walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Embracing the Heat

Hi there! As always, I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown (thanks, ladies!) This week I had some surprising runs, continued with the Caroline Girvan Iron Series, and discovered a new (to me) yoga routine. Let’s get into it!

Sunday

The first thing I did when I got up was an Iron Series workout- Day #19, full body. Later in the day I walked for one hour while I talked to my son on the phone!

Monday

In the morning I did Adriene’s yoga for psoas. There’s still something wonky with my psoas/knee on the left side, and I’m hoping yoga will cure it.

I had a run scheduled for later in the day. It was 90 degrees, but I just didn’t feel like going to the gym and getting on the treadmill. So I decided to run outside… and it wasn’t that bad! I mean, it was hot, but it didn’t bother me that much. WHO AM I???

Four hot but happy miles.

I returned home extremely sweaty, chugged ice water with LMNT, and actually felt pretty great. I have no idea what’s going on, but I like it.

Tuesday

In the morning I did Iron Series Day #20, arms and core. The funny thing is, I remember this one from last time I did this series, and thought I liked it.

WAS I INSANE??? This was terrible! I almost killed myself during the plank sequence. Lots of great tricep work though, which I obviously need.

Later in the day I thought, “yesterday’s run went so well- why don’t I try it again?” HA. I started off, and it was very overcast…

Cue ominous music…

About a mile in, it started to rain. AND, I felt some weird twinges in my right calf. Nothing terrible, but I’m very sensitive/paranoid about calf pain, because I’ve had issues in the past. A mile later, the rain had turned into a downpour and I could hear thunder. Everything conspired to end this run at 3 miles.

Wednesday

In the middle of the night, I got up to go to the bathroom. I could feel the left psoas, the calf, and a strained muscle in my side (thanks a lot, planks) and I thought, maybe it’s time for a day off!

I pulled up a “deep stretch” Adriene video. It was 45 minutes, as opposed to the 15-20 minute yoga routines I usually do. I really liked it! Need to do this one more often.

Thursday

In the morning I did yoga for psoas. Later in the day I had another hot 4 mile run. Again, I felt great! One little twinge in my calf but it was otherwise okay.

Friday

In the morning- yoga for lower back pain. Later in the day, Iron Series Day #21. This was supersets of lunges and step ups. I haven’t done step ups in years, and this was a good way to get back into them. The lunges were weighted, but the step ups were bodyweight only. Very challenging workout!

Saturday

Oh boy. I feel those step ups in my glutes! I worked in the morning, came home and napped, and headed to the gym in the late afternoon. I’ve discovered this is one of the least crowded times to hit the gym.

I had Iron Series Day #22 on tap, chest and back. This was my first time doing one of these workouts at the gym, and it worked great! I had all my stuff set up, put my earbuds in and played the workout on my phone.

My cozy corner.

THEN, I got on the treadmill for a run! 3 miles and I threw in some faster intervals. And then I ended with core. I really enjoyed this- I wish the gym were this empty all the time.

Sunday

Hmm. Next up in the Iron Series is glutes and hamstrings, but my glutes are still pretty sore from those step ups, so we’ll see. I might just do Adriene’s deep stretch video again.

How was your week?

Is it hot where you are? It’s full-on summer here.

Summer Planning Part 1

I always love The Girl Next Door annual episode where they design their summers. I just like the thought of “designing”

  1. It’s temporary summer this weekend- 80’s and humid. It should cool down in a couple days. I just need the nights to cool down enough so we can keep the house comfortable.

    1. Cool nights are nice- we won’t have that here till October or November! It’s in the mid-upper 70s at night and very humid- so the AC will be on until winter. Sigh.

  2. I love that Adriene deep stretch video! I don’t often have time to do it, but when I do…ahhhhh…. I hope your tight muscles loosen up! And I’m not surprised that you’re feeling fit–it’s all that reserved fitness from your 50 miler and the training you did for it. Enjoy!

It’s tropical here right now–I walked out of work yesterday, and I thought I was in Florida–the air even had that smell to it. I like the warm weather, I do, but not the humidity…

    1. I KNOW. I’ll take the heat, but I wish we could get rid of the humidity. Oh well. And yes, it’s hard to find the 45 minutes for a yoga video, but I’d like to do it a couple times a week.

  3. Sounds like good week. Sometimes I re-take a Peloton class I bookmarked because I like it, and end up un-bookmarking it because, what was I thinking???

