walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Things are Getting Crazy!

It’s been quite a week! Last Sunday I shared that we are “fostering” (ahem, hopefully keeping forever) a new kitten. We also saw 90 degrees to start our week, and are ending the week with a temperature swing of almost 60 degrees! What is even happening??? Anyway… thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly rundown. Let’s get into it!

Sunday

A big long run of 23 miles… and this was HARD. It was a hot day, and my body wasn’t happy. Around mile 18 I felt really awful, nauseous and depleted. I walked for about half a mile, ate some pretzels, and then gradually felt well enough to run again.

It’s been a while since I’ve run in the heat, and I think I need salt pills. Gu Roctane has enough sodium when it’s cool out, but not for the heat. Live and learn! I was glad to finish this run.

Monday

Upper body strength workout. My quads were sore but other than that, I felt good after that long run!

Tuesday

This was the start of our cold weather (stop snickering, you northerners!) It was in the 40s when I woke up, and windy, so brr! Hat and gloves came out for this 4 mile run.

Wednesday

I started the day with hip stability exercises… and then I took down the outdoor Christmas lights. YES, I admit they were still up! But I wasn’t turning them on (that would be bad and weird). It was a big job, but a relief to finally get it done.

Thursday

Brr! It was in the 40s, so once again I bundled up for a 4 mile run.

After work I rushed off to take the kitten to the vet. I just wanted to get her checked out, have them give me an approximate age (six weeks?) and confirm the gender (she’s so tiny we weren’t sure). One of Angie’s friends wanted to do a “gender reveal”, so I kept it a secret from the family until…

She’s a girl!
She wanted a little taste…

Now that we know she’s a girl for sure, we had a big talk about the name. “Evie” has been changed to “Sylvie.” Hopefully this is it and we won’t have any more changes!

Friday

Since I did an abbreviated Weekly Rundown last week, I didn’t mention that I tried a new Caroline Girvan abs workout-Stellar Abs . It’s a very intense and effective 10 minute workout- so effective, in fact, that when I did it last week I hurt myself, straining an oblique on my right side. That hurt for a while, but now I was ready to try the workout again. I was a little more cautious this time, and managed to emerge unscathed. I really recommend this workout- but be careful!
I also did my hip stability exercises, and a lower body strength workout at home.

Saturday

I waited until later in the day, then got out for a 6 mile run. It started off a little chilly (which felt good) and by the end, the sun had set, the wind was picking up, and I was cold!

Then it was home to hunker down for the rest of the evening with a blanket, my book, and a kitten. Our temps are supposed to plummet to 31 degrees tonight! In all the time I’ve lived in South Florida, I don’t think it’s ever been this cold. Do we need to turn on the heat? Does our heat even work??? It’s been years since we’ve had it on.

Snuggle with that blanket, Sylvie!

Sunday

On tap for today… sleeping in! After my incessant whining about the heat, I’m glad I’m not running today (next long run is Wednesday). Early in the morning, our “feels like” temp is supposed to be… 17 degrees. I don’t even own clothes for those conditions. I’ll be safely inside sipping my hot tea!

Tell me your crazy weather stories!

Have you ever done a gender reveal for a kitten?

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. I love Sylvie! Great name for a sweet little kit.
Weather just cold cold cold here in Illinois. The school district closed twice last week due to extreme cold- wind chills about -20°F. Stay warm- it looks like Sylvie knows how to spend your cold days – snuggled on a warm blanket!

    1. I know all about your weather! I follow it closely since my son and sister are both in IL. I think I would shrivel up and die if I lived up there.
Yes, lots of blankets and kitten cuddles today!

  2. Ohhh that kitten!! A great name. She could be a Russian blue or a mix…
We have -8 F real feel in NJ at the moment. But now more snow, just terrible wind and cold. Brrrr.

    1. Eek- I remember those super cold temps from growing up in IL- but I can’t even imagine it now.
We think she’s a Russian blue, although probably really a mix. Definitely not a purebread!

  3. I’d say that Sylvie is now an official family member! She’s so cute!

Great job on your long run!! When is your race?

Crazy that cold is reaching you guys in South Florida. I won’t even go into the details about how cold it has been here. At least the sun is out!!

    1. Oh, I know how cold it’s been there! My son sends me regular updates.
My race is March 21st. Still time to get more long runs in before then.
I’m 99.9% sure Sylvie is here to stay.

