Oh, hello! I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown. It was a good week, but nothing exciting. Since I ramped up the distance of my longest run the last three weeks, this week was a cutback with no long run. But there were still workouts, and lots of dark, blurry running photos! Let’s get into it…
Monday
I started the week with a 3 mile run. Seriously. I CANNOT WAIT to turn the clocks back!!! One more week!
I followed this run with the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout.
Tuesday
Since I wasn’t doing a long run on Wednesday, I went to the gym for leg day (might as well get it over with! Wait- do I have a bad attitude?) I started with hip stability exercises, then moved on to squats, deadlifts, and of course abs, as always.
Wednesday
5 mile run on the cross country trail. It was nice to start and end a run in the daylight for a change!
I spent the rest of the day doing errands, including…
Thursday
Strength workout at home. I did my hip stability exercises, this MadFit standing core workout, and… skater squats. Last week Susanne posted a video of them, so I tried it. I could do them! I didn’t look, ahem, exactly like the guy in the video, but I could come pretty close.
Friday
Oof. 3 mile run, and everything was great except that my headlamp (which I wear around my chest) died in the middle of it. Look how dark it was! (I took this photo under a lone street lamp.) I could barely see where my feet were landing, and it wasn’t good.
I returned home intact and did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout.
Saturday
Headlamp has been charged! A 4 mile run before work, and I worked on my cadence. I have a metronome app on my phone, and I can comfortably run at 58. Three steps for every beat of the metronome=174 steps per minute. Ideally it should be closer to 180. The faster your legs turn over, the less time you have to make extraneous movements that slow you down and lead to injuries. I’ll keep working on it!
Later on I watched Baylor win! We’re looking good, and still have a chance to salvage our season. I also watched a little of the World Series, but… meh. I was rooting for the Mets.
Sunday
On tap for today, my favorite Sunday activities: sleeping in, waffles (possibly) and football! Sundays always start off so gloriously, but then end with laundry, cleaning, and an early bedtime. Sigh.
How was your week? Do you like turning the clocks back?
Have you voted yet?

I do not like turning back the clocks because it is dark so early! I’d rather have more light after work instead of in the morning. I used to love turning back the clocks when I was young because it meant an extra hour of sleep. Now it’s an extra hour of parenting. Ha. We push the boys’ bedtimes back by 10 min/day leading up to the time change so they sleep later on the day of the time change.
Nice work on your workouts! I ran twice and did a lower body workout in my hotel room last week. My ‘long’ run was 5 miles which went well. I plan to run 3 miles this morning when Phil is up for the day and then 3 again tomorrow. I usually don’t run 3 days in a row but since my strength training options are limited due to my stupid flare I am leaning into running right now.
The Vikings played on Thursday and lost. Womp womp. Our season was going so well but we lost the last 2 games. 🙁
Yes, I knew the Vikings lost. I usually root for them.
And yes- I can see how an extra hour of parenting isn’t that appealing. It really is all about your perspective! I’m looking forward to an extra hour of sleep, and not having to drive my daughter to school in the pitch dark. I know it’ll be dark earlier, but I don’t mind that.
Ok, fine, since I can’t have light in both the morning and evening I guess we’ll switch it up to light in the AM. Dog walking in the dark is challenging no matter what, but extra so now that we have a black dog. We have street lights in my neighborhood, but they’re very dim.
I’ve been alternating 30/12/3 with running and it’s going well. Yesterday I went out to a state park and did some really challenging hikes/leaf peeps. The trail was so steep at one point that there was a ladder to get up the trail. I’ve never seen anything like that before! I’m a bit sore this morning but I feel like I have another hike in me, so that might happen today.
A LADDER? I’ve never seen that before! That is a steep trail. It sounds REALLY fun though. Glad you have all these cardio options!
I usually vote in Election Day. Although in ny I think early voting starts today.
No no. I hate to run in the dark. And I usually run after work when it’s warmer. All ready 30s in the am.
Glad you had a drama free week.
