walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Yoga to the Rescue

Hello!!! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) I had a pretty good week overall- a bit of low back pain, but nothing a little yoga couldn’t cure. Let’s get right into it.

Monday

A 4 mile run that was dark and spooky! Well- not really, but I’m trying to get in the spirit of Halloween.

Tuesday

I started the morning with the Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and hip stability exercises. Later in the day I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back pain. I need to do this every single day!

Wednesday

I had a great long run! I returned to the scene of the crime, aka the park where I DNF’d my long run two weeks ago. The plan was 14 miles- I went 14.5 and felt like I could have kept going. In the middle of the run I felt my SI joint, but that went away and my only complaint at the end was that both hips felt tight.

Later in the day I did yoga for low back pain again.

Thursday

I woke up feeling good- nothing was really sore, so I headed to the gym for leg day. As usual I focused on squats, and I decided to add wall sits to my routine (EGADS- on second thought, maybe I don’t want to do wall sits the day after a long run. Ouch).

Later in the day I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back and hip release. This felt GREAT.

Friday

3 mile run, and I apologize in advance for this photo.

I’m very sorry.

Then I did another Yoga with Adriene video- lower back love. And at night we had a football game!

Look at that cute little sliver of moon.

It was Senior Night, so the band didn’t do their halftime show. It was still fun. This was our last home game until playoffs!

Saturday

4 mile run and… oof. It was like the fatigue from that long run and the squats finally caught up with me. Nothing hurt- I just felt tired.

Legs of lead.

Later in the day, upper body strength, finally. I will NOT end up looking like a T-Rex! That was good, but I didn’t do any yoga, and I missed it.

Sunday

On tap for today- sleeping in! Waffles! And… yoga. WHY is it so hard to fit everything in? I don’t think I ever have a week where I feel like I nailed the running, strength, and yoga. But I need all three, so I’ll continue to try.

How was your week? Are you looking forward to turning the clocks back next week? – I AM!!!

  1. Well you know how I feel about falling back… I won’t hate it as much when I don’t have young kids. We will start to move their bedtimes back by 10 min starting today so they aren’t up at their normal time next Sunday. I would rather have more light in the evening when we are able to enjoy it. I don’t need more morning light with how busy our mornings are. But I recognize that it’s great for runners!

Great work on your week of workouts! I was able to get back to OTF on Friday. I took a treadmill class. Today I will do a traditional class with tread, weights and rowing. I really need to get more strength training back in my life. But winter is usually when that happens for me. I’ve also walked so much this month which is good for me!

    1. Yes, I used to hate changing to clocks when I had little kids! And I still hate turning the clocks ahead, so I really lean into the fall back weekend.
You really can’t go wrong with walking, and yes, winter is a good time to focus on strength. I guess your hand is feeling better? I hope so.

  2. Nice job with the yoga this week! I do yoga maybe once a year, if that, despite how important it is. You’re right- it is so hard to fit it all in! But you did pretty good this week.

    1. I’m realizing that I really need the yoga, so I just have to make the time for it. I can’t even imagine how you would fit it in with all the workouts you do plus the kid duty!

  3. fitting running, mobility/stretching, strength is hard, it requires 1.5-2 hrs a way which we usually don’t have. I try to do all when I’m settled at home, when traveling I focus on 1 or 2. For the next few weeks/months, I’ll focus on strength, hopefully that helps with injury prevention.
I have yet to try yoga with Adriane, sigh.

    1. I think strength will definitely help with injury prevention. If I had to give up one thing of the three I would give up yoga- but of course that’s what I’ve been doing and it led to low back pain, sigh.
I’ll warn you that the yoga with Adriene videos- at least the ones I’ve been doing- are very slow moving. It’s not power yoga! But it’s definitely what I need right now.

  4. It is a challenge to fit everything in! Strength, mobility and stretching takes a lot of time! Great effort this week to make it happen. Sounds like you are feeling pretty good!

    1. Thanks Deborah- I’m definitely feeling good for the most part. Of course my body is always complaining about something, ha ha.

  5. I never tried to fit it all in until the pandemic shut down, but now that I am going into the office most days I really have to reset my expectations. I want it all every day!

I’m about to use up my yoga class pack and am on the fence about signing up again. I never regret going, but I rarely want to go — it takes such a chunk out of my morning since its a 25 min drive.

