walkers walk… but runners fly

Random Friday Things

I started a “Runfession” post yesterday, but my evening descended into chaos- my daughter and her boyfriend were at our house hanging out (which I love) and then one of her friends texted that she needed to come over because… her cat died. OMG. Yes- come right over!

It was so sad- her cat had a stroke and it sounds very similar to what happened to our cat Charlotte in December. This girl, by the way, is the whole reason why we now have Sylvie! She was the one who put us in contact with the woman who was looking for a home for the kitten.

Sylvie with her catnip pickle.

Anyway, after a session of tears, she cheered up slightly by holding and playing with all three of our cats. I made Christmas Crack, which everyone LOVES. I’ve made it many times since Christmas (we now call it different names, like Birthday Crack or Valentine’s Crack) and it seems to always come out well, even when I mess it up (the first time, I burned the toffee mixture and everyone still ate it). I make it with vegan butter and dark chocolate chips- it’s really simple, but watch that butter/brown sugar mixture! It’s easy to overcook it.

Cat therapy for the win.

By the time our friend left, we were talking about all the cats out there who need good homes… she’ll have room in her life for a new one (soon…)

Now we’re at the weekend! I have… no plans. But I’m not complaining! Tonight I’ll be the only one home, so I’ll get Chipotle and read my book (sigh- I wish there were Olympics to watch!) I’m reading and enjoying Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

Tomorrow I work, and at night we’ll talk to my son. He wants to discuss logistics of the upcoming year- lots to think about. And, this weekend will start The Cleanup, or, as I’m calling this project, Make the House Great Again.

The house has gone to rack and ruin- you know those nagging things that break and stay broken for a really long time until you just get used to them? We have those. Plus, a deep, deep cleaning is in order. If we start now, we MIGHT be done before Paul and Isabel come at the end of March (just to start with- his bedroom became the Kitten Room and has never quite recovered).

So that’s life right now! What does your weekend look like? Have you ever read Project Hail Mary?

April Runfessions!

The first thing I should runfess is that I seem to have forgotten what month it is. When I went to write

Blah

You guys, I can’t shake off this feeling of… ennui? Listlessness? Those words seem too strong. It’s not like I’m

It’s Earth Week!

Hi there! Once again it’s time for Tuesday Topics, and this week’s prompt is: It’s Earth Week. How do you stay

  1. I miss watching the Olympics!!

I bought my cat the pickle but he prefers the banana, carrot and other toys. lol

Still toying with getting a kitten… they are hard to find and then maybe two is enough. My cats are still young and healthy.

I have a 12 miler tomorrow and brunch and a lunch date on Sunday… plus errands, laundry, etc.

  2. I still have some Olympics coverage to watch since my parents recorded it for me to see, so when I’m back at their house tomorrow I can continue watching! Even though I know the outcomes of the events, I still wanna see it, you know?

I’m getting ready for my second Sedona recon run. I’m hoping it’s not quite as hard as yesterday’s but I really can’t complain when I get to be enjoying some amazing views in my favorite place!

    1. Oh, I’m envious- I’ll bet it beautiful! Why is it hard- is it steep? Rocky? Everything is so flat and blah here, it’s hard for me to envious.
I’m also envious you have more Olympics to watch! You have a fun weekend ahead of you.

      1. The trail was pretty rocky, but it was also on slick rock, which was tough to follow because I had to keep an eye out for white markings on the rock to see where the path went. Oh, and I also had to basically rock climb up a couple sections using my hands and knees which was an adventure!

  3. I’m having Olympics withdrawal! No plans for the weekend … more snow on the way so I forsee a lot of time curled up on the couch reading and I may need to find something new to binge watch.

    1. Actually your weekend sounds really fun! No snow here- I wish I had an excuse to curl up on the couch and read. Well, in all honesty I’ll probably do that anyway : )

  4. How sad about the kitty cat 🙁 I’m glad you all could be there for your daughter’s friend!
I did a lot of cleaning and organising last year due to the bedroom remodel but I have a ways to go. My workout room keeps getting tidied up and then… we remodel something and everything gets dumped in there “temporarily”. Ugh. I have a friend coming end of April, that could be a good deadline to get it sorted!
I have a few plans this weekend and I hope the weather is nice! Tomorrow I’m the Run Director for parkrun, but then the rest of day is free. Then Sunday I’m doing my new “One Organized Walk” a month (kind of replaces signing up for races; I sign up for walks – and obviously I walk daily but the one I sign up for is more special) in Baarle-Nassau which is a place I’ve wanted to visit SINCE I’VE LIVED HERE (32 years LOL). It’s a town in the Netherlands that actually has a section of it belonging to Belgium. Like the border even crosses through peoples homes! This will be walk 3 of 12 if I manage the whole year.

