walkers walk… but runners fly

Ringing in the New Year

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. Today’s topic- How are you ringing in the new year?

I do have some plans! They may be… unconventional, shall we say? To start with, my husband always works on New Year’s Eve (in addition to teaching music at a private school, he also still plays the trumpet professionally). He always plays for a New Year’s Eve party, and won’t be home until after 1 am.

My son left yesterday to go see his girlfriend. Boo hoo! But- I’m happy for him, as they will have a much more fun New Year’s than he would if he were here. My daughter will be with friends. So it will just be me! And, I’m fine with that.

In the morning of New Year’s Eve, I have a 22 mile run planned. I’m excited that the weather is finally cooperating!

Ooh! Look at Wednesday!

I’m going to drive to a trail I don’t usually run on, and I’m planning to enjoy this beautiful morning. THEN, I plan to enjoy lounging on the couch for the afternoon, reading and taking a well-deserved nap.

At night I’ll watch the Cotton Bowl and do more reading- I’ll get takeout for dinner with a big Coke Zero. Yep- I really know how to live it up! Honestly… I’m looking forward to it.

What are your plans for New Year’s? Could they possibly be as exciting as mine?

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. Like you, I have nothing exciting planned for NYD–there will be run in there and then who knows? I wish our weather was going to be as welcoming as yours!

  2. Your new years plans sound great! I am not a fan of NYE. It is so overhyped IMO! I like a house party but I haven’t been to one in so long and loathed being in a bar at midnight. We will have a quiet day. I am off work and Paul doesn’t have childcare so we will find an adventure of sorts – maybe sledding at a new location or going to the science museum? Phil is working and will have a lot to do so it will be just us 2 during the day. That night we plan to get pizza and will watch a movie. That’s kind of it! I’m off with him on NYD and once again Phil will probably have to work although hopefully he won’t have to go into the office. So we will come up with another adventure of sorts.

I bet it was sad to say good bye to Paul!

    1. Sigh- it was sad! But, onward. Your day sounds super fun, as a matter of fact I’m envious. I wish I could have another day with my Paul when he was little. I hope Phil doesn’t have to work on NYD and you can all relax!

  3. our link up opens in 3 days??

Going out to dinner with family on NYE.

Have a race the next day but it’s at noon…. and it’s a free local one.

Very jealous of your weather… snow, ice and WIND!!! Boo!

    1. I know Darlene- I never get the linkups right. I need to confer with Jenn so I can fix that!!!
And, this is one of the times that I’m HAPPY I don’t live anywhere else! Our weather will be perfect.
Enjoy your race- it sounds fun.

  4. We don’t have any plans for New Year’s Eve. We are not partiers. Sometimes I feel lame, but mostly I just want to be home in my jammies.

Our church has a board games/snacks evening so there’s a chance we’ll go to that??

I think your day home alone sounds wonderful and my idea of the PERFECT way to ring in the new year (#Introvert). Like Darlene, I’m jealous of your weather. We’re having freezing rain and freezing temps. I am never jealous of your summer weather, but in the winter… I wish I lived in Florida!

    1. The ideal scenario would be to live in Florida December- March, then back to Nova Scotia.
Home in my pajamas is my dream evening!

  5. Happy New Year, Jenny! I have a lunch out with one of my girlfriends, and then it will be a cosy evening in for me. I have a bottle of sparkling wine with my name on it! And of course I will watch the greatest movie of all time, When Harry Met Sally. I’m not sure if I’ll watch it on New Year’s Eve or not, but it’s coming up in the next couple of days, bet on it.

  6. You are totally invited over to our house (I’m serious — Josh is on call, and I am making a charcuterie board but have no other grand plans and could definitely procure some vegan ingredients) if you want to get on the road with possibly less sober drivers AND you don’t care if I can’t actually make it until midnight but the kids probably will! But I also totally understand the appeal of a chill NYE at home too!

    1. Sarah, it’s tempting!!! It would be really fun. If I could be magically transported there and then transported back to my bed I would probably do it- as it is, I think I’ll continue with my couch sloth plans. But we should do it another time!

  7. Happy almost NYE! 22 miles is a great way to see the old year out.

Our norm has been to stay home on NYE, but for the second year in a row we got invited over to a friends’ house. I’m excited to see them, less excited about staying up until after midnight.

    1. Ha, I might not make it till midnight. But if I am asleep at midnight I’ll be rudely awoken by all the fireworks in our neighborhood, so I won’t miss the New Year (ahem- grr.) I hope you have fun!

  8. I’ll be in bed by ten, but the church bells will go CRAZY at midnight and I’ll wake up in a panic.

Aren’t you sad you aren’t staying with us over New Year’s Eve?

    1. Hahahaha. In our neighborhood there will be tons of fireworks at midnight! I think church bells are less panic-inducing than fireworks.

  9. Your plans for NYE sound just perfect! I usually stay home on New Years Eve and just watch the CNN coverage but I always stay up past midnight — it’s hard to go to sleep any earlier because the people in my parents’ neighborhood set off loud fireworks all night!

New Years Day will hopefully be chill too. I’m planning on taking a rest day that day since everyone is out on the trails for NYD hikes and it just gets annoying! But my sister will be over so hopefully we can play some board games and enjoy appetizers!

    1. That sounds fun! I’m also having a chill New Year’s Day. And yes, we have tons of fireworks as well, so there’s not much point going to bed early.

  10. I love that you’re embracing ringing int he new year by yourself – did you wish to do it differently? Maybe. But why not make it a “Jenny-night!” Have the best start into 2026!

  11. Absolutely as exciting as yours, but about 10-15 degrees cooler! I am in soft pants on the couch with the pugs, with the game on. mr PugRunner is watching, but he’ll probably head out to a friends’ house soon.

    Happy New Year!

  12. LOL I made soup for dinner and fell asleep watching football — although I did wake up at 11:45 for the ball drop.
    Happy New Year!

  13. Your NYE sounded PERFECT. Some friends had a party but I ended up spending the day with my mom to keep her company. We played some games and watched SO many episodes of The Celebrity Traitors UK, haha. It was a good time!
