walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Big Emotions

Well, it’s been quite a week. Lots of emotions! We traveled to Texas for our son’s graduation, but there were still some workouts sprinkled in there. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Here we go..

Sunday

Oops. This was supposed to be a gym day, but as the day went on, neither my daughter or I felt like going (note to self- this is why you work out IN THE MORNING). I ended up doing the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, and then had a 45 minute walk.

Why do I look all weird and hunched over? Ugh, walking…

Monday

Following in the theme of the week (which turned out to be “No Gym Days”) I did an upper body strength workout at home, and hip stability exercises.

Tuesday

I ran, for the first time since my race! It… didn’t feel great. My left hamstring is still nagging at me. I did intervals of one minute running and one minute walking, for 3 miles.

Hooray!!! Running.

After work I went back to the chiropractor, and I’ll admit I was a little down that my hamstring still ached. I subtly implied that maybe his treatments weren’t working, and HE had the nerve to imply that maybe it was because I ran a 50 mile race when it was already hurting. Hrumph. Whatever.

Wednesday

I started the day with some exercises I know have helped hamstring issues in the past- Runners Touch, and side planks with a leg lift. Then, another exciting 45 minute walk.

Thursday

Looong day with no exercise. I got up, packed, worked for a few hours, and then we left for the airport!

Blasting off to Texas!

We flew Miami (ugh) to Austin.  Then, we had to drive 90 minutes from Austin to Waco. WHEW. We made it!

Friday

Graduation Day! My husband and I started with a 3 mile run near our AirBnb… and by that I mean 1 minute run/walk intervals. Shut up, hamstring, I’m not listening. I REALLY needed this after all the sitting yesterday. I also did some planking (including side planks with leg lifts, my new favorite exercise).

Not in Florida!

Then…

Paul is now a Baylor alumnus!

Oh, you know I have more to say about graduation! Details coming soon.

Saturday

You know what? For all my complaints about walking, I’m so grateful I can walk. This was another long day, starting with meeting Paul for an early breakfast. Then, it was time to travel back to Florida! At one point my husband said, “Can you imagine how hard this would be if we couldn’t walk very well?” Yes- we’re lucky. No exercise today, other than a lot of airport steps.

Sunday

It was… a week, and I’m pretty wiped out emotionally. But after all that sitting, I feel like I need to run 20 miles, lift weights, and do an hour of yoga. Obviously most of those things won’t be happening- but there will be a trip to the gym.

How was your week?

Do you get emotional at graduations? – Er… yes, I do.

We’re Going To Waco!

Woohoo! The big week is finally here- on Thursday we’re going to Waco for my son’s graduation. This is unusual

  1. YAY for graduation day! Your outfit was absolutely perfect – I love it, Jenny!
Major kudos for all the traveling, too. Your husband’s point about how tough it’d be without good walking fitness hits home. I feel it every time I’m lugging heavy suitcases up and down airport and train station stairs. Honestly, if we weren’t into fitness, travel would be a total nightmare!

    1. Thanks Catrina! And yes- it’s something I usually take for granted, but shouldn’t. And I’ve been the one who couldn’t walk very well (when I sprained my ankle) so I know how hard it is.

  2. I get emotional with kids every milestone. It’s such a beautiful moment, proud parents, sad parents, practicing art of letting go.
    Congrats!

  3. Lovely to see the happy graduation picture, well done all of you! I have had an OK week, a weird physio call as she was a bit cross I hadn’t emailed her after a week to say I couldn’t manage my new exercises, but I didn’t think I was allowed to email her in between. Anyway, she gave me some new exercises and I completed a Sled Push in the gym this morning, which was very exciting!

    1. Thanks Liz! And, the sled push! That is a GREAT exercise! I was doing that for a while at my old gym. They do have a sled at my new gym but I haven’t used it (yet.)

  4. You look great in the outfit! And congratulations to your son- quite the achievement! I hope his transition to the cold Chicago winters doesn’t shock his system too much after 4 years of Waco!
I’m usually not emotional at graduations – I’m happy for my kid but then for it to be over. I’m usually thinking of logistics and how to get out of the crowd. No brain room for sentimentality! ( or I’m just a grumpy sourpuss, take your pick!)

    1. Ha ha… well there are a lot of logistics involved, I’ll give you that. And this was a LONG ceremony.
Thank you for your kind words- my son is looking forward to having four real seasons- I’ll be interested to hear what he thinks of the Chicago winters.

  5. Congrats to your son. And you looked great.

I was wiped after my 8 mile run yesterday. Humidity. Ugh.

    I can’t imagine how I’d feel after 50 miles.

Be patient. You’ll be back soon.

Yes. At least we can walk.

  6. Congratulations to your son! Definitely a day/season for big emotions.

BTW your graduation outfit looks great!

LOL on the “argument” with your chiro. Side planks with leg lifts are always a challenge for me, even when I try to do them regulalry.

    1. Thank you Coco! And yes- side planks with leg lifts are SO hard. I can do them much better on the right side than the left, hmm what’s up with that? Obviously I have some strength imbalances.

  7. I love your outfit!! Skorts are so cute! I have some casual ones but should get one that look nicer for evenings out in the summer. Congrats to Paul! I do get emotional at graduations! Pomp and circumstance can often make me tear up and I am NOT a crying! It takes a lot of work to get to graduation so it makes me emotional.

