walkers walk… but runners fly

Three Great Podcasts

Happy Saturday, and Day 13 of NaBloPoMo!  Today I’m sharing some of my favorite podcasts. I love podcasts!  I listen to them in the car, and also while I’m running.  The amount of information and/or entertainment available to us- for free!- is incredible.  Here are three recent episodes that I’ve loved.

The Rich Roll podcast episode with Andrew Yang!  Andrew has his own podcast, Forward with Andrew Yang, but if you want a good introduction to his ideas, this interview with Rich Roll is excellent.  Andrew offers a glimmer of hope for American politics, and finding a way out of the mess we’re in.  I love him.

Go Andrew!

Training for Ultra is my current favorite running podcast.  At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about the host, Rob Steger. He has a quirky sense of humor that doesn’t always flow smoothly in his interviews- but he grew on me.  He talks to incredible ultra runners, and in this episode he interviews Helgi Olafson. Helgi has a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis, which causes inflammation of the spinal joints.  There’s no cure for AS, but there are various treatments.  On this episode Helgi talks about running a 240 mile race, while – in addition to his AS- he also had a small broken bone in his foot.  WHAT?!  I love listening to these podcasts while I’m running, because if I’m tempted to think I’m a little bit tired that day, I hear a story like Helgi’s and tell myself “Don’t be ridiculous!” while picking up the pace.

Eckhart Tolle: Essential Teachings are recordings of Eckhart talking to live audiences.  Initially I didn’t love that format, but it’s worth it to hear what he has to say.  This is more of a “car” podcast than a “running” podcast for me.

Every single episode is amazing.  Eckhart is amazing.  He wrote two books, The Power of Now and A New Earth.  I loved his books, but some people find them hard to read.  The podcast episodes may be more accessible.

What have you been listening to lately?

Oh boy- I read an intense book this week! Birchwood Pie recommended this, and I don’t know whether to thank her or demand an apology.

  1. I’ve been running to No Stupid Questions with Angela Duckworth and Stephen Dubner. Short, witty; not really self-help, but does induce lots of introspection.

My other favourite is Happier with Gretchen Rubin.

Our family enjoys: Stuff You Should Know (such a BROAD array of topics, but hilarious hosts) and Under the Influence (really interesting marketing stories)

    1. Yes! I also love Happier! As a matter of fact after I wrote that post I regretted not including it. Maybe I’ll have to do a part 2. I’ve heard Angela and Stephen interviewed on a different podcast, about their podcast (if that makes sense.) So many podcasts!

  2. Confession: I am not a podcast person. I try (again and again) and will occasionally listen to an episode here and there, but mostly, I don’t know when people fit it into their day. I don’t have a commute and I listen to music/coaching when I run, so there are not many other opportunities. When I am at home, relaxing, I’d rather pick up a book than listen to a podcast/audiobook. I have been enjoying “This American Life” (which is technically not a podcast, but a radio broadcast) and during the election last year, I listened to “Pod Save America” quite a bit.

Your podcasts sound interesting though and I agree, it’s incredible how much information and/or entertainment is available to us- for free!

    1. Yes, if I didn’t have a commute I would listen to way fewer podcasts. I listen a lot in the car. Like you, I don’t listen to podcasts when I’m home relaxing. I love listening to podcasts about running while I’m doing a long run!

  3. I’m always looking for great podcasts! I had to get over the length, but I really like the ClipOut podcast for all things Peloton-related. I used to FF through the MetPro segments until I realized the guy shares really practical, sensible nutrition tips.

  4. I love love love podcast and was thinking about writing a post about my current favorites. I have not hear or listened to any of the ones you mentioned here. I listen to a lot of creative business podcasts. And I also enjoy invisiabila – a science podcast about invisible things like fear, ghosts, phenomena and stuff like that. Rather long (1 hour) but so educational while entertaining

  5. I love podcasts, too! I listen to a really broad array, from political podcasts to educational podcasts to comedy podcasts. I try to do a roundup of my favorites every year on my blog, and it’s been interesting to see how my tastes have changed so much over the years!

    1. Yes, there are definitely podcasts I used to love that I never listen to anymore. But then sometimes I’ll remember them and go back to them. The amazing thing is there’s a podcast for pretty much every subject you could imagine.
