walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Humidity, Side Planks and Fireworks

Hellooo! Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) My husband was out of town this week, so it was just me and my daughter, and we had a good time (and, I had a “good time” chauffeuring her and her friends around…) Overall it was a nice week. Let’s get into it!

Sunday

5 mile run outside! This was the longest run I’ve done since my race in April, and also my first run outside in over a week. Luckily it was overcast and I brought along water, so I didn’t overheat too much. The last mile got hard but overall I counted it as a success.

Monday

Leg day at the gym! Focused on squats, and here I am doing the glute push machine…

I finished the workout with side planks with leg lifts- I can now do 3 sets of 15 reps on each side! When I started these I could barely get through five on my left side.

Tuesday

Rest day!

Wednesday

4 mile run at the nice, air conditioned gym. I threw in some tempo intervals, and it felt pretty good.

Thursday

In the morning I did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, and after work I did my hip stability exercises.

Friday

Woohoo! I had the day off- Happy 4th! I got up early to do another 5 mile run outside. Luckily it was overcast again, but the humidity just about killed me. I was so tired in the last mile (well, that’s what you get when you do half your runs on the treadmill at the gym!)

Gasping for breath.

BUT!!!!  This was the first run where I didn’t feel my hamstring AT ALL. That hamstring pain has been plaguing me since February, so this was a major win. I finished this run exhausted and elated.

Before dinner I did an upper body workout at home, knowing that I wouldn’t get to the gym the next day. And then, I spent the evening reading on the couch, while listening to fireworks go off all around my neighborhood.

Saturday

It was a complicated day of work, driving my daughter to the gym, and picking my husband up from the airport. I also didn’t get to sleep until late on Friday night because our neighbors had a huge party with loud music and fireworks. Sigh.

In the morning I did a Caroline Girvan abs workout, and then before dinner I did a lower body workout at home, including all my hip stability exercises. I’ll never complain about them again! I’m convinced those exercises are keeping my hamstring happy.

Sunday

On tap- work. Ugh! I hate working on Sundays, but I’m just going in for a few hours since I had Friday off. Then… a trip to the gym with my daughter, where I’ll run on the treadmill.

Hooray- I feel like I’m back on track. Oh, and I officially registered for the race on my birthday- March 21st. I’ll be turning 60, and will be aiming to run 60 miles! It’s a big goal but I have plenty of time to train for it.

How was your week? Did you see fireworks?

Do you have a big goal right now?

Tuesday Topics and FIGS!

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. 60 x 60!!! I am here for it! A run with no hamstring pain!!! I’m here for that as well.

Our city fireworks were last night. They are held in a park about a mile from our house, which tends to get crowded, so we usually watch them from another park that’s just at the end of our street which has “good enough” views. This year we decided to hoof it to the big park, and the extra effort was so worth it. The views were spectacular.

    1. If the park is a mile from your house, that means you can walk there! That makes a big difference- the driving, parking, and then sitting in traffic for an hour trying to get home is what put me over the edge. I haven’t gone anywhere to see fireworks in years.

  2. 60 on your 60th! What a great way to celebrate (well if ultras are your thing, which they are for you!!).

We have had some Florida-like humidity and heat this week. I ran 3 miles on Friday and it was such a hard run. Luckily it cooled off for my 6 mile run yesterday. I do not think I could have ran 6 miles in Friday’s heat. The feels like temps was over 100 that day so it was kind of miserable.

It rained on the 4th at night so there were no fireworks. But then everyone was setting them off last night. So Paul was up until 10:30 because it was pointless to try to get him to fall asleep with all the loud booms. He loved watching them, though.

    1. Oh, that’s too bad it rained on the 4th! I guess it’s lucky it’s a holiday weekend so fireworks could still happen the next night- but I agree, it’s not great with small children or pets.
Ugh, it’s the humidity! It makes running SO HARD.

  3. Oooh 60 for 60! That’s huge!
So glad your hammie is feeling better – maybe the humidity helps? Maybe? Or maybe it’s just finally healed up?
It’s absolutely beautiful here right now. This isn’t a very humid place at all, in fact it’s quite dry, and the weather has been lovely! Too hot for Rexie though so we are walking even earlier than usual.

    1. Well, Rex is so big and furry- I can see how he wouldn’t enjoy the heat. You’re lucky it’s dry though!

  4. Running 60 miles on your 60th is very ambitious, and will make for quite a celebration 😉 That is such great news on the hammy pain being MIA! I had to laugh about your comment on running inside (with air conditioning) makes the outdoor runs even tougher. Although I don’t do the ‘mill in the summer (as if I even had a working one, LOL), keeping the runs outdoors maintains my heat tolerance. I know not everyone is a fan of that strategy, but it works well for me. Besides, I hate being indoors…

  5. I know- I used to persist in running outdoors for that very reason. But I’ve finally given up. At least partially- I mean I still run outside but I don’t have the heat tolerance anymore. Oh well.