Okay, if you run after work then you won’t be liking the time change! But, it’ll give you an extra hour of sleep the night before your marathon : )
Well, Jim and I were glued to the game Friday night (more so he then I given he’s been a lifelong Dodgers fan). Wow, that grand slam was pretty surreal! I’m neutral on the time change because after a few weeks it’s dark again, LOL.
Yes, if you’re a Dodgers fan you’re pretty happy right now!
And, great point- it’ll be light in the mornings for a while but will slowly (or, quickly) get darker and darker. But just think how late the sun would rise if we didn’t turn the clocks back!
I have tried that metronome app before and it drove me crazy! I could never get to 180! I like the lighter mornings but not getting dark at 5-oh well! Will have to try that dead bug workout one of these days. I like a no drama week 🙂
Yes, I’ve used the metronome before and always given up. The idea is to start where you are, and GRADUALLY move it up. I’ll report back if I can actually get to 180 this time.
Speaking of leg days… I did legs on Thursday, for the first time in over 3 weeks. (I was in Nashville and no time to exercise, then home for a week but was SO insanely busy I ended up just giving myself a pass on formal exercise besides walking Charlie, and then in Mexico for a week where I also couldn’t exercise!) So this week I got back to it with cardio on Monday and Wednesday, upper body at gym on Tuesday and Saturday, and legs Thursday and (supposed) to be today. Omg. After Thursday I was soooooo sore (still am!). It’s crazy! Especially because when I lift regularly I really never get sore at all. But Friday-Saturday I was literally in “can’t sit on the toilet” mode. Ha… ouch!! I told my husband, this is why I can’t take time off from the gym! As long as I do it consistently I never have this problem… seems nuts that after just a few weeks off my muscles seemed to forget how to lift heavy things, but they did. Oh well!
YES KAE I KNOW. If you just take a little time off, you’re SOOOOO sore when you go back to it. Especially legs. There’s nothing else like that “special” soreness after leg day (when you’ve taken time off from it.). It’s great motivation not to skip workouts!
I’m so happy to hear you got that Baylor win!
I always think your weights look so impressive for 10 lbs :)…
And you are a fit-inspiration as always!!
Ha, I LOVE the big ten pound plates, they make me look like a badass (until you get close up and can see the “10”, ha ha.) I did have two plates on each side though! Soon I’ll move up to the huge 25 pounders, ha.
Glad your week was drama free! If I had my way, we’d stay on DLST all year round. I love my peaceful walks/runs in the early morning in the dark and dislike it getting dark early in the evening.
On no you don’t! If we’re going to stop changing the clocks, I want to stay OFF DLST. But we’ll probably keep switching them back and forth forever.
Yay for a low drama week. I was hoping we changed our clocks this weekend because I am over the dark mornings! I am lucky enough that my neighborhood is pretty well lit so I can manage without my headlamp if I forget it — like I did yesterday.
Some areas I run are better lit than others. My actual neighborhood only has streetlights on the corners, and that leaves the places in between so dark.
I hate the time change, though typically springing forward kicks my butt harder than falling back. I don’t like feeling like night has set in so early, though the effect isn’t as bad in Florida as it was in Massachusetts. I once worked with a woman who said of it being darker earlier that she liked it because, even though it was dark early, that made her feel like she still had so much of the evening left. I could not wrap my head around that one.
Ha, weeeeell… that’s some convoluted logic, but I think I get it. It is true that here in Florida we don’t get dark as early as they do up north. I definitely DON’T like springing ahead!
Europe turned the clocks back last night! South Africa doesn’t change so now I always have to go through the time math when I make a phone call to Switzerland.
I like that idea of the metronome! What kind of running watch do you have? Most Garmins tracks the cadence. I just checked the cadence of today’s run, it was at 175, almost identical to yours.
I have a Garmin but it’s an older (and cheaper) one so I’m not even sure if it tracks the cadence.
There are some states in the US that don’t change the clocks- seems like it would be confusing to keep track of which time zone you’re in.
Yay for skater squats! Thanks for reminding me of them. The gym is closed tomorrow so I’ll need to do something at home instead. Skater squats will be perfect!
