walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Reflections

Hey hey! Thanks for joining me for the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!)  i had some good runs this week, but they sure looked different from summers past. I used to consider myself a Heat Warrior (running outside no matter how hot it was) and now I’m more of a Heat Wimp. But you know what… that’s okay! There’s no “running police” to come and tell me I’m doing it wrong. Running can be whatever we want it to be… and this summer, I want it to be in the AC. Ha… well, most of the time, anyway.

Sunday

4 mile treadmill run!

Monday

Leg day at the gym! Squats, glute press machine, hip thrusts… the usual.

Tuesday

Rest day!

Wednesday

Another 4 mile treadmill run at the gym, with a little speed work thrown in.

New and exciting angle, ha ha.

Followed this with some core, and side planks with leg lifts.

Thursday

Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, hip stability exercises, and upper body strength involving my arch nemesis, the pull up bar. Trying to hit a little bit of everything because my options for strength workouts will be limited next week…

Friday

5 mile run OUTSIDE! I got out early, and wore my hydration vest with an icy cold bottle of water.

Definitely felt better than my 5 miler last week!

Saturday

Travel day! I flew to Austin, TX, where I rented a car and drove about an hour to La Grange (I know- I had never heard of it either).I fully expected to step outside into 110 degree heat, but it WASN’T THAT BAD. It had just rained and was still overcast, and I thought… “I could actually go for a run!”

How’s that for a photo op?

You guys… this is what running is all about! 4 miles of exploring this little town, and I loved every minute of it. There’s nothing like seeing a new place on your own two feet. (Photos coming up in my trip recap!)

At night… I heard my son play in the final concert of his festival.

Taking bows after Mahler 1!

Sunday

We will be hitting the road early- (good thing I got that run in yesterday!) We have two days of driving up to Chicago ahead of us. I’m not sure when or how, but workouts will happen.

Have you ever been to La Grange, Texas? – ha ha… I’ll give you a prize if you say “yes.”

Are you a Heat Warrior this summer?

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. I just went down a LaGrange rabbit hole. I’ve been to LaGrange, GA and there is another LaGrange in the CHI area. IN and NY also have LaGranges. Apparently it’s the new Springfield!

Team Anti-Heat Warrior here! I never “acclimatized” to the heat and toward the end of my running career the heat was making me pretty sick. There’s a reason why treadmills were invented. Oddly enough I love a really hot summer day, and you know my favorite thing in life is going to the beach in FL in July/August – but the key word there is “beach”.

Enjoy your travels and I can’t wait to live vicariously through them on the blog.

    1. Oh yes- I have a story about getting confused between La Grange GA and LA Grange TX while researching things to do. It’s coming up in my trip recap.
Great point- there’s a reason why treadmills were invented.

  2. Have the best time on your road trip with Paul!! I am glad the weather cooperated in La Grange (nope, never been there!!) so you could fit a run in.

It’s been a hot summer for us so I have done plenty of gross, steamy runs. This week I had to run on a treadmill in Boston. I was going to try to run outdoors but it looked like I would mostly be on sidewalks of city streets. No thank you. I did a CG strength training workout in the basement yesterday since I didn’t have time for a long run before a bday party. Will played while I did the workout and then asked why I was all wet. Ha. It was a HIIT dumbbell workout so very hard. And shortly I will head out to run around 6 miles. Kind of a late start but it’s the way it goes since I am the morning parent. It’s not too bad out this am though as the humidity is low!

    1. I’m definitely hoping for decent weather in the midwest this week! We will be near Chicago for two days- fingers crossed. But if it’s hot, it’s hot That’s what summer is all about!
I would definitely opt for a treadmill run over city sidewalks!

  3. I am a heat wimp this summer for sure.

That is an amazing photo op in La Grange — can’t wait to see more.

Congrats to your son — save travels to Chicago!

  4. You’re correct, there’s no right or wrong to where you run and you’ve got to do what works for you, especially if safety and the risk of overheating is involved.

