walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown-Homecoming!

Hi there! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) This week was a little light on the strength training, but full in other ways (hey, it’s all about balance, right???) Here’s how it all played out…

Sunday

A 4 mile run to start the day! At this point I was still grappling with that SI joint pain, but it was about 50% better than it had been earlier in the week.

Monday

No school because of Yom Kippur! I slept in a little, and when I woke up… my SI joint was 100% better. HOORAY! I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout before work. After work I had a walk planned, but it was raining. Instead I did a bunch of housework I had been putting off when my back was so sore, and that felt good.

Tuesday

I had a great trail run! It was planned 10 miles but I made it 11, because it was mostly overcast, which makes SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE. I also saw some wildlife, but not the cute, lovable kind. First a snake- just a harmless black one curled up on the trail, which slithered away as I came near. THEN I saw this guy (girl?):

GAH.

There’s an official name for them, but we call them “banana spiders.”  They’re huge and scary looking (just for reference, you can see a “normal” size spider also in this web) and not deadly, but I sure wouldn’t want to get bitten by one. This web went across the trail, just a couple inches above my head (the next tall person who comes along is going to get a BIG SURPRISE). For the rest of this run I thought about how many other spiders there were out there that I wasn’t seeing… eek.

I also took a mushroom picture for Wendy.

Wednesday

In the morning…. a 4 mile run.

Later in the day I cautiously did some lower body strength, which I avoided all last week because of my low back /SI joint pain. Everything felt good!

Thursday

In the morning- CG deadbug workout again and upper body strength, which was strangely absent the rest of the week (oops). After work, a 45 minute walk, and then… high school football game!

It was our homecoming game, and we won 57-0. The field was wet from all the rain we’ve been having, so the band played their halftime show on the track (once again). Everyone was in high spirits, and it was a super fun night.

Friday

Oof. These Thursday night games are hard! My daughter went to school a little late so I was able to get in a 5 mile run.

It wasn’t until I put this post together that I realized I wore the same shirt for three of my runs this week, ha ha.

At night… homecoming dance! Angie’s boyfriend is now a freshman in college, but he’s still local so he took her to the dance. I don’t think he has any interest in high school events anymore, but he knew it was important to her. What a great guy!

There were some late night shenanigans which I won’t get into, other than to mention that I had to go out around midnight to pick up one of Angie’s friends, whose mother was on her way to urgent care. This sounds very serious, until I found out she went to urgent because she had… pinkeye. PINKEYE??? WHO goes to urgent care in the middle of the night for pinkeye? People are very strange.

Saturday

Ouch. I “mysteriously” slept through my alarm, and only had time for an abbreviated lower body workout before work. The good news is, I did weighted squats for the first time since the SI joint issue, and everything felt fine. That episode is officially done!

Sunday

On tap for today- a 5 mile run. Then, grocery shopping and some sort of fun football dinner.

How was your week? Any giant spider (or other spooky wildlife) sightings?

Woohoo! We had a high school football game tonight, and it was Senior Night, where they honor all the seniors

  1. Yay for a fine SI joint!
I wore the same running shirt three times as well this week – it’s so handy when I can take it straight off the drying line without first folding it and putting it away.
Midnight visit to urgent care for pinkeye… oh my goodness, the things people do!

    1. Yes, I should have specified that I did WASH the shirt! And then it was right there, all clean and ready to go so I kept grabbing it, lol.

  2. Glad to hear the SI joint is behaving! It sounds like a great week for you–that banana spider is HUGE! My friend Holly, who lives in Alabama, had a giant one outside her bedroom window a few years ago. That was the first time I realized that spiders poop. Ewww…

Thank you for the mushroom photo. Is my obsession that obvious? :p

As a former ER nurse, you can only imagine my thoughts on anyone going to the ER with pinkeye. At our ERs, that person would be waiting a very long time to be seen…

    1. Yep, I’m sure they have them in Alabama too. I’m trying to decide if I would like having one outside my bedroom window or not.
Ha ha… I hope she had a TERRIBLE time in the ER- she really screwed up my night.

