walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Accepting What I Cannot Change

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah. I had a good week- it was nice to get back to a normal schedule after my trip and then “jury duty” (I did nothing but call in every night to find out I wasn’t needed the next day- it still messed up my work schedule). I even came to a place of acceptance with the heat- my runs still feel like a steamy, hot slog, but I’m not ranting and raving against it anymore. Progress! Here’s how it all went down:

Sunday

4 mile run before work. I’ve been working a lot of Sundays lately to make up for hours I missed, and as I said- I’ll be glad to get back to a normal schedule.

Monday

Leg day at the gym! Hip thrusts, squats, glute press machine… the usual.

Tuesday

I planned to run on the treadmill at the gym after work, but had a last minute pivot. I decided to do an upper body strength workout and save the run for the next day. Since I’m not a body builder (ahem, obviously) I just focus on the big moves. Horizontal push (bench press), vertical push (overhead press with dumbbells), horizontal pull (rows) and vertical pull (lat pulldowns). Done!

Wednesday

5 mile run outside! This is why I postponed my run- I knew I wanted to run a little longer, and couldn’t face a treadmill run over 4 miles. I added some strides at the end of this run- boy, my legs really don’t want to go fast. Also it was hot AF, but I was glad to be out there.

Thursday

Core and hip stability exercises. I lump a bunch of things together under the category of “hip stability” including Runner’s Touch, one leg sit to stand, and side planks with leg lifts. I also added some regular planks for core work.

Friday

4 mile run. It was hot! I survived.

Saturday

Off. I didn’t actually plan to take the day off, but it just sort of happened. That’s okay!

Sunday

On tap- long run! By “long” I mean 7 miles. I haven’t gone that far since last April, and I’m looking forward to it. Then… WAFFLES! Now this is how a Sunday should be… I’m glad I don’t have to go to work!

How’s the summer heat where you are? Are you acclimated to it?

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary! I started the day with a long run… … and

  1. I’m definitely acclimated to the heat this year because when it cooled off to the upper 70s later this week, it felt cold. LOL! My husband laughed at me when I said that. We still can’t open the windows tho because of the smoke from the wildfires. It’s pretty thick.

    When does jury duty end?

    1. I’m all done with jury duty! I finished it last Friday, the 25th. Phew.
Ha- I would love some upper 70s! I can see how it would feel “cold” but I would welcome it.

  2. We got a nice break from the heat this week but then the air quality was pretty bad from the wildfire smoke from Canada. It cleared enough for me to go for my run of 7.5 miles yesterday, though. It was in the 60s so the run went much better than the previous week’s when it was super muggy. I increase to 8 next week.

I am glad you are having a more normal weekend with Sunday off from work!!

    1. Ooh, a run in the 60s! I’m envious! We’re about on the same long run schedule (I did 7 today) but mine was a horrible slog through the heat. Oh well- I guess I should be glad we’re not getting smoke from the fires.

  3. I hear you on only being able to run so many miles on the treadmill and good for you for taking it outside (as long as you felt safe).

We’ve had some hot and steamy weather here this summer, but fortunately I was in the western mountains for several of those weeks. We had a cod front come through on Thursday evening – this morning it was 57° when I got up. 🙂

    1. Gah, 57!!!!!!! That sounds like heaven. Honestly, that’s my dream running weather. We won’t see 50s until November (if we’re lucky).

  4. The heat and humidity has relentless this summer! I’m impressed you’ve kept up your miles outside. Yay for having a normal week of schedules looks like your body is feeling good this week

    1. I did feel good this week! And, I guess I got tired of running on the treadmill. I finally decided the heat was better than ther treadmill boredom, I guess.

  5. The weather is what it is, but it’s good to have options when it’s so gross outside.

Sounds like you got in some solid workouts!

  6. Big kudos for making peace with the heat instead of battling it – mentally, that shift does wonders. The minute I stop whining, somehow the heat just feels more bearable…at least, that’s what I tell myself! 😅

That 7-mile run followed by waffles sounds like absolute perfection. Enjoy every bite!

  7. Good for you to accept the heat! It’s like with me and wind/rain. Going with the flow and making the best of it is the way to go (although sometimes I do complain, of course). I think it’s impressive to run longer distances (5+ miles) in your temperatures! My husband will get a taste of it soon.
Those big moves are the most important ones! I consider myself a bodybuilder of sorts but I also for the most part do compound lifts, they do a lot and I’ve built some good muscle mass and strength with them.
As for our “summer heat”, it was sunny and warm so we took our coffee out in the garden, and immediately the wind picked up. So that’s that, haha!