    1. Wait. People’s homes are straddling the border of the Netherlands and Belgium??? This must be a really interesting town. Have fun with the walk.
Having people coming to visit is a great motivator to get the house cleaned!

  5. Bahahahaha make the house great again. Doesn’t it seem like when one thing goes, everything goes? It’s like a snowball effect. Our old house in Calgary, it seemed like one thing would tip off the process.
Awww…that poor girl. It’s so sad when pets die.
Have a great weekend, Jenny! It sounds kind of nice, honestly. I love a night of just reading alone. That basically never happens anymore because of my husband’s retirement, but that’s such a nice cozy way to spend a Friday night. Glass of wine, good book, something yummy to eat – it doesn’t get better!

  6. I did like Project Hail Mary, though I thought The Martian was better—but is that just because I read it first? Who knows. I have no exciting plans this weekend, but hopefully will chip away at my own decluttering project. It’s a process!

  7. So nice that your cats were therapy cats for yor daughter’s friend! No one could be sad for long with Sylvie around.
Project Hail Mary is great. I skim over a little of the science at times, but the storyline just so good! Ending different than you might think but I loved it.
Nothing but chores this weekend here. Have fun!

  8. Aw, glad you were able to help comfort your daughter’s friend. Losing a pet is so hard.

Ugh. Our house could use a deep cleaning, but there’s always something else I’d rather do. 😉

  9. Year round Christmas Crack! I approve.

I’m so sorry for your friend and her loss. I’m getting ready to snuggle in with Doggo, and I’m sure you’ve got Sylvie extra close right now.

  10. Our three cats say hi to yours! 🙂 This weekend I will be doing hospital duty with my daughter. But, she is feeling pretty good despite having to be there for almost a week, so it isn’t as bad as it might seem. Hopefully her infection tests will come back negative and she will be able to go to the Child Life place. Right now, she is a contagious risk so she can’t leave her room. We haven’t had an overnight in the hospital in nine years, so this will be an adjustment. My husband did duty tonight and last night and will come back on Sunday night so I can work next week. We’re hoping everyone is home by Wednesday at the latest. Fingers crossed! I’ve been doing laundry and dishes and cleaning and trying to make sure we have food for next week, whatever it might look like.

  11. I’m glad you could provide some cat therapy! Losing a pet is so hard. Cat snuggles can help, though.

Good luck with the great clean up of 2026. And your night alone sounds lovely!! We have a busy weekend. This morning I am going to a HIIT class with 2 college friends and then grabbing coffee after. I need to make Paul’s cookie cake this afternoon for his birthday celebration tomorrow at my MIL’s. Then his party is at 4:30 today. It’s kind of a lot but we will make it work!!

  12. I am impressed with your deep cleaning plans. Our house could use a good spring clean, for sure. But every time I think about it, I get so overwhelmed… and then I go back to ignoring the issues. Probably what I need to do is tackle things piecemeal, like, clean out a drawer or a cupboard when I have a few minutes, rather than trying to visualize a full deep clean.

Your kitties are so cute! How kind of them to offer their therapeutic services to your daughter’s friend in her time of need. I can think of few things more comforting than a soft kitty.

  13. Sylvie is just the most precious little creature, Jenny. Gah!

I loved the Olympics and have missed watching them SO much.

I read and really enjoyed Project Hail Mary. I have The Martian on hold and plan to read that while away. I really enjoyed the movie.

  14. I want someone to come over and fix all of the things that we have gotten used to around here. I want them to do an amazing job, quickly and quietly, and I want it to be free. I suspect I can have all but the last of these. Well, at least I’m sure I could hire someone to fix things.

I’m sorry that your daughter’s friend’s cat died, and I’m glad that you all were able to cheer her up. We all know how difficult that loss is.

No big plans for today. Yesterday was a family birthday party, so busy but fun. Good food, good cake, good laughs.

  15. Listen, I hired someone off Task Rabbit to do a deep clean of my apartment when I moved out, and it was the BEST MONEY I have ever spent. It wasn’t even that expensive, and now I’m considering hiring her once a year to do a deep clean of my apartment to get in all the nooks and crannies I can never get to. Just an option once you’ve done the decluttering/organizing part.

I loved Project Hail Mary! Andy Weir can do no wrong in my eyes.

Your daughter’s poor friend. That’s so rough, and I’m glad she was able to have some cat therapy. When Dutch, my dog, died, I would go to those (REALLY TERRIBLE I KNOW) puppy stores just so I could hold and love on puppies. It was so healing!

  16. Oh, I’m so sorry about the sweet kitty. That’s awful.

We are getting our house powerwashed, sealed, and painted. Not fun, but necessary. I want to “decorate” the front porch and i also want a new rug. I’m keeping my eyes out.

I know what the new scheduling is but how exciting for your son and his fiancee!
