walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Hot But Happy

Guess what- I had a pretty great week! You know how every run can feel so hard, for so long, and then it’s like a switch is flipped, and everything suddenly feels good? That’s what happened here! I’ve finally conquered the heat- and that’s a good thing, because in spite of the fact that school is starting, we still have LOTS of hot weather ahead of us. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Let’s get into it!

Sunday

7 mile run! I can’t say every single step of this run felt good, but the heat and fatigue didn’t hit until the last mile- so I consider it a success.

Monday

Upper body workout at the gym. I did the “big four”- bench press, overhead press, rows, and lat pulldowns. Look how colorful the background is in this photo- our gym has murals on all the walls.

Tuesday

4 mile run. I had a hard time getting out the door this morning, and as a result forgot my Garmin. Oh well- I know how far four miles is, and it was actually kind of fun running without a watch! I should do this more often.

Wednesday

Leg day at the gym! The glute press machine is broken 50% of the time, and this was a broken day. Instead I really focused on squats and did some extra sets, which came back to bite me later in the week.

Trying to look jaunty.

In the evening we had a little marching band preview concert! They do it every year in the courtyard of our school. It was my first “second to last” event (my daughter is starting her junior year)- now we only have one of these left!

Thursday

5 mile run! This run felt really good, and somehow I got it in BEFORE the crazy DOMS from those squats set in. As the day went on though, I got more and more uncomfortable. Ugh.

Friday

Legs are SO SORE. I did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, and planned to do hip stability exercises later in the day- but I was so sore I convinced myself to skip them. Sigh!

Saturday

Legs are STILL a little sore (from Wednesday’s workout) but I got out for a run. I was only planning 3 miles- I was crunched for time- but when I got outside it was overcast and breezy. I immediately decided that 4 miles was happening.

Fun fact- every time I take a running video, I think I’m smiling and that my left arm is NOT crossing over my body. DOH! The camera doesn’t lie…

Later in the day, I did do those hip stability exercises! I can feel a tiny niggle in my hip, reminding me not to get lazy with these.

Sunday

On tap for today- sleeping in! And then, the gym in the afternoon. It should be a leg day, but I MIGHT run on the treadmill. We’ll see! We will also be getting ourselves organized for the whirlwind which is… the first day of school. It’s upon us!

How was your week? Is school starting where you are?

If you take a photo or video of yourself running- is your body doing what you think, or is it actually completely different?

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. LOL, I’ve never videoed myself running but I’m sure I’d be wondering what the heck was going on. Even my selfies surprise me some times!

Glad you had a nice week and were able to fit in a slightly longer run when the weather was “nicer” than you expected — because who but a runner would call the clouds nice weather!

    1. Ha, yes, we runners have a different definition of “nice!” Give me clouds, wind and rain and I’ll be happy.

  2. I actually like looking at photos of myself doing all my activities–it helps me check my form. I don’t have a lot of body awareness, so this is important!!

School is starting extra early this year! I’m shocked by how many of the local schools are starting this week. What happened to summer?

    1. I know- my brother in law is a teacher near Chicago and he starts this week as well. We always used to start after Labor Day, but that seems rare now.

  3. I am glad you are adjusting to the heat and got a longer run in without any issues! I will do 8 this morning after Phil is up. I usually run on Saturday but it was very rainy yesterday!

You know BTS is quite far off for us. But I got Paul’s school supplies this week when I was off work for my string of doctor appts. It was nice to shop when the store was a bit less hectic!

    1. Yes- very important NOT to do BTS shopping the weekend before it starts- I’ve learned that the hard way. For high school, there’s no supply list- the teachers tell the kids what they need on the first day and it’s usually just a matter of buying a couple binders. I don’t miss the days of those long, specific school supply lists!

    1. I think I was happier when I didn’t take videos, ha ha. But I guess it’s good to know what’s actually going on.

  4. NAKED RUNNING!!!! I used to think about leaving my Garmin behind once in a while, but I never acted on it. The only time that I can remember running without a watch is for a prediction 5k, where you had to guess your time in advance, could not wear a watch during the race, and the winners were ranked by how close they came to their predicted time.

I never took running selfies, so my only running photos are from races. For the races that went well, I either looked like I was dying or I was doing something really goofy when the photo was taken. For bad races for some reason I took good photos.