    1. I agree Susanne- the big moves are the important ones. My daughter keeps nagging me to focus more on things like triceps (I wonder why, SIGH) but I’m just not interested. I don’t want to spend that much time in the gym, and I want to get the most out of the time where I’m there.
Yes, you’ll be getting some heat soon! Good luck to your runner husband.

  8. Nice! Consistency!

I particularly enjoyed Tuesday’s photo, because there are all those clunky gym bros and then there’s you looking all lean and fit :)!

    1. Ha ha… I like the description of the gym bros as “clunky.” I usually think of them as incredibly muscular and way stronger than me, but I’ll reframe it from now on.

  9. Don’t even talk about the heat haha! After a “mild” July (still hot but not quite as hot as usual), August came in and decided to crank up the oven. We are under an excessive heat warning through Friday and I had to get my 15 mile long run done yesterday! I didn’t go up to the mountains this time but I went up a little in elevation and that helped. It was 100 degrees by the time I finished but I felt pretty good, all things considered. Then I spent the rest of the day mostly on the couch in the A/C!

Enjoy your long run and waffles!

    1. ACK. Well- you’re well acclimated to the heat by now! It’s so, so hard though. And I know that feeling, after doing a long run in the heat- I don’t want to step foot outside again for the rest of the day.

  10. Great attitude with making peace with the heat. As you know, I have a very similar mindset in the winter. You are very disciplined with your hip mobility work…I really need to follow your example. I hope you enjoy your day off!

  11. So hot! Eeps! It’s been OK here this week thank goodness. I managed two four-mile runs so really pleased about that. Getting the miles up very slowly!

    1. Slow is the way to go! I get impatient when I’m coming back from a layoff, and just have to remind myself that I WILL get to where I want to be- it takes a while.

  12. I want waffles.

You know it’s similar here for me. Every day is just a long dragging, swampy, soggy, heat wave. I’m miserable!

Great job with getting in your miles and workouts. I’ve back burnered the gym again, sadly. It’s just not going well for me.

    1. Yep, we’re in the same boat. It sounds like the gym just isn’t working for you right now. No reason why you can’t get back to it later- it will still be there!

  13. Sounds like a good week Jenny with some solid strength in there, well done!

Hoping it cools off a little for you so you can enjoy the runs a bit more!

    1. It probably won’t cool off for several more months. But I can hope for overcast skies or rain- that would help!

  14. Yay! I hope your 7 miler and waffles goes well!! Sounds like a perfect Sunday to me! I’m so impressed with your ability to run outside in the heat and humidity! You rock. But i also hate the treadmill and will do anything i can to avoid it.

    1. I go back and forth- in the beginning of the summer I preferred the treadmill, but then I got tired of it. Right now the heat is the lesser of two evils, I guess.

  15. The summer heat was miserable for a long stretch. It resulted in some seriously nutso storms. Flash floods even. It’s been delightfully mild now for better part of a week. Lovely – no AC needed. I usually run (well, not NOW – stupid back issue) or walk before it gets too hot but even on the really hot days, it was already stupid hot by the time I got outside early in the morning.

I’d want an award if I ran 7 miles, or at least ice cream. 😉

    1. Ha, my award was waffles, which I made the night before- so all I had to do was heat them up while I took a nice, cool shower. I know you had a lot of heat this summer- I think you’re getting a break now. I’m sorry your back is still an issue!

  16. Mindset shift is so important! when we can’t run, all we want is to run no matter the weather, right? I ran through humidity and heat for 7 years, and now sometimes I complain when it’s slightly hotter than usual. hahaha… I need to remind myself to be grateful to just be able to run (nothing hurts).

    1. Yes, absolutely- any day you can run pain-free is a good day. I have to remind myself of that if I’m tempted to complain.

  17. It’s hot but not as oppressive as it was last week. The bigger issue is the lack of rain. Things are SO dry and I feel like the province (country? world?) is a giant tinder box. I don’t really enjoy rain in the summer, but it’s so needed right now!

  18. We are finally getting some normal summer temps. It’s lovely.

Air quality sucks but I guess you can’t have everything.