Glad you are feeling pretty good this week!

    1. Thanks Coco! I DEFINITELY wouldn’t do yoga if I had to drive 25 minutes to get there. I mean I can barely fit it in when I’m just doing a video at home, lol.

  6. As we yoga girls used to say, Yoga Every Damn Day. It makes life better! Even one minute of yoga is better than zero minutes of yoga.
I don’t like when time changes one way or the other. Just pick a damn time and stay with it. This time change means that in a month, the sun will be setting when we are in the 3’s. THE SUN WILL SET BEFORE 4 PM SO NO I DO NOT ENJOY TIME CHANGE. In Calgary, at least the time change meant that sun was setting after four, even if it didn’t rise until 8:45 am.

    1. ACK! Okay. If the time change meant that the sun starts setting at 3, I would hate it too. Luckily I am much closer to the equator so it’s not as extreme for us.
Yoga Every Damn Day is going to be my new motto!

  7. Jenny, I like the picture of you running that you’re apologizing for – it fits in with the season! Yay for feeling good after your long run and LOL on not loving wall sits the following day. Good for you for adding more yoga into your routine. It feeling so good is a sign that it’s the right thing to be doing.

    1. Ha, I guess that photo was definitely spooky! I had my flash on and everything- why was it so dark? And you’re right- everything felt good on that long run, which means yoga is what I need right now.

  8. Although I did more stretching, etc. than usual this week, I know I definitely need much more devoted time for that…but I’m just not sure when I’ll fit it in, LOL. I know, that’s a LAME excuse, but it’s really tough to make time for something that is (typically) very boring for me. First world probs! Huge kudos for making it a priority in your routine 😉

    1. I know Kim!!! Stretching is so boring. The yoga I’m doing is basically a lot of stretching, but somehow it’s less boring because I’m following a video. It really is hard to fit it all in.

  9. You always seem like to getit all done… strength training and running.

    Yes and no.

Will love the extra light in the morning but it is getting colder. Will hate the darkness at 4:30 pm if I run then.

    1. Well, yes… I guess if it were going to get really cold here, I wouldn’t like it getting dark that early. But- I really need the daylight in the early morning more. It feels kind of cozy when it’s dark by dinnertime.

  10. Hee hee — I like your spectral nighttime running photo!

It does feel impossible to get “everything” in, doesn’t it? Even if our “everythings” are different. I think you are doing pretty darn great, but I know what you mean.

I am okay with the time change — at least, THIS time change. I am going to try to wake up at the same time I do now; I’m hoping Leo will help me stick to it. And I’m going to figure out how to exercise before the day begins.

    1. Yes, I like THIS time change. I will be grumbling incessantly when we have to change the clocks ahead, ha. If you can use this time change to get up an hour earlier, more power to you.

  11. You had a great week of runs and workouts, but I agree — it’s tough to fit it all in with work, family and other obligations! I’ve been doing yoga at least once weekly on my rest day, which is usually Sunday, but this week it’s gonna be Monday because I just paced a friend to his 100K finish at Javelina Jundred overnight and now I need a day off running to catch up on the sleep I missed!

We don’t change clocks here in AZ but our sunrises are gradually getting later and sunsets getting earlier, but fortunately it still doesn’t get dark until around 6 pm.

  12. Yoga with Adriene has made SUCH a difference for my back pain. I do it every day, and it has really, really helped. I’m glad it is useful for you too!

  13. Yes, why is it so hard to fit it all in??? Oh well.

I’m looking forward to the time change…next spring. I can’t lie, I am not looking forward to “walk the dog in the pitch black” season. Oh well to that also.

  14. I hear you, Jenny. It’s hard to fit it all in, but good for you for trying and for getting back to yoga (because it sure is good for our flexibility and mobility!) Great job on the long run. I haven’t run more than 8 miles in months!

  15. My Si joint has been talking to me these past couple of weeks-I think it’s due to the uneven surfaces on the trails. I’ve been doing Adriene’s lower back workouts, and she also has one for pelvic health, which helps as well. She’s a gift!!

I’m glad you got that long run done! It had to feel good.

  16. My week was good. I’m happy to still be able to workout outside -either walking or running. I’ll miss that option when it gets too cold. I’ve got a throbbing pain in my left foot that comes and goes. I wonder if it’s due to arthritis, which to date has only impacted a few of my fingers.