  4. I love the name Sylvie! It’s so pretty! I liked Evie, too, and have a niece with that name. The gender reveal was very fun!

So our Christmas lights are still up – and still come on every day! I know, I know. But we need all the light we can get in these dark days. I plan to take them down in February. I am thinking of them as ‘winter lights’. They are white so aren’t Christmasy.

Burr! That is cold! You don’t have to justify it for us northerners. That is cold for you guys. We complain about the heat in the summer and that is just your every day weather. So complain away. I hope this cold snap ends soon. What a rollercoaster of a week!!

I’ll have to check out that CG ab workout. First I need to do the dead bug one. I did at least look it up this week. I thought it might be body weight only so was going to do it in Vegas in my hotel room but then saw it requires weights. I need to knock that off my 25 in ‘26 list soon!

    1. You could do that deadbug workout with no weights to start with. But Stellar Abs is bodyweight only!
I still have a strand of white lights in my living room, and I agree, white is wintery. My outdoor lights were brightly colored, lol. i haven’t turned them on since New Years, and they were just hanging there, mocking me all month.
I like Sylvie- but I don’t want to keep changing the name! I keep wanting to call her “Evie”. Make up your mind, kids- we need to stick with one name.

  5. Well done on that 23 mile long run! That’s really hard, especially in the heat! But excellent training for your upcoming 60-miler. The harder the long run feels, the better you will be prepared for race day. Great job, Jenny!

    1. Thank you Catrina, and you’re right. When I’m suffering in my 60 miler I can remember this run and how I wanted to stop but kept going. There’s always a second wind coming up if you keep moving forward!

  6. Kitten gender reveal cupcakes! Sylvie!!! Just when I thought I was already dead from cuteness I have died again.

I can’t comprehend of not having to use your heat, but that tracks with what the weather was like at this time last year when I was in your part of the world. Brrr! This morning it was zero degrees, which is a huge improvement over the -10 that we’ve had for the past two mornings, but somehow it feels colder.

    1. Yes- I recommend that anyone suffering from winter blues get a kitten immediately. In fact I’ll be happy to send everyone a kitten! You can’t help smiling when Sylvie is around, and everything she does (even using the litter box) is cute.
Yep! Remember what it was like one year ago here??? January and February are a real crapshoot here. I feel REALLY bad for anyone visiting Florida right now!

  7. Too cute on the gender reveal! I guess it’s not as obvious as dogs? Spoken like a true non pet owner lol. Congrats on powering through your long run on a tough day. WE are still stuck in the deep freeze here good luck to you. You do look cute in your hat and shorts 🙂

    1. I don’t know about dogs. Sylvie is so young that it made identifying the gender tricky. I know too many people who have a girl cat named “Oscar” or “Miles” because of being misgendered as a baby- so we wanted to be sure!
Ha- I don’t own running tights!

  8. Definitely turn on the heat! Little Sylvie can only warm you up so much! <3

LOL on the gender reveal — how cute!

I have all the cold weather running gear, just no mojo for it — and while our streets our clear the sidewalks are not.

    1. Since you have indoor options you might as well use them. It’s not worth it to slip on the ice!
I wouldn’t have done a gender reveal, but the kids wanted it and this girl is a really talented baker (and decorator). She was happy to do it!

  9. How fun to have a gender reveal! I love the name sylvie. We definitely had some crazy weather here, we have about 2 ft of snow and the weather has been in the negatives, finally getting into the single digits yesterday. School was closed for a few days, but is back open and I’m just inside for my runs. Send some of the 40 degrees our way please!

    1. I know- our weather would feel balmy to you! I read your post today and your snow looks insane. Send a little snow our way! The kids were hoping for some flurries but of course we didn’t get any.

  10. Love the gender reveal event! Can’t say we’ve ever done that, but yes, it’s so hard to tell when they are so little! Do you think you are getting closer to determining who will be keeping her? She looks very much like our recent gray cat Zoe.
That Florida weather is crazy! I think it’s funny that you haven’t used your heat in years. But with a blanket and a few cat snuggles you should be all set 🙂

    1. I THINK we will be keeping her! The boyfriend’s father has said no, and I had a talk today with my husband. He said as long as Muffin comes around (which, she will) we can keep Sylvie. Hooray!!!

  11. Awww, Sylvie is a great name for the new kitty!

Glad you’re feeling better from whatever hit you during your long run. I bet it was dehydration related since it was so hot. Congrats on completing 23 miles!