  3. Wow, that was a busy week! So nice of you to pick up your daughter’s friend. I can’t imagine going to the ER in the middle of the night for pink eye, but maybe it was REALLY bothering her? My only late night trips were when my son had croup (as a baby) and I had my first asthma attack (as an adult).

Oof on the homecoming game score!

Yay on feeling good and adding a mile to your long run. That’s fantastic.

    1. I mean… I had pinkeye a couple summers ago. It wasn’t fun, but definitely didn’t warrant a trip to Urgent Care in the middle of the night!

  4. I hate spiders. But snakes are worse.

Glad your si joint pain is gone.

My lower back ached during my race. Always something. Appt at chiro tomorrow

    1. The snakes I’ve seen have been harmless and slithered away before I got to them. On the other hand, I could have run right into that spider web if I were just a little taller.
I hope your back feels better- the chiro should help.

  5. Hope your daughter had sun at homecoming. I also saw some scary spiders this week! Not a fan. I bet the overcast weather helps a ton for you. Glad your SI joint is feeling better this week

  6. Spiders don’t typically bother me compared to other bugs, but that one is insane! I am so glad I didn’t come across it and I do feel better if I tell a person ran into it. So glad your pain is feeling better! Sounds like you are back to the swing of things. Staying up late to pick up kids after homecoming is not something that I’m yet familiar with, but it sounds like a late night!

  7. Glad to hear that your SI joint pain is in the rearview mirror!

Spiders don’t really bother me, but that guy looks huge! I’m the spider control person in our house, at least I was when the boys were in high school. I’d come home from work and they’d have a solo cup turned upside on a spider waiting for me to come home and “take care of it.” Here’s another much more disturbing spider story: I was running with a group of friends on a trail and I was in front. We ran right into a web stretching across the trail while I was talking, and you guessed it, suddenly there was something in my mouth. I started gagging and spitting and we could only assume it was either the spider or his prey that I’d almost ingested. 🙁

  8. Ooooh the spider! What a pity you didn’t get a sharper picture of it! I LOVE spiders. I wouldn’t want the big ones crawling on me, but I still love them. They are beautiful and interesting creatures. A bit eew about having a web with large spiders on the actual trail though. I had a giant house spider just outside the door some week ago. I think Elsa took it because I saw it crushed on the door mat the day after.
Such great news about your lower back!!!
Regarding going to the ER, people ARE strange.

    1. Yes, I wish I had gotten a clearer photo. I definitely don’t want them crawling on me, but they’re fascinating. And creepy, though.

    1. Thank you Elisabeth! And, I’m the only one in my family who’s had pinkeye- it wasn’t fun! (but- not so bad that I went to Urgent care, either.)

  9. You got in lots of great runs! I actually don’t mind spiders since most of them are harmless and I love when I see a tarantula on the trail even though I know lots of people think they’re creepy because they’re so big. Snakes are ok too except we have a lot of rattlesnakes that I have to be wary of, but the non-venemous ones can be kinda cute as they slither away! I don’t think I’d want to run into a spiderweb though.

It was race week for me and it went well! The race was a 12 hour timed event up and down a ski slope so the focus was more on elevation gain than mileage. It was super tough and I got in 4 laps, or 15 miles with 8400 feet of gain, which is more than I’ve ever gotten at once! And I surprisingly got my first podium finish since there were only 4 women doing the event and I beat out one of them for distance covered to get 3rd place. I wasn’t expecting that so I’m very happy, though my quads and glutes are not…

    1. YAY!!! That’s so cool. And, something completely out of my comprehension. Elevation? 8400 feet??? I’m trying to even imagine it. I’m sure your quads are VERY sore today!
Um. I don’t think I’d love seeing a tarantula. I know they’re not dangerous, but they creep me out.