I’ve never been to Texas or any of the other gulf coast states other than Florida. A southerly road trip to cover those states is on our bucket list.

  5. I’m a warrior in the sense that I fight to get out when we finally get hot weather, haha! This week was fantastic in that sense, but with some downsides as well. You’ll understand if you read my post.
You’re right, running is whatever you want it to be. And if you prefer it on the treadmill sometimes, that’s fine too.
    Enjoy your trip to Chicago!

  6. How fun that you were able to get a run in a new-to-you place! And that mural in your photo is pretty cute.

I’m definitely a heat warrior because I have to be here in AZ! Or I’d have to resign myself to the treadmill from May – October and that sounds way worse to me than slogging it out in the heat. I actually don’t mind it too much for my weekday runs, it’s having to plan around the heat for my long runs that gets tricky — sometimes I’m able to go up to the mountains to “escape” the heat (it’s still like 80 degrees but that’s better than 100+) but that adds drive time or if I choose to run at lower elevation, I have to get up way too early to try to get it done, but I’m still spending 4-5 hours running in the heat! I really need to stop signing up for ultras in the fall because then I have to train through the hottest months…

Hopefully the rest of your road trip goes well and you find time to fit in some workouts!

  7. Enjoy your trip! My heat here is nothing compared to the heat near you. It was in the upper 70s when I went for my run this morning but it was “feels like” 90s and I thought that I’m finally getting used to it. I realize that’s nothing! I’ve never been to LaGrange. Enjoy your trip!

  8. What? You’re coming to Chicago? I’m sure you are completely booked, but if you want to meet up, let me know.

I love that photo of you running in front of that mural. Beautiful capture. And I get it about running in the heat. I don’t like it either, but it’s the humidity that kills me. I loathe the treadmill, so it has to be really bad for me to run inside.

  9. Road trip to Chicago! Hope you have a fun journey. This is related to your son going to college there? I will not judge at all about you running indoors. I have had enough of the heat and humidity we are having here in Ohio, so I’m almost ready to hit the treadmill too.
Glad you were able to see your son’s performance. Enjoy your family time!

  10. Heat warrior? I think you know my answer 😉
I agree, the best way to explore a new town is on your feet (preferably while wearing running shoes). That mural is nice! The colors are incredible 😉

  11. I used to be quite the heat warrior as well but I just can’t anymore. That’s ok as you say-you do what you can. Exploring a city on foot is always great. Hope the rest of your trip goes well!

  12. I don’t like running in the heat, but I usually manage to get my run in before it’s too hot here. Also, I do not live in Florida. I don’t like running on a tread mill. I’ve not been to LaGrange, TX but did you know there’s a LaGrange, IL? The concert venue is beautiful. Have a safe drive to Chicago.

  13. Your trip has started! How exciting!
I’ve never thought about exploring a town while running four miles in the heat… Jenny you teach me new things all the time!

  14. I’ve never been to La Grange, Texas, but I have been to La Grange, WI and La Grange, IL. Does that give me any bonus points?

    Happy trip!!

  15. I’ve never heard of La Grange, but it sounds like a cool place to check out. Texas isn’t really on my list of places I’d like to go back to (although I do need to run a race there for my 50 states), so I’m not sure I’ll ever make it there.

I’m so glad you got to see your son play.

And it’s ok to run inside if that’s what you’re feeling. You have to do what works for you!

  16. I am such a wuss with the heat. I hate the cold, but I almost equally hate the heat. I am so difficult to please!
But the heat drains me of energy big time. My husband LOVES getting hot and sweaty and is keen to exercise in the hottest time of the day. Um…no thanks. I’m not a psychopath! Mid-afternoon calls for sparkling water and the AC.

  17. It’s like Florida here but I can’t make myself get on a treadmill..

Sounds like your trip is going well… and the diet?

I agree… running is the best way to see a new place.
