Hey there! I’m writing this post while listening to fireworks all around. The cats are scared (Muffin, hiding under the bed) and worried (Sylvie and Foxy). It’s Sylvie’s first fireworks! How exciting for her.
As usual, I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown (thanks, ladies!) Here’s how the week played out…
Sunday
I did a strength workout at home of lower body (lunges, banded side steps, step ups) and shoulders. Later in the day I walked for 40 minutes.
Monday
4 mile run in the morning!

Tuesday
Ooh, this was hard. I had an appointment mid-morning, so instead of going to my normal trail I ran on a cross country trail in a nearby park. There was very little shade (see top photo) and it was HOT. I really struggled in the second half but finished 10 miles. As usual I was glad I did it!

Wednesday
Leg day at the gym! Last time I did heavy squats and deadlifts, my low back was NOT happy. I paid extra attention to my form this time, and it seemed better.

Later in the day I walked for an hour while I talked to my son about ALL THINGS WEDDING! It’s three weeks away!
Thursday
I was still traumatized from the heat on that 10 mile run, so I took this run to the treadmill. 4 miles with some speedwork thrown in. Later in the day- hip mobility exercises.

Friday
I had an insane work day. Since we were closed on Saturday for the holiday, they asked if I wanted to work Sunday instead. Well actually- no, I DON’T want to work Sunday. Instead I added hours to this day, and worked a ten hour shift. In light of that, I didn’t do any other exercise (although- foreshadowing!- I wish I had done yoga when I got home).
Saturday
Happy 4th! I slept late, and then went to the gym for a 5 mile run on the treadmill. My legs felt good, but my low back was cranky. I blame the long work day.

Later in the day- Adriene’s yoga for runners, and a shoulder workout.
We ended up doing nothing to celebrate, because my husband has a man-cold. Ahem. He thinks he might be dying, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be A-OK! He slept a lot, while I did my own thing- reading and napping. We ended up getting pizza for dinner from Mod with vegan cheese. I haven’t had pizza in a long time! It was yummy.
Sunday
On tap for today- lower body strength workout, and a walk. I’m trying to walk on the days I don’t run- this week I succeeded, other than Friday where I gave myself a pass.
How was your week? Did you celebrate the 4th?