Were you close to home when you got caught in that storm?

It must have been nice to have the gym to yourself!

    1. Ha ha, un-bookmarking it… yes, I was wondering why in the world I enjoyed that workout last time???!!!
I didn’t exactly have the gym to myself, but it was about 1/4 as full as it usually is. I loved it.

    2. It has been in the 50s here … and then today it is 80! It jumped 30ish degrees over night. Which i love for everything BUT running. Hope those calf twinges stay away!

  4. We’re having a toasty spell right now, but the humidity hasn’t kicked in yet, so things feel very pleasant.

Step ups FTW! I think I remember that Iron workout. Note to self that I need to do step ups more often.

    1. Yes, I need to do step ups more often. I think that’s the main thing I’ll take away from the Iron Series- there are a lot more ways to work out than I’ve been doing. It’s expanding my horizons!

  5. I need to get back to some stretching myself! Add to list! We are about to have a heat wave up here-not quite ready for full on summer yet but here it comes. Hope you continue to heal and feel better this week

  6. Question – what do you use for your step ups? Do you use a chair? That seems great to me, but also really high…which is probably why you are more sore than I am, because I do a lot of modifying with my CG workouts. I’m paranoid about injuring myself, which means I don’t end up pushing myself as much as I should.

Was it humid on your hot runs? That seems like it would make a big difference.

Yesterday was supposed to be weights/yoga/walk, but I only took a walk. At least I did that, I guess.

  7. Great question. I was also paranoid about injuring myself with the step ups since I haven’t done them in so long, so I was afraid to go too high. I ended up piling up a bunch of large books (think old yearbooks, that size) and making a step high enough, but not as high as a chair. But it went well, so next time I’d like to do this workout at the gym and use a bench.
Yes, it was humid! Which makes it extra crazy that the heat didn’t bother me.

  8. Is it hot where I am? Um, yes! We are in the low 90s here which is just a warmup for real summer. I did my first “escape the heat” run of the season yesterday where I drive an hour up to the mountains. It was a little breezy and temps were in the low 70s which felt really nice.

I’m impressed you ran and felt good in the afternoon with temps so high, and I’m assuming high humidity! I’m sad that I missed out on our prime afternoon running season — even though I prefer getting my runs done first thing, it’s nice to go after work sometimes too.

    1. Yes, low 90s is “cool” for summer temps in AZ. I don’t know what is up, usually the heat makes me angry and miserable. Maybe I’ll be able to tolerate it a little better this summer? You’re lucky you can escape it by driving up into the mountains. I’m envious.

  9. How wonderful with full on summer! Meanwhile, we have 12C (53F) and rain. IN MAY. Well, what can we do.
Well done with your strength workouts. Step-ups are such a good exercise! They make me realise that my legs are so unbalanced in strength. I always feel wobblier on the right leg. Maybe because I’ve been focusing on balance with the left leg so much.
I must admit I got some hiccups when you said to J that you use books for step-ups at home! I’d be terrified! Don’t they just slide apart??
I’ve had a good week in the gym and otherwise but didn’t post to the rundown this week, my head has been so full and I still have my writing block going on (and yes, I know I won’t just get over it and that I have to actually write!).

    1. That’s why I was specifying that these are nice, big books- like big and wide. Still I agree it’s not ideal. The other thing is, in this workout you’re always keeping the top foot on the book, and just lowering up and down (does that make sense?) So I felt like it was stable enough. Next time I’ll do them at the gym though so I can use a bench.
Yes I noticed you didn’t post to the rundown! May seems to be a month for writers block- lots of people are feeling it.

  10. We got a true taste of summer here this weekend! The temps weren’t too warm, but the humidity was messing with my hair, LOL. Looks like a decent week of fitness for you!

  11. I know it gets hot near you. Do you ever get used to it?
It has been in the 50s here … and then today it is 80! It jumped 30ish degrees over night. Which i love for everything BUT running. Hope those calf twinges stay away!

    1. Yes, the only time you don’t want it to jump from 50 to 80 is on race day. To answer your question… I do get acclimated to the heat, somewhat. By September I’m usually so over it though, and it makes me angry. And it doesn’t really cool down till November. Arg.

  12. Sounds like a solid week, Jenny, while paying attention to your body’s cues! It’s been getting warmer here, although we’ve been having a nice breeze to keep things comfortable for now. The heat will arrive here sooner than later though.
