walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Going Long

Well, this week felt long! Not in a bad way- I just have to keep reminding myself that all these things happened in the same week. We had an epic cold snap- I had an epic long run- and my daughter had several events and concerts. It was a lot, but all good. I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown. Here we go…

Monday

Okay seriously. This was our second morning in a row where the windchill was in the 20s. We’re just not set up for that kind of cold (this was the morning my windshield was iced over and I didn’t know what to do). In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and saved my run for later in the day.

I wore a tank top, but that was pushing it. Even in the warm sunshine, it was chilly. 4 happy miles though!

Tuesday

Third day in a row down to the 30s (once again- this NEVER HAPPENS!) Luckily I had no outdoor plans. I did my hip stability exercises, and an upper body strength workout.

Wednesday

Long run!!! It was 50 degrees when I started (which I used to think was “cold”, ha! Now I have a whole new perspective). I started in a jacket, but after a couple hours was down to a tank.

In Friday’s Coffee Date, I indulged in a little bragging that I ran a marathon. Yes I did- but a 26.2 mile training run on the trail is quite different from running a road marathon. I went slowly, and had several stops at the “aid station” (aka my car) to refill water bottles. I had a rough couple of miles around 23-24, but finished feeling pretty good. There were some sore muscles, but my calf- and all other body parts- held up just fine.

Thursday

I went to the gym before work and got on the bike. Nothing crazy, just some easy-moderate pedaling to flush out sore muscles.

Boring workout=boring photo.

I would have loved to do yoga, but right after work I had to drive my daughter to a jazz band concert. It was a fun event, but we didn’t get home until 10 pm. Oof, that was a long day.

Friday

First thing in the morning- YOGA, finally. I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back pain. My back really isn’t hurting much, but this is a great release for low back, hamstrings, and hip flexors.

Later in the afternoon I got out for a run. My legs weren’t that sore, so I was surprised to find that they were very heavy and tired once I started running. I kept it slow and short- 3 miles.

Saturday

Once again, I opted for a little more sleep and saved the workouts for later in the day. I did my hip stability exercises, and then, finally, got out for a 4 mile run. Everything felt back to normal, and as I finished the sun was setting and there was a chill in the air. I love it!

At night I watched…. the Olympics!!! I think I got in a core workout while watching the downhill skiing. I found myself clenching my abs and leaning from side to side as I watched them barrel down the mountain, ha ha. I always think I’m not going to be interested in the winter sports (compared to the summer) and I’m always wrong.

Sunday

On tap- sleeping in! Olympics! SUPER BOWL!!! And- a lower body strength workout. It’s hard to figure out where to fit it in when I do a long run in the middle of the week.

How was your week?

Do you prefer winter or summer Olympics? – I definitely have to go with summer (running! swimming! gymnastics!) but I enjoy the winter games as well.

Patriots or Seahawks?- I’m rooting for the Seahawks, but I don’t have a strong opinion either way.

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. amazing how fast you recovered from the 26.2 run! I haven’t hit high LR for a while, nursing my knees and recalibrating my fueling to start real training.
I’m definitely summer olympic fan, especially swimming and running.

    1. Yes, I absolutely love the swimming and running. I’m not interested in most of the winter sports, but once I start watching I get engrossed in it. So far everything has been fun to watch- not sure I’ll watch curling though.

  2. I don’t watch the olympics anymore, but figure skating and hockey were always fun. And I probably won’t watch the superbowl- I get bored with long commercial breaks and pauses in the play. I only really like my kids’ sports teams.
As I am not a runner, I find how you balance long and short runs with other types of exercise interesting. ( I assumed a runner would just run!)
The week was long and ended with a frustrating thing I’ll have to deal with in the next few days. Just as one other thing cleared up. I guess I can’t have a life without drama.
Have fun running this week- I hope it warms up to normal for v you!

    1. I’m sorry about your drama!!!
In a perfect world, I would just run. That’s what I did in my youth, but now that I’m older I would get injured if I just ran. That’s why I do all the other stuff- just trying to keep my body in one piece.

  3. Praying for warm weather in Florida.

And hope you can squeeze me in.

I actually Winter Olympics. Surprisingly because I hate cold weather.

Not cheering for either. But my stepson is a NE fan

Congrats on the long run or marathon.

    1. Thank you! I’m sure we can figure out a time to get together, and don’t worry- the weather will be warm for you. Good thing you didn’t come a week earlier!!!

  4. Nice job on that marathon training run! I’m sure the cooler weather helped make it tolerable. When is your race?

I’m not really cheering for either team, but I’m pretty sure the Seahawks will win–they’ve been unstoppable! And yes to the Olympics–I do enjoy the winter Olympics much more than the summer version. The downhill skiing is so exciting. Did you see Lindsey Vonn’s crash? Brutal.

    1. No I didn’t see that!!! I’m sure they’ll be replaying it though.
my race is March 21st. Yes, the cooler temps helped me SO MUCH on this run. It relly got hard towards the end when it got warmer. Well, it’ll be warm (hot) in March so I better get used to it.

  5. Nice work on a great week of workouts. And I am relieved you didn’t have any nagging pains! Yay!

I definitely prefer the summer Olympics but I love the winter ones, too, and will watch nearly anything! We are also cheering for the Seahawks. I am a little salty over the fact that Sam Darnold has played so well and hasn’t imploded like he did when he played for us. I’m excited to hear Brandi Carlile sing American the Beautiful before the game and for the halftime show!

  6. Yay for the cooler weather — I mean warmer weather? — and a good long run!
I find watching all the athletes I think about their core strength — especially the ice skaters yesterday, but also the skiers and snowboarders ….. I guess that’s why they call it “core”.