I would find it scary to run alone in the dark in the US! Maybe I’m just exaggerating risks, with “info” I’ve learned from movies?
We turned our clocks back last night. Some light in the early morning, at least for a while (because we deteriorate quite fast into winter) will be nice. I thought you turned your clocks earlier in the US! Some people really have a problem with the turning of the clocks but I really don’t mind.
Good work with the cadence! I’ve heard there are certain songs people listen to, that have the perfect speed for the optimal cadence.
We used to turn the clocks back earlier (in the good old days) but somewhere along the way it became the first Sunday after Halloween- I think it’s too late.
Running in the dark… I think it depends on where you live. I usually feel pretty safe, but it’s true that anything could happen any time. I do see a few other people out running or walking their dogs- I wish it were more.
Skater squats are definitely effective if you can’t get to the gym!
sounds like a chill week of run and gym. back to normal 🙂
I haven’t had to change clock for 7 years. I remember not liking those adjustments when I was in the US especially when girls were babies.
Oh, changing the clocks is TERRIBLE when you have little kids! I remember those days.
We don’t change the clocks here in Arizona, but we are slowly losing daylight as well, with the sunrise now around 6:45 and sunset at 5:45! I usually start my runs between 6:30 and 7 am on weekdays and have only needed to use my waist light once so far this season when I started before 6 am but soon it’ll be dark for part of my morning runs. I kind of like that because I can enjoy the sunrise from the trails, but it sucks to have shorter days overall.
I guess there’s no escape from the shorter days, whether you turn the clocks back or not. Seeing the sunrise on the trails sounds pretty nice though.
I hate the time changes. HATE THEM. It throws off my sleep, and it’s such a nuisance. That said, I prefer for it to be lighter in the morning so this is my preferred one.
I haven’t voted in the American election (not being American and all), but I did vote a few weeks ago for our town’s mayoral race + town councillors. It was all online which was AMAZING. It voted in literally less than a minute.
Huh! Online voting. I wonder if that would work here- people are so suspicious nowadays. And- I don’t like turning the clocks ahead, but I do like turning them back. It does get easier the older your kids get.
I am looking forward to more light in the morning. I am not a fan of running in the dark.
I did vote by mail. I’m a wreck about this election!
Wendy, so am I. I was okay until this week, now it’s so close and I can’t stop thinking about it.
I’ll run outside in the dark until November, but after that I’m fine with running inside! We do need to replace our treadmill deck, so that will be happening soon. It has a crack in it.
I’ll be voting in person. I think it’s going to be very busy at our location!
I know, I shouldn’t complain- at least I don’t have to run outside in the dark AND cold. I wouldn’t like that!
In our part of Australia we don’t change our time, which means from now in October until February it is fully light by 5am! Which is a bit much! Lucky I’m a morning person.
Yay for a drama free week! And nice one voting early. In Australia voting is compulsory or you get fined! (Even for local council elections!). We actually just voted in our state election this weekend. Slightly lower stakes than the US election though. Ha.
Well that’s interesting!!! First that it’s light by 5 am- I agree that’s a BIT much. I don’t think I want it light quite that early. Also- voting is compulsory??? I wonder how different things would be here if that were the case. For all the frenzy over our elections lately, there are still a lot of people who don’t vote.
I’ll be voting on Election Day, although since I’ve been sick I’ve been thinking about what would happen if I broke my leg or something on Election Day before I got to the polls. Hmmm…
The time change will do nothing to benefit me at all. It will still be dark for both my morning and evening walk with poor Hannah. BUT! An extra hour sleep never hurt me.
Our clocks went back this weekend, good for morning runners like me, but it was SO dark when I went out with running club last night, and I was worried about falling, then very nearly did so came home again! Good work this week.
We changed the clock a week before the U.S., which means for one week, I was only 5 hours ahead of my midwestern family! But back to 6 after this weekend. It’s dark here after work right now and the parks are not well lit! I tried to run after work and won’t do that again for a bit.
Sounds like a nice well balanced week of strength and running, well done!