  6. Yay for no hamstring pain, and for signing up for your big birthday race! I’m a fan of birthday races, as I did a beautiful trail marathon in the mountains of southern Utah on my birthday last year and it was an amazing way to spend the day.

You would probably laugh if I told you it felt humid here this week — it was like 40-50% when I was running in the mornings and that felt rough for this desert girl, but we did get a bit of rain so that was good.

My big goal right now is the Sedona Canyons 125 next May! But it’s still so far out that I’m mostly focused on my next race, which is “just” a 50K in late September. And then I signed up for the 60K distance at the race I DNFd earlier this year that takes place next January, to kind of kick off training for the 125!

    1. A 125, WOW!!! Is that linked to Cocodona? That is definitely a big goal. I was also thinking I should do a 50k in training for my birthday race- i’ll have to look around and see if I can find one that fits my timeline.

      1. It is part of Cocodona! I’m really nervous but also excited because it’s gonna be an amazing adventure. You should definitely see if you can find a 50K near you before your 60 mile — I did a 50K about 6 weeks out from my 100K attempt and I think it really helped me to dial in my gear and nutrition plans!

  7. What a fun race goal! It’s nice to have something that “matches” – it feels like it will be extra incentive and extra special?

No fireworks for me and no real “goal” although I am aiming to move my body in some way every single day until the end of the year, now. Exercise has been hit and miss for me lately and so I’m aiming for either a walk, run, yoga, gym, or pilates. It can be short, but a little something each day. We’ll see how it goes. I know it’s important for my mood and sleep but it’s so easy to slip out of the practice, especially when life gets busy or challenging in some way.

I’m so glad you’re seeing major improvements with your hamstring pain. What a relief it must have been to run without any discomfort!!

    1. I like that goal, and I think it fits you. I don’t think you’d be happy with a goal where you have to do one specific thing every day- giving yourself the option to move your body in some way, your choice, seems doable and enjoyable. I agree- it’s very easy to slip out of the habit of things, even things we know are working for us.

  8. Whoa, 60 miles on your 60th birthday is super cool!! How do you feel about it, knowing how it feels to run 50?
And I’m so happy to hear about your quiet hamstring. Nice work with the leg lifts. I remember when I did them it was so hard, I can’t imagine doing 15! I did a lot of them (but not from a plank position) when I had my stress fracture. I think doing them again will trigger some bad memories! Hopefully doing the plank will make it different.
My only goal right now is to be able to squat my bodyweight again and feel strong doing it. Oh, and better pull-ups!

  9. I’d like to do better pull ups, but I’m a long, long way from squatting my bodyweight. Maybe I can set that as a lifetime goal.
To answer your question, I feel like the 60 miles will be hard (of course) but doable. There are no hills in this race, but of course there’s always something hard in any race course. Lots of running and lots of strength work in my future!

  10. Great job on the side planks with leg lifts. Those are challenging!! That’s exciting about your birthday race. Does it have more than one distance and your goal is at least 60 miles? I’m glad to hear your pain is gone away. I hope it’s for good!
We did go to two days of fireworks, and after that my husband didn’t want to go to any more 🙂 It’s hard to get outside at 9pm and drive some place haha!

    1. Yes, the race is actually a 33 hour run- you can run as much or as little as you want in that time period. I’m PRETTY SURE I won’t be running for 33 hours! I’ll hope to get to 60 and then call it good.

  11. It must feel good to be running pain free after months of dealing with hamstring issues. even the humidity is not that bad when you feel normal right? which as we age comes less common (pain free and normal).

  12. Hooray for no hamstring pain at all!! So glad you’re feeling better. And wow 60 miles for your 60th? That sounds like quite the way to celebrate — but definitely rewarding!

  13. Hooray for no hamstring pain! I agree with you that doing those hip stability exercises is helping your hamstring. I need to do some work on my adductors. Thanks for the reminder about the side planks with leg lifts. It’s really a never ending quest, isn’t it?

We had a quiet 4th here, too, well, relatively speaking. Our neighborhood is fireworks central–someone even commented on our neighborhood Facebook group about the professional display at one of the retention ponds. Guess I missed out!

  14. I’m at my sister’s house dealing with family issues. There isn’t a lot of space to do workouts, so I took myself for a “run” on Saturday. Well, it was like a million percent humidity and in the low 80s and I am obviously NOT TRAINED for this, so I ran for two miles and then had to walk back covered in sweat and more sweat. So that’s how things are here. It’s cooler today. We’ll see if I manage to get any sort of workout in.

  15. What race?

I’m planning a race in Asheville on March 21. Only 13.1 miles.

Glad your hamstring is feeling better.

I attempted 2 miles in heat and humidity. Ugh!!