My workouts for the week were so so. I was in the office M/T and then traveled W-F. But I did a treadmill workout at the hotel gym on Friday. I planned to run yesterday but the feels like temp was 33!! Our weather is just ridiculous. We went from 90 to freezing in a week. Gah. So I did a CG lower body workout instead and will run this morning once Phil is up. Next week I travel M-Th but am hoping to get a couple of workouts in.

Can’t wait to hear more about the graduation!!

    1. Thank you Lisa! Your weather is crazy, but at least you didn’t get a dust storm!!! My sister got it (near Chicago) and she said she’s never seen anything like it. I certainly hope your weather warms up this week (well- a little. Not to 90 degrees!)

  8. Congrats to your son! You have every right to be very proud. I agree with Catrina, I love the outfit you wore to your son’s graduation – that is totally my style, too.

I’m sorry to hear that your hamstring is still bothering you. 🙁

  9. We’ll see if I get emotional at graduation very soon, since that’s what’s on the docket for this coming Friday! I think that college graduation is going to hit differently than high school, so we’ll compare notes in 2 years.

Your graduation outfit is a 10/10!

Your hamstring might be hurting but YOU RAN 50 MILES!!! Now you just have to sort through all of the puzzle pieces and figure out what will make it happy again. It’s going to be annoying, but you know your body and you will get your hamstring back in line. And then you can tell your chiropractor a few things.

I have been living the dream in CA this week. I did my little run/walks when I was in Sacramento, but since I got to SF I’ve been walking everywhere, so that kind of takes care of that. I think I’m going to figure out a bus ride for today because I’m ready to be off my feet for a while.

    1. I CANNOT WAIT to hear about this trip of yours! And, thank you as usual for all your kind, wise words. Maybe when you retire from your job you should be a therapist or a motivational speaker- you always know the perfect thing to say.

  10. Okay, FIRST OF ALL THAT OUTFIT LOOKS AMAZING. Am I yelling? Yes. Why? I don’t know. But it does, I knew the cream would be perfect with that skirt! It looks fabulous on you.
That’s a very emotional time! It feels like Paul JUST started at Baylor! Time is so funny, isn’t it?
When Rob and I were in Europe, I kept thinking how fortunate we are to be able to be so mobile. There were just so many steps and stairs and uneven walkways. It’s such a gift to be able to walk!
That said, I smiled at the standoff between you and your chiropractor! Have patience, Jenny, I know it’s hard, but you’ll feel better soon! It just takes time (I know, easy for ME to say way over here, but it does, and just think – a few weeks ago you wouldn’t have been able to do even the one minute on! So you’re progressing! It’s just always slower than you might like.)

    1. Thank you Nicole. If you and Birchie could just come live with me and give me pep talks every day, my life would be SO GREAT!

  11. Congrats Mama!! I’m sure you’re feeling all the feels. What are his plans now? And will you get some time at home with him? I guess I’ll have to wait for the next post…

It’s always fun to see fellow bloggers in everyday clothing. You look so cute!

    1. Thanks Wendy! He’s staying in Texas for now but will be home for a while in July and August. And yes- it’s probably weird to see me in something other than running clothes!

  12. Huge congrats to the graduate! I’m very emotional, so I was a basket case at all three of my kids’ graduations (high school and college, LOL), though each subsequent commencement did get easier. Your discussion with your chiro made me laugh 😉

    1. Yes, I guess with six graduations total it would get easier! or, maybe not… I can see how I would get even more emotional when the last one was graduating.

  13. JENNY! That outfit looks fabulous on you and what a happy day! I can’t believe you have a college grad. Wowzers. That’s awesome. And now you’ll get to travel to a much more varied climate for all his post-grad stuff!!

It’s such a balance – the perspective of how “bad” things could be with the frustration over what we can’t do. I think both are normal and it takes a bit of both in life. Part of the reason you are so mobile is because your prioritize exercise but it can also lead to nagging injuries. I can see why it’s frustrating and you have feel that way AND be thankful you are able to be up and about.

Can’t wait to hear all the details of the graduation!!!

    1. Thank you Elisabeth! And you’re right- it is all a tricky balance. And, of course more details than you probably want will be coming soon!

  14. I love the outfit on you, and I’m glad you had a fun and full graduation weekend with your son and husband!

Sorry about the issues with running! Is it possible for you to see a physical therapist who is a runner, or has experience treating runners? My PT (who now programs my strength training for me) is amazing because she’s an ultrarunner herself and understands that us runners want to get back to running pain free as soon as we can. She really helped me when I was dealing with peroneal tendonitis in 2021 and I haven’t had any issues since. I know it might take more work to find someone like this but it’s worth it if you can!

    1. I agree that would be a good way to go- but I don’t even know how to go about it. I’ll start doing some research. Thank you for the support and kind words!

  15. Oh! Congratulations to your son! How exciting! And you look amazing! I love your outfit!

What a week! I don’t get super emotional about things, but this senior year (upcoming senior year) is hitting harder than expected. Oof. It’s a lot. Big hugs.

I hope that hamstring starts acting right!

    1. Thank you Jenn! And- I challenge you NOT to be emotional when your son graduates AND GOES TO COLLEGE. It’s a lot, and you might even need to join a support group. lol.
