s birthday (but- I think if I’m holding up my cat’s birthday as a Big Event of the month, well then there’s something wrong with my life). There are two things I can point to as highlights of the month- my long run of 26.2 miles, and then two weeks later my 50K run. Those will have to count as my “little adventures” of the month (one of my goals for the year) because I don’t have anything else.

HOWEVER. March is looking VERY exciting and eventful. Let’s start with the big, obvious event- on Mach 21st I turn SIXTY (egads) and it’s the day of my big goal race, where I plan to run 60 miles. That’s obviously the focal point of the month.

My husband and I also celebrate our wedding anniversary on March 4th, and my daughter has an action-packed month. The band has MPA (what we used to just call “contest”), where they are adjudicated on the music they’ve been preparing for months. She also has her spring break, AND the band is going on a trip to New Orleans! I definitely include her events as part of my month, because they affect my schedule tremendously.

THEN, at the end of the month Paul and Isabel- my son and his fiancee- are coming to stay for a week!!! This is a big deal, as it will be the first time Isabel will be here. It will only be the second time my husband has met her (he just met her briefly at graduation in May) and the first time my daughter is meeting her. I know! It’s crazy that we know her so little, and they’re getting married this summer. So, this will be an important visit for all of us.

On the subject of planning… I saw SHU!  I went to a talk she gave at a local library.

She presented ideas from her book and led a mini-planning session. It was fun to see her in action. The participants ranged from young women barely out of college, to a woman with a three-month-old baby, to several older women. She managed to engage everyone and keep us all on track- which is hard when you have group participation activities. It also gave me a chance to re-think some of my goals, and add some goals in a new category, Family.

Was February an eventful month for you? Do you have anything big coming up in March?

April Runfessions!

The first thing I should runfess is that I seem to have forgotten what month it is. When I went to write

You guys, I can’t shake off this feeling of… ennui? Listlessness? Those words seem too strong. It’s not like I’m

It’s Earth Week!

Hi there! Once again it’s time for Tuesday Topics, and this week’s prompt is: It’s Earth Week. How do you stay

  1. Those two runs are more than enough! You had to prep for them and then recover! And cats rule, so Foxy’s birthday was a major milestone. You were also socializing little miss Sylvie- kitten enrichment very important!
Oh , goodness, nothing much happened in February, and I know I’m boring. Next month, I have spring break, but it doesn’t coincide with my kids’ or my husband’s. (Downside of working in academia- vacations are rigid! ) Lots of doctor appointments and spring cleaning plans.

    1. Well, you just re-framed my February to make it sounds exciting, so maybe yours was more eventful than you’re thinking. I also have some big cleaning plans for next month!

    1. Yes, March should be fun! And, this is the THIRD time I’ve seen SHU in person- we actually live pretty close to each other so we could be seeing each other more often (and maybe we WILL…)

  2. Hi Jenny! I’ve been MIA from the blood-land and really need to catch up. Thank you for the reminder to reflect on February and plan March. We have had a very snowy winter here in New Jersey. We are just coming off two full snow days… I’m kind of over the snow at this moment…
A highlight for February was my husband’s birthday, and a high light for March… maybe the fact that March is considered spring? Oh, St Patrick’s day! We did not manage to capture a leprechaun last year but maybe this year we will be more lucky 😉

    1. Ha, I forgot all about St. Patrick’s Day- I’ll probably continue to forget about it until it’s over.
i would be looking forward to spring too if I were you!!!

  3. Well, February NEEDED to be a slow month because March is action packed! Although only an ultra runner would describe a month with a 26.2 and an ultra as “slow”.

I am going to need to hear about every last detail about your daughter’s trip to Nola, and how exciting that you get Paul and New Daughter for a week! That’s going to be so much fun.

    1. Even though the trip to NOLA is jam-packed with interesting sightseeing and tours, I’m pretty sure the only things I’ll hear about will be gossip and “scandals” among the kids. SIGH! I know there’s a ghost tour- hopefully that will capture my daughter’s interest.