Our friend Chuck (who photo bombed you when you were running) sent us screenshots of your expected temps down there for this weekend and upcoming week. I hope it warms up before we arrive!

  12. So cute to have a gender reveal for Sylvie! I think it’s a nice name for her but I liked Evie too.

I can’t believe you’re gonna have a feels like temp of 17! I don’t think it’s ever felt that cold here, we do get lows into the 30s a handful of times every winter and that’s bad enough. It was almost 80 degrees here yesterday though, so I will probably have to run my A/C again!

  13. It looks like the entire US is getting hit with crazy weather. As much as I detest winter (and that’s putting it kindly), I think I have actually acclimated to the sub-ZERO feels-like conditions. My full moon run actually felt pleasant …and that’s with temps in the teens( but not much wind). Sylvia is a cutie…that’s fun having the gender reveal cupcakes, and letting her sample them 😉

  14. Oooh… Sylvie is a good name for the kitten! What did they say about the age? Was 6 weeks correct? She looks so sweet and calm.
23 miles in hot weather is no joke! Very well done. I’ll have to look at those abs exercises if there’s something that could be useful. It could be a good option for between-days when it’s not appropriate to do cardio (like this week).
I guess with weather, it gets as crazy with rain here as with cold weather in the US. Every other day there’s a weather warming about rain and parts of the country is already under water after heavy rains after Christmas, saturated ground and then storm Chandra.

  15. so you are keeping her.

you are tempting me to get one.

    It has been sooooooo cold.

it’s a struggle to go outside at all.

  16. I thought you were safe from the arctic blast but a feels like temp of 17 is legitimately cold!! Great job with your workouts, especially that long run!

I am in love with your kitty and I did have a feeling she was a girl LOL. Love the cupcake idea for the gender reveal. She looks like my gray kitty, Rosie! 🙂

  17. Oh my gosh! I hope you didn’t have your smoke alarm go off from turning on your heat for the first time in forever!!!

    And Sylvie is so cute!

While we aren’t as cold as other places, we have a humid and damp cold that just gets in your bones. It’s very different than Northern cold, but it’s equally difficult.

We had temps down in the 20s with windchills colder than that. Our irrigation outtake thing froze, and needs to be repaired. Pipes were bursting all over the place and the power in several neighborhoods has been in and out. What times.

  18. Below freezing!! Egads. I sort of hope you get a snowflake or two. Not a real storm or anything, but just a magical moment of snow that will then be gone. Because wouldn’t that be wonderful and memorable and amazing?!

Sylvie! I do hope your husband comes round. Hey, Dr. BB did when it came to getting Zelda!

  19. Jenny!!! A kitty to love and cuddle. How wonderful. I’m so excited for you (I’m going to go ahead and assume your husband will not be able to resist keeping her, especially now that Angie’s BF’s family won’t be taking Sylvie).

We have had a lot of snow and COLD weather, BUT it was supposed to be stormy today and it is not. So I anticipated a snow day and it turns out we have school so that was a Happy Thing.

Enjoy the cooler temps while they last!!!

  20. Sylvie!!!! Such a great name. I love that you did a gender reveal for her, adorable.

The weather shift sounds WILD, Jenny! I imagine it must be very destabilizing! Hopefully the cold snap doesn’t last too long.

  21. My aunt in north Florida sent me a video of snow flurries at her house on Saturday!
The weather has been absolutely insane … my part of NC is not usually this cold, but holy goodness – December was brutal, with a slight break from Christmas-early January, and then it PLUMMETED and has been disgusting.

  22. Wow, am I getting this right; was your 90 degree run the 23 miler!? If so, woof. If not, 23 miles is still hard, even in 30 degree cooler weather! It was about 86 here yesterday and it was too hot for me, but it has clouded over and is supposed to rain for a couple of days, which is not great, but it is cooler! I need to get back into a running routine, but I am really struggling with it right now. I have lost my motivation, and it is hard to start again at 3 or 4 or whatever miles when you used to be able to knock out 20 with no issues. I need to get over myself and just do it! Thanks for the inspiration!

  23. Haha, a gender reveal… you just needed an excuse for cupcakes. Is Sylvie staying with us now after all the trouble you went through with the vet and her name and all?!

Brrr, I hear you, 40s is cold (but I chuckle about the hat and gloves with shorts).