Ah what a bummer that your husband has a man-cold (haha) and you didn’t do anything for the holiday. But for what it is worth, we didn’t do anything either… Jon’s not into the holiday and I just hung out in the hammock and also spent some time in the kitchen (making all kinds of treats). 🙂
I am glad you opted for the treadmill when it’s so hot outside. I’d take the treadmill over heat and humidity any day!
Yeah, if I can’t get up super early (or, if I don’t WANT to get up super early) it’s just too hot to run. I’m glad I have the treadmill option.
Spending time in the hammock sounds like a perfect July 4th to me!
I hope your husband is feeling better soon! It sounds like you did the best you can to beat the heat. I think sticking to the treadmill was the right thing to do. And all of that cross training and yoga will definitely pay off as you know. We celebrated the holiday with my husband’s family, they live right near the lake and there’s a big fireworks show.
My husband is already feeling better, although I don’t know how he got any sleep last night- fireworks were still going off at 2 am.
Fireworks on the lake sounds FUN!
Uff, a 10-hour work shift sounds tough!
A quiet Saturday with pizza actually sounds very nice. Our favourite pizzeria was closed yesterday and we ended up eating flatbread with kimchi… it was quite awful!
Walking on your days off from running is a great idea!
Ooh… I’m glad I didn’t have to eat flatbread with kimchi, lol (although- my stomach probably would have liked it more than the pizza I had).
You made me laugh with the man-cold…. I do the same when my husband gets “sick”.
the heat is quite brutal in DC too, I think friday and saturday were peak temperature and they cancelled the parade due to heat. My 12 miles on saturday was humid and hot, but the trail is mostly shadded so it was still manageable. I was glad I did it because we stayed home for the rest of the day as it was so hot to be outside.
Oh wow, it must be REALLY hot there if they canceled the parade! That’s too bad. And yes- shade really makes all the difference. I wish I had a “mostly shaded” trail!
Is your heatwave breaking soon? I know it’s much cooler today in the midwest.
It’s a tough holiday for the fur babies. We’ve either had thunderstorms or fireworks non stop, which means that Doggo has spent a lot of time hiding in the bathroom.
THREE WEEKS UNTIL WEDDING!!!!!!! And you’re pulling double digits in the heat! Lots of exciting stuff going on.
Yes, on top of everything else there was thunder last night as well. It was actually earlier in the evening, before it got dark, and that cats were afraid of it. I was like “Oh just wait- if you think that’s bad wait till you see what’s coming next!” I would love to say I’m glad it’s over, but I know people will be shooting them off tonight again.
10 hours of physical work = gah! that’s a lot. glad you get the FULL sat/sun after though. (i wouldn’t have wanted to work Sunday, either!). for once we are not the most unpleasant place weather-wise I feel like! (though we had storm after storm yesterday- kinda got old!)
Yes, that’s why I don’t mind summers in Florida too much- it’s hot everywhere. It’s when fall starts and we’re still hot that I start to get angry. And yes- Friday was a lot, but I got through it pretty happily, knowing i had two full days to recover.
LOL at being traumatized from your hot run. A treadmill in a/c has its advantages this time of year.
We low-key celebrated the 4th — a friend had a cookout and then we came home to be with Scooby — he was more scared by the storms than distant fireworks.
I was in bed before the D.C. spectacle started but heard it later.
Oh wow- your fireworks were “distant!” Ours were right in our neighborhood, and literally went on for hours. Well, everyone survived and the cats seem back to normal. i know it’s worse for dogs than cats though- glad you were there to comfort Scooby.
Men are the worst with their colds-lol. It was so hot the past few days that is was hard to do anything outside here. A 10 hour work day of giving massages sounds like a lot! Pizza is always a good idea 🙂
Yes, you can never go wrong with pizza! And WHAT IS UP with men and colds??? Why do they always think they’re dying? Sheesh…
My husband has a holiday and trip hangover. He’s spending the day on the couch to recover after our party.
I hope you are super ready for the month ahead! It’s going to be so exciting!
Oof- if I hosted a party I would also need a day on the couch to recover.
I’m slowly but surely getting myself ready for Wedding Week. Emotionally it’s really starting to hit me… but it’s all good.
Standing on your feet giving massages for ten hours sounds grueling! I would do the same so I wouldn’t have to work today.
How exciting that it’s wedding month! So sorry your husband is sick with a cold. Does he think he’ll recover in time for the wedding? 😉
Ha ha Debbie, that is hilarious. I’ll bet if I asked him, he would say “maybe” in an Eeyore-ish tone of voice.
I’m glad you had Saturday off but too bad you had to have a long day Friday to make up for it! It’s a 3 day weekend for me and I did my long run on Friday which was nice, though very hot by the end. And then I only had to do a couple miles yesterday before a pool day! It was a nice day until nighttime when all my parents’ neighbors were setting off huge fireworks, even after 10 pm ugh!
Fireworks were still going strong here till past midnight. I’m sure we’ll hear more tonight because people can’t seem to just use them all up on the 4th, can they? Anyway… I hope you had a nice weekend! It sounds like it was great. Long run on Friday is perfect, so you can relax the rest of the time.
My husband was down for the count on Saturday night due to the long run and afternoon biking. Knocked out by lack of proper hydration I suspect!
That’s so exciting that you have wedding tasks now! You will be crushing those to do lists. Yahoo!! Three more weeks!
Those trails with no shade look TOUGH. I would have melted.
Lisa, I was melting, and I’m pretty used to the heat! If you’re looking for a good hydration/electrolyte drink, I strongly suggest LMNT lemonade iced tea flavor. It even has caffeine! I’ve been loving it for longer runs.
Lucky for us, I guess-lol, Cocoa is deaf and can’t hear the fireworks. The ones up at the lake last night were the loudest I’ve ever heard. It was insane–and a little unnerving. I heard sirens too–I guess a house caught on fire. Sounds like a wild 4th of July for some people!
You know I love the trails, but that does not include XC trails, lol…
Wow, the wedding is only 3 weeks away?! How exciting!!
I was starting to wonder if Foxy was deaf because he didn’t seem phased by the fireworks at first. When they got really intense he finally reacted- but he was the only cat who didn’t hide all evening. I say, if you’re going to set them off, be prepared for your house to burn down. I mean it’s a risk you’re taking!
I’m trying to walk on the days when I don’t run too. It just takes so much time, because first before I walk I do a strength workout. Now that the video is done, I feel like I have time. Lord knows I’m eating like I workout that much, so why not? Some of us went to Ed’s gf’s family’s 4th pool party. It was very nice, but it started to rain and that’s an understatement. Let’s just say the 4th ended with a bit of drama.
You’ve had some “exciting” weather lately, with the heatwave and then storms! Well, what’s a holiday without drama.
The man-cold, LOL! Seriously, they can really revert to little kids with the slightest hint of illness (or injury). I think it was hot and miserable everywhere last week, but we all survived…troopers that we are 😉 I had one of the funnest Fourth’s ever, with a long weekend and a lot of fun activities (and seeing a band last night, with fireworks!).
Wow- I can’t really say I’ve had a “fun” 4th of July in a long time! I mean- mine was just fine. Glad you had such a good one!
Sorry to hear about the man cold. Those can be tough and long lasting!
I was up at my parents Thur night thru this am. I ran 4 miles on Fri and Sat am and felt pretty good. I was able to go to extra OTF classes while the boys were gone as I was able to go to classes after work on my office days. So I went 6 days in a row (Fri through Wednesday!).
A 10 hour day is a long day!! That’s a lot of time on your feet!!
It wasn’t my feet that minded so much, but my back. But now it’s back to normal (which is to say, normally slightly achy. Maybe I need to do more yoga).
Sounds like you had a great week of workouts! You did OTF six days in a row, then ran twice this weekend. You must be feeling great.
I did it! I went to a Fourth of July parade and a BBQ (where I ate exactly four baby carrots and a pistachio chocolate candy)! We put out our flag and everything. I was heartened because the Republican Party had a float with a giant blowup Trump and the crowd noticeably quieted down as it went by. There were two dudes screaming in excitement, but it was basically crickets from everyone else. This is a very red area, so it was nice to see. Not a single other float mentioned him and it was fun. I have a lot of thoughts about parades as it turns out. Maybe I should hire myself out as a parade float consultant.
That trail in the first photo does look scorching! It reminds me of some places in Italy.
I’m glad you’re getting some heavier squats and deadlifts done and yes, form is everything. I must do banded side steps more too. They are so good and probably would work miracles on my hips and lower back (my lower back problem seems almost gone now by the way, there must be something about not sitting at the desk so much).
3 weeks until the wedding! The excitement must be building up big time.
Three weeks until the wedding!!!! Omg! How exciting!
10 miles in the heat. Oh my!!!
I ran a race on the 4th (of course) and went boating the next day…
The wedding is getting closer… so exciting!