    1. Oh, I’ve had some absolutely hideous race photos. And- that race sounds extra challenging! You would really have to have a good feel for your pace, something I’m not great at right now.

  5. Oh seeing myself running in videos is always eye opening! Yes I agree, there are those weeks that running just clicks and feels magical. We have to enjoy those weeks when they happen!

    1. I hope I can keep up the good feeling for a while- we’ll see. Cooler weather would help, but we’re a long way from that.

  6. We have this conversation all the time, but I cannot believe it’s time for Angie to go back to school! And Kelsey’s (Girl Next Door) kids went back a while ago. Like IN JULY.

Our last day of school this year was the absolute final day of June, and we go back just after Labour Day (always). So summer is still weeks away from being done for us. I have mixed feelings about it. It does get tiring having the kiddos home, but there is something lovely about NO LUNCHBOXES and not having to wake up a grumpy teen to get started for school. Thankfully, our high school starts fairly late, so she’ll actually get to sleep in 30ish minutes later this year than she could in middle school. Which means she and her little brother might not even overlap in the mornings. It will be a big shift, but I’m excited for it.

    1. I spent some time this afternoon prepping lunch food for the week (or at least the first few days) SIGH! Also, our high school starts super early. It’s going to be painful… but we’ll get used to it.

  7. I was always curious who took your running photos!
My kids started school on the 6th, it seems insanely early but they have no school in June.

    1. Hi Emily! Yes, I take my own photos- I prop the phone up on a fire hydrant or trash can, then take a video. And then I’ll take a screen shot from the video.
The 6th IS early!!! Eek, school just keeps getting earlier and earlier.

  8. Isn’t it amazing how a similar, yet different exercise (squats versus the glute machine ) can leave you feeling so much sorer? I wonder why the glute machine is broken so often? I hope the little niggle in your hip doesn’t turn out to be anything.

I’m not sure when school starts in our county. We used to start after Labor Day, but I’m not sure that’s still a Virginia law. Yes, there was/is actually a law called the Kings Dominion (a local amusement park) law which said public schools in Northern Virginia couldn’t start until after Labor Day to allow amusement parks to get the most out of tourism before school started back up.

    1. REALLY? That’s interesting! I’m always wondering the reasons behind the school start dates. I heard our early start has something to do with the football season, but I don’t really understand that.

  9. I’m with you on the running for pictures! *every* time I take a picture and make a conscious effort to have good form, my arms are always crossed over my body. Glad you are running outside again! How fun to see the marching band preview. Good times ahead!!

  10. Yay for the runs feeling good in spite of the heat! I did my long run on Friday before work so I had to wake up at 4 am to be able to make it to the trails by 5:30 so I’d have time for 10 miles. It was still 85 when I started and the humidity was high (for AZ) but I felt very accomplished getting in that many miles before work! I did want to do another 9-10 miles on Saturday but I decided to “sleep in” til 6 and do 5 miles instead so it was kind of an unplanned cutback week, but I think my body needed it.

My running selfies turn out fine because I can sort of control them (I just delete the bad ones haha) but in race photos, I’m always surprised by how bad my form looks, or I’m making a weird face!

    1. i have so many TERRIBLE race photos! Definitely worse than my selfies.
I would feel very accomplished getting 10 miles in before work- but getting up at 4 am, ouch.

    2. So glad you had a good week! I love those weeks when all those workouts feel so good. I might need to find out what kind of hip stability exercises you do because I’ve been having a nagging pain on and off with my hip. Glad you’re finally accustomed to the heat and hope back to school goes well.

  11. Ohno! I hate forgetting my watch! I don’t feel right without it! But I do love those murals!

On the other hand, school started for us today and omg. How am I going to get through this? It just feels so different this year.

Happy first day of junior year to your daughter!

  12. Now that you’ve mentioned it, I want to take a video of myself engaged in physical activity! I suck at selfies, so perhaps, I should outsource this responsibility to someone else. I’m always impressed by the photos you come up with. Does taking the photo cut into your stats, or do you hit pause while your photographing?

  13. Never videoed myself but those race photos don’t lie…

Glad to hear your running is going well..

I keep seeing FB posts about Ft Lauderdale. I hope I’m strong enough not to register.

Up North, school starts after Labor Day

  14. I should try running without a watch! How freeing. I’m too tied up in Strava stats, ha! So glad you’ve turned a corner and running is feeling better Jenny!