  10. At first I wanted to defend the person going to urgent care because of pinkeye, but I do think you’re right. It can wait until your doctor’s office opens, right?

I am excited that Angie let you take a photo of her! Yay! Her dress looks fabulous!

  11. What a huge win for the homecoming football game! And it looks like good weather for the homecoming dance too. I hope she had a great time. Nice of the boyfriend to come back from college to join her!
I’m glad to hear that your back has improved. It sucks to have limited movement and you have to avoid tasks. My back was feeling a bit sore this week as I got used to my house mattress after sleeping on the camper mattress for so long!

    1. Yes, after all the rain we’ve had, we had good weather for the game and dance, That was lucky. And, back pain really sucks. I hope you’re subsides quickly.

  12. Yikes!! That spider is huge! One upside of the climate in MN is that we don’t have scary snakes or spiders! Not sure it’s quite worth the trade off, though…

Wow what a blowout game! Dang!

I had a shorter weekend as I flew to NYC for work this afternoon. My flight got delayed and then we were in a holding pattern due to a rainstorm so it wasn’t the most pleasant flight experience but now I’m on my way to my hotel. I guess the winds are 50mph so I will not be venturing out!

Here’s fun running tidbit for you. The Vikings had a punt returned for a TD against Tampa Bay today and the guy who guy was clocked at a max speed of 20mph. Isn’t that insane? If you are bored, you should look up a video clip of it. It’s like you are watching him in double time or something. It’s wild how fast he is!! It was an 86 yd TD return so he ran for a decent distance!

    1. OH THAT’S SO COOL!!! I will definitely watch that video. And that speed- how is it even possible???
Enjoy your time in NYC- hopefully that storm has passed by now.

  13. Best update ever that the SI pain took a hike! Let’s hope it stays gone!!!

Of course I feel bad for the mom with the late night urgent care visit, but like you I’m giggling at bit at the reason. Maybe the kids were getting to be a bit much and she took the first excuse that she could think of to get away for some peace and quiet.

  14. Ewww, that spider is creepy (as are ALL spiders, in my opinion). I once c as ne across a gigantic spider web that spanned the distance between a picnic shelter & a tree..probably 6-8 feet (?). I never did see the “artist,” but the web was impressive!

  15. Yay for fine SI joints and extra mile on the trail thanks to good weather. I do terrible with sun in my face and wish there are covers to make it fully covered.
I wouldn’t run in the wild seeing wild animals. I’m so scared of them.

    1. There’s nothing truly scary around here- but I know in different areas people run on trails and see bears and mountain lions! Eeek.

  16. What?! I trip to urgent care at midnight for pinkeye?! I did one time plan my urgent care visit for 5am because I knew the weight time would be less. I had been bit by a wild kitten and since I was pregnant I was advised to get a rabies shot. The bit itself didn’t need medical attention, and I had two small children at home that needed childcare, so I just waited until 5am to go in. But had a child or friend needed to be picked up at that same time, I would have gladly put off my urgent care trip and dealt with those needs first!
And, also- spiders. I grew up overseas and we had something they called “camel spiders”. They are large and one time one ran across our kitchen floor and it was so big we thought it was a RAT! Can you imagine? NO THANK YOU. I have a healthy dislike for all spiders, but I’m fine as long as they stay in their spot and I can stay in mine.

  17. Eek, snakes and spiders… no thank you. I have yet to see a rattle snake on one of my runs by the river. I know they are there, but I’ve never actually seen one.
Sounds like you had some great runs and I am glad your SI joint is not bothering you too much.

  18. That is so nice that college boyfriend agrees to go to her high school dance. What on earth with the late night shenanigans and you being the parent that has to go pick up her kid while she gets her pink eye looked at? Go to urgent care in the morning. Goodness.

  19. I am baffled by a Homecoming dance on a Friday. I must be old. LOL. I’m glad you had a good week (overall) and that you are feeling better. Clearly, whatever you did worked.