  7. Well done on the marathon long run! Breaks or not, you still got the miles in! I did a 30km run on Friday, and it was tough. It left me wondering how on earth I’m going to run a marathon in 2 months. But these long runs are so effective BECAUSE they are hard.

    1. Yes I have the feeling after every long run- if this was hard, how will I be able to run 60 miles in March? Actually, I’m still wondering that, lol. I think it’s going to take a lot of mental strength!

  8. Wow. Nice job training this week! Sounds like you are recovering well from your long run and moving right along. I used to be really into the Olympics but this year not so much. I sure was rooting for Lindsey Vonn though too bad.

    1. I kept forgetting about the Olympics when they were coming up- it seems like they’re not as hyped as the summer games. But now I’m into it! I didn’t see Lindsey’s crash. I have to go back and watch that.

  9. Oooh, that’s some cold temperatures for south Florida! You went out with a tank top in that??!
Nice long run with the marathon distance! You seem to be in good form!
I always prefer summer sports, but there are some amazing Swedish athletes right now so I enjoy following the winter Olympics if I can. But this time it’s hard because we don’t have a TV and I don’t find any decent place to see the Olympics streaming from Ireland. Ireland obviously doesn’t care much about winter sports and especially not while the Six Nations rugby is going on. I’ll follow it by reading the news mostly.

    1. Just to clarify, it was later in the day and much warmer when I was running in a tank top! LIke, 50s and 60s. The reason I didn’t run on those cold mornings is that I don’t have winter running gear.
Yes, I can see how Ireland doesn’t get really into the winter sports. But they must have some athletes participating? I’ll have to look that up.

  10. I think doing a marathon on your own is a lot harder than in a race setting! You have to figure out all the logistics around hydration and fueling and stopping back at your car can make it easy to just quit there.

I don’t have cable or Peacock so I can’t watch the Olympics, so sad! I’m hoping to watch some when I’m at my parents’ house next weekend, especially the Opening Ceremonies since I always enjoy that. Also not watching the Super Bowl but I don’t really care about that anyway. I would like the see Green Day before the game and the halftime show but I can probably find them on YouTube tomorrow or something!

    1. So you don’t have NBC? We’re just watching it on the network. I guess you need either cable or an antenna for that though.
It is nice to have aid stations- but I still say a road marathon is HARD. You usually have a time goal, which I did not have for this run.

  11. Your marathon is impressive, even if it wasn’t an official race. It was also on a trail, so that’s even more impressive!! I’m definitely more of a summer Olympics fan, but I do like some of the skiing and speed skating. I can’t remember if it was you or another blogger, but I have a HS friend who has a son on the bobsled team…it’s his second time at the Olympics, and he’s the “driver”on the 4-man sled this time! I’m looking forward to watching that!

    1. Ooh, it’s fun to have a reason to watch an event and root for the team. The speed skating when they’re just going around and around in circles is kind of boring to me, but the downhill skiing is thrilling. And, like everyone else, I’ll watch the figure skating.

  12. Wow, way to go on your marathon! I don’t care if it’s not official, it was a real 26.2 miler!! That’s even harder to do! We watched the Olympics this past weekend with my inlaws – we watched opening ceremonies and then it was on all weekend in our cabin.

  13. I watched part of the Super Bowl, mostly for the music acts, and I was somewhat cheering for the Seahawks (because they’re a West Coast team), I don’t really have an alliance though.
Brrr, you really had some cold days there… it was foggy and cool here in the mornings but not that cold!
Good for you for fitting in a long run during the week (was that your day off?). I always do the long runs on the weekend.

  14. Congrats on that looooong run! Your training is going well. I feel inspired to get up and run! I feel so completely out of shape right now. I’m sure it’s not a surprise, but the winter olympics are my favorite. We did watch the Super Bowl… while I worked on my computer. I’m not really into football but I thought it seemed a bit boring? The condo we are staying in has Peacock service so we are getting to see a lot of the Olympics!

  15. I prefer the Winter Olympics. I think partly because it’s such a nice break in the middle of the doldrums of the ice and cold where I live!

I didn’t watch a single second of the Super Bowl but I was rooting for Seattle, so I was happy to hear they won 🙂

  16. Fantastic job on your 26.2-mile training run! Hey, a marathon is a marathon, no matter the surface it’s run on. I don’t hear anyone taking credit away from runners running a trail marathon over a road one. Besides running on the uneven and sometimes sandy or unpredictable surfaces can be harder than on pavement.

Here’s hoping our meet-up works out for later this week!

  17. That seems more like the roundup of a month than a week!

Glad you’re recovering and that sleep-in Sunday came in useful!

SO excited for your next ultra!

  18. The skiathalon blew me away– that looks SO HARD. The Superbowl/Olympics combo is so fantastic. I loved all of my Sunday sportsball viewing.

  19. I love the Olympics in general, but the Winter Games are my favorite. I like more of the events – in that, I will watch just about all of them. The only one I really cannot/do not watch is hockey, lol … But all the skating disciplines I am a big fan of. Also skiing and snowboarding. 🙂
    Summer Olympics I’m predominately a Gymnastics and Swimming/Diving fan, so there’s a lot of the sports I don’t watch…

  20. I am so impressed that you ran a full marathon as part of your training strategy. You are a rockstar.

This weekend, I watched a little of the Olympics — mainly downhill skiing, which I love. I managed to stay awake for part of the Super Bowl, but I wasn’t really invested in either team, and I felt so bad for Drake Maye that I wasn’t sad to say good night.

  21. That game was pretty dull, although I’m glad the Seahawks won. Their owner seems like an incredible human, and I love that for them!

You are getting those long runs in! I’m proud of you, and you’re doing great in the cold!

I love the figure skating, so I think I prefer winter Olympics. then again, I haven’t watched much, so I don’t really have much of a say.