  4. So many exciting things, Jenny! A big birthday and an even bigger race! Time with your future DIL!! Eek.
And I’m so excited that you got to hang out with SHU (and definitely a smidge jealous).

    1. I know- I got a planning session with SHU in person!!! And yes… March is going to be exciting for me, and also for you! You definitely have a major adventure coming up.

  5. SHU!!! How fun! That sounds like a great talk, I am not surprised that she’s an engaging presenter. I listen to her podcast and it’s always great!
OMG how exciting to have Paul and Isabel for a whole week! Eeee! This is a BIG DEAL for sure! Your new DIL to be! Oh, what an exciting time of life. Plus you’ll enjoy having them for a whole week, what a treat.
March is a month of celebration for us too – actually it’s all centered on one day. Our anniversary (24!), my older son’s birthday, and Rex’s birthday are all on the same day. And also, the day before (which is probably when we would be celebrating) my dear friend from Calgary is visiting with part of her family on the way to the coast. I’m sure we can squeeze something else in on that day. ANYONE WANT TO CELEBRATE ANYTHING? Anyway, that’s very exciting on all fronts for me.
Highlight for February was my trip for sure, even if it did take me a while to recover!

    1. March 24th is quite a day for you! Maybe you can celebrate Rex’s birthday a day early (I’m thinking cake, balloons, presents… you know, the usual).
Yes, I wasn’t surprised that SHU was very good at what she does!

  6. When I got my new tracking journal this year, there was a page that had four or five lines to write about the most memorable parts of each month. As the end of January was approaching, I was so sad that I couldn’t think of anything to put there! So I forced my husband to go do something on the 31st. LOL. I think two big runs and Foxy’s birthday are AWESOME memorable events.

  7. March sounds AMAZING for you!! I had a super action packed Feb (some good, some less fun!) and am excited about March mostly being more ‘normal’ (though with some fun stuff too 🙂 ). But your March sounds totally epic. I’m excited for you. I will send you dates for a coffee date but now i think I need to avoid March on your behalf!!

  8. So cool you got to go to SHU’s presentation!! And so crazy about the wedding coming up so soon and that you guys barely know her! Oh well, I guess you have a whole lifetime ahead to get to know her better!! 😉 It will be exciting for you to all have that time together soon!

  9. March is going to be a VERY exciting month for you! I can’t wait to hear all about your big race!

February hasn’t been an eventful month for me, but I’m currently in Sedona doing some recon for my 125 mile race in May. I have a 4 day weekend this week which is nice so I thought I’d take advantage since I have to save my vacation days for my race and my sister’s wedding in June (I don’t get new days until July). I love Sedona so much so I’m enjoying it, though my “run” today was super tough and made me kinda scared for the race!

  10. Those runs were an event!!!

    March is pretty exciting.
NYC trip for a half and a trip to Asheville for another half and back to NYC for work. 3 trips in one month!! 4 hotel nights.
My stepson’s wedding anniversary (maybe they will go out and I can babysit?)

    More daylight after March 8!!

  11. Wow, what a month March will be! I hope Paul and Isabel’s visit is wonderful! It’s a good time to visit as it likely won’t be reliably nice in Chicago yet in late March. It will be a really nice to have a week to really get to know her!

February was a total blur. I am not sad that it’s almost over, though. That means we are one month closer to better weather (I know the reverse is true for you…). I’m ready for winter to be done even though it hasn’t been too bad overall. March is going to be busy’ish for us, too. Paul’s party is tomorrow and his birthday is Sunday. I get a 2 week break from travel and then travel back-to-back weeks. I get back from my 2nd trip on a Wednesday and fly to DC with Paul that Friday. But we’ll end the month on a high note with that fun visit to my sister!

  12. Celebrating Foxy’s birthday is *totally* a big event! 😀 I may or may not be debating how to mark the chickens’ birthday(s) in April …

What an exciting March you have coming up! 😀 I think my big March eventing will be more garden work, LOL! 😂 We are about to get very busy in the garden/flower scheme of things, so I am preparing myself accordingly.
