walkers walk… but runners fly

October Runfessions!

Hello!  It’s the last Friday of the month, so I’m linking with the inimitable Marcia for Runfessions!  I’ve got a few this month… let’s get started.

My first runfession involves LMNT.  I’ve written about this electrolyte replacement drink a few times here.  The first time I tried it, I hated it- it actually made me nauseous.  I decided to stick with my Nuun.  But then my husband bought a box of the salted watermelon flavor, so I tried it again.  This time I had the “ingenious” idea of only using half the packet.  That worked much better, and I let everyone know that I had invented a new way to drink LMNT.  For my longer runs, I would use half a packet in my usual 16 oz glass of water before the run, and the other half afterwards.  Good thing I’m so smart!  Then the other day I happened to see this, which came in the box:

Wait!  What???  You’re supposed to mix it with 32 ounces of water?  No wonder I hated it the first time- I was making it “salty AF.”  Ahem!  Next time, read the directions.

On to the second topic.  Overall I like living in Florida, but I “runfess” that this time of year is hard.  Everyone is talking about running in long sleeves and gloves, while we have this:

I don’t mind the heat so much in the summer.  I mean, what can you expect?  But 90s, when it’s almost November, is getting old. Our first big cool down seems to come later and later every year.  I know we’ll get there eventually, but right now every run is still a sweatfest.

Next up.  In case you’ve missed it, I’m currently being treated for the bonus double injury of insertional peroneal tendinitis and plantar fasciitis.  A couple days ago my husband suddenly experienced a stabbing pain in his peroneal tendon, which is on the outside of the leg, running under the ankle and down to the bottom of the foot.  What??? Is it contagious?  He’s never had this problem before, but it continued on and off throughout the day.

By nighttime it hurt enough that he decided not to run the next day.  He’s never done a pool run before, but decided to try it.  I lent him my flotation belt and gave him all the advice I could (since I unfortunately have a LOT of experience with this form of cross training.)  My doctor said I can run shorter distances while I’m getting my treatments, so I left him to the pool and headed off for my run.

My runfession here is that, while I felt really bad for my husband- I don’t want anyone to be injured, ever- I was so, so, SO relieved that it was him in the pool and not me.

Running on dry land… yes.

Would you trade your weather for 90s right now, if you knew it would be beautiful and 70s in February?

Anyone else like LMNT?  Make sure you mix it with enough water, ha ha…

  1. YES, I would GLADLY trade you my mid-40F temps (with rain and 18mph wind) for that lovely 90F slice of paradise you’re experiencing 😉 Your winter comes later and later, while mine seems to come earlier and earlier. That’s hilarious about mixing your drink too strong (SaltyAF, LOL). I hope the hubby’s discomfort is short-lived…

  2. At one point we truly thought we would retire in TX (we lived there 17 years). For a variety of reasons that didn’t happen, and I’m actually glad. The Winters are (mostly) to die for, but the summers — also to die for, in a very different way. And yes, they last as long as our winters do! Then there was the mosquitoes, the fire ants, the explosion of people moving to Austin . . .

I think it’s totally human to be glad that it’s not you in the pool. Hopefully your husband feels better soon, too!

  3. Nah, I’m good, lol! I like warm weather, but not the 90s! Plus our fall weather has been quite temperate this year. It’s still in the 50s. I can’t complain!

So sorry about your hubs. You know I’m a fan of the pool running. The app really helps!

    1. He hated the pool run! But I don’t think he did it right- you really have to do a workout if you’re going to do a pool run.

  4. Haha! I can almost FEEL your glee in that running pic! My answer to your question is sort of a trick one. I’d trade TODAY’s weather because it is raining torrentially here for the second time this week. I want my crisp fall back!

    1. Yes, I guess it was a trick question. If we could just pick and choose our weather day by day it would be perfect.

  5. My husband deals with constant running injuries and sometimes I do wish that I could “take one for the team” instead of him. But you’ve had more than your fair share so I’m good with his pool run. How did he like it? Did he totally hate it or was he glad that he had the option?

I have problems running in 60 degree weather let alone 90s so my dream is to find somewhere that has 40 degree mornings in summer, come back here for spring and fall, and then go to FL for the winter.

    1. Ha ha, he hated the pool run! I don’t think he really gave it a fair try.
So you need a house in Alaska, one in Florida and then your regular house for spring and fall- that’s not asking too much, ha ha.

  6. LOL on not mixing that powder correctly. That’s a huge difference in salt content! I hope your husband’s injury was fleeting. My husband is going to try KT tape for his knee, which bothers him on long bike rides. He proudly told me he ordered some from Amazon — but I have two boxes already!

    1. My husband is much, much more cautious (he would say “sensible”) than me and immediately took three days off running. I think his foot is better now- fingers crossed.

  7. well that probably explains why I did not like the lmnt either when I tried it. It was super salty! lol. I am sticking with my SIS. I would not trade my October weather for anything and wish I could bottle it up. 90’s are not my jam especially when the humidity comes along for the ride. Hope your hubs feels better soon but yes definitely better for him to be in the pool 🙂

    1. Oh yes- I should have mentioned it’s also super humid here! I think we’re getting a cooldown this weekend though.

  8. I do love hot weather. I hate layers in the winter. But I guess the change in seasons makes it interesting but dos winter have to be so long. That’s why I go to Florida in Feb. Maybe we can plan a meet-up. It almost happened in Fort Lauderdale last year.

    1. Yes, I saw you’re going to be in Melbourne in February! A little far from me, but not too bad. Maybe I can get up there.

  9. You know how I feel about Summer running so I will gladly keep the 40 and 50 degree temps we have had here in CT this week!

That’s very interesting about LMNT requiring 32 ounces of water. Most mixes usually say 16 ounces of water so I would have done exactly what you did the first time you tested it!

    1. Yes, it did occur to me- why don’t they make the packets half that size? Don’t most people mix with 16 oz???

  10. Summer apart, I like a lot the weather in this part of Italy: I can run without any problem from October to middle June.
I don’t know LMNT but I drink electrolyte replacements after every workout.
    Keep on running!!!

  11. Ouch on the 90s at this time of year. You know I love my fall weather so the 50s here is feeling pretty good right about now.

Hope your husband is feeling better!

  12. Nope. I like visiting the 70s in February, but that’s too warm for daily life at that time of year. Please let it cool down in about three weeks. Pretty please? I’ll do runrise anyway because OCEAN! but, ugh don’t want to for heat

  13. I can’t even fathom 90 degrees right now, but this week we’ve been getting extra chilly and I’m not quite ready for low’s in the 30’s! I prefer running in the cold weather, but still!

I’ve never done pool running, but I’ve heard good things. Hopefully you and your husband recover soon.

And that’s so funny about your LMNT. I’m currently testing out a supplement and they say you can drink it in 12 oz or more….if I drank it in only 12 oz I’d totally gag, so I always use at least 24!

    1. Yes, I don’t know why they all go in different amounts of water- the lesson is to read the directions! Interesting that the range for yours is so big (12-24.) I’ll be interested to hear which one it is.
