walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Not the Week I Wanted…

If you read my post on Friday, you know I hit a little bump in the road this week. If you didn’t, then read on! You will hear all about it. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Here’s how it all went wrong… ER, I mean, how it all went DOWN. That’s what I meant.

Sunday

THIS was a normal day! I opted to sleep in a little, which meant I ran on the treadmill at the gym. 4 lovely, air conditioned miles!

It’s harder than you might think to get a decent treadmill running photo… which is how I managed to cut my head off.

Monday

I had planned to go to the gym with my daughter later in the day, but I just wasn’t feeling great. I mean, I rarely get sick, so I didn’t think it could possibly be that. But I just felt kind of… off, and my left eye was super irritated. That’s weird. I ended up making this a day off.

Tuesday

ARRRRRRRG!  I have pink eye! And, a nasty cold to go with it. WHO did this to me??? I demand an explanation! And an apology! After sputtering angrily for a while, I accepted my fate and settled down to read and sleep.

Later in the day I started to feel restless though, and I thought of Woody Allen’s line from Annie Hall- “If I get too mellow, I start to ripen and rot.” I needed to do SOMETHING, so I did all my hip stability exercises. That felt good, but I didn’t feel up to much more.

Wednesday

Okay. Let’s try running. I’m a firm believer that if you CAN run, it will make you feel better. I didn’t have a sore throat and all my symptoms seemed to be from the neck up.

I always walk for a five minutes before I start my run, and during that walk my Garmin gave me a “relax” notification- “Your stress levels seem higher than normal.” Wait, I haven’t even started running yet!

I’m happy to say, this run was fine. Not amazing, but my breathing felt good- nothing in my lungs. I think overall it helped to get things circulating through (and out of) my body.

Thursday

Sigh. My eye is still red and irritated, but no longer swollen and weepy. My cold is in that phase where I feel better but sound worse (lots of coughing and nose blowing). Obviously I can’t go to the gym, so I did a lower body workout at home.

Friday

Still waiting for that eye to get better so I can put in my contacts again! I hate wearing glasses. Another run, this time 4 miles. I have to admit it was tiring- but I was still glad I did it.

Saturday

After so much sitting around this week, I spent the day… sitting in the car. I took my daughter to USF (in Tampa) to attend a flute workshop. She’ll be a junior next year so we have to start thinking about colleges! I wanted her to meet the flute teacher at USF and see if they like each other.

The drive is four hours each way (ack) so the original plan was to stay overnight with friends. Under the circumstances, that didn’t seem like a good idea (I’m better, but probably not well enough to sleep in someone else’s house). So we drove there and back the same day.

Sunday

On tap for today- well, I have to do SOMETHING after all that sitting! The question is… am I ready for the gym? Is the gym ready for me? Or will it be a hot outdoor run? A workout will happen.

How was your week? Have you ever had pink eye?

Do you like road trips? – I do! Driving eight hours was a lot, but I still enjoyed it.

  1. sorry to hear it was not a great week but glad you were able to run. I firmly believe running makes everything better.
I don’t like driving for long hours, but maybe that’s because I haven’t done one for ages. Maybe I will enjoy in the near future once I am back fully into driving mode.

    1. Thanks Coco. Yes, running really does make everything better. There are definitely times when you should not do it- but it seemed fine this week.

    1. Thank you Tobia! Yes, I do wonder if I would have recovered faster if I hadn’t pushed myself??? I’ll never know.

  2. I like road trips. Though I prefer to be the passenger.

Hope you’re feeling better and this week goes well.

    1. Thanks Darlene! I usually am the passenger if my husband is with me, and I do prefer that. But he couldn’t go this time. I was okay with driving.

  3. Ugh, on having pink eye! I got it last year from the grandkids. I also had it when our oldest son was three months old, but somehow he didn’t get it from me. Hope you start feeling 100% from your cold soon, too. Glad you could get some runs in, though. Like you said, exercise pretty much always helps.

Did your daughter like the flute instructor at USF? You know we like road trips. Stay tuned for another one coming up very soon!

    1. So far no one else in my family has gotten sick! Fingers crossed. My daughter did like the flute instructor, so now I’m going to look into attending other events at the school. I think it would be a really good fit for her.
Ooh- I can’t wait to hear about your next road trip!

  4. I’m sorry to hear you have been sick! Summer colds are the worst–but of course, it’s always summer in south Florida, lol. I like to try to run when I have a cold, because it really does seem to help me feel better. I hope the pink eye clears up. It’s been years since I’ve had pink eye, but it’s not something i would want to experience again.

How exciting that your daughter is looking at schools!

    1. I’ve never had pink eye before! It’s definitely NOT fun. And yes- I can’t believe it’s just about time to start thinking about colleges again.

  5. Your first thought when you got sick is always my first thought WHO DID THIS TO ME???? Well, whoever that person was, we’ll just tell them “well played”.

I agree that just a little bit of physical activity when you’re sick can work wonders. Obviously hard workouts are off the table, but a short, less intense cardio sesh really helps. And yep, I know the “ripen and rot” feeling.

Here’s to feeling better! That gym better be ready for you! As you know, I adore a road trip. 8 hours in one day is a little intense, but sometimes that’s what you have to do.

    1. Yes, here’s to feeling better… I’m ready to get back to real life again. And, eight hours was a lot but it was broken up into two four hour drives, with a big break in the middle. So it wasn’t bad.

  6. That is a rough week! I hope you are back to 100% very soon! I had a pretty good week overall. It was so rainy here and days of rain really starts to wear on my mood. But the forecast is starting to improve and by next weekend we might be in the 90s. It’s been so cold this week so I am ready for some heat!!

I do not like road trips at all. I did have fun driving back to Minnesota from Charlotte with my mom when I moved back here in 2014. But I get very antsy after 4-4.5 hours! We frequently drive 3 hours each way to my parents but we let the boys have their iPads. I know someone disagree with letting kids have iPads in the car but it makes the drive much more pleasant!!

    1. Oh, ipads in the car- do whatever you need to do! There’s nothing worse than driving with cranky, crying, complaining kids. It won’t hurt them to have some screen time. I hope you get some sunshine, and yes- if it’s 90 that means you can get outside (into some water, hopefully). I hope your camping trip happens.

  7. Aww man, I hate summer colds – they seem so unfair! i also try to stay active when sick. I only really take off if I’m feverish or weak or have trouble breathing. Sometimes getting in a run helps me feel better for at least a little while! It “sweats it out” or something. I got pinkeye a few years ago but it’s been a while. With 3 kids, I’m surprised I/we don’t get it more!

    1. I’ve never had it before! And I agree- especially right after a run I do seem to feel better. I’m definitely sweating it out down here.

  8. I don’t mind road trips but you do them a lot more than I do these days — we did a lot more in my son’s lacrosse days. So how did the flute teacher meeting go?

I’m glad you’re on the mend and appreciate how considerate you are of others. I’ve been in plenty of gyms with coughing/hacking people. Grrr!

I caught up on your other posts and am glad your diet is paying off. I’ve been learning about our gut microbiome and it is fascinating how much goes on in there and how much it matters. 🙂

    1. Yes, it really does matter! For whatever reason, my gut microbiome was really thrown off, and doing this diet is going to get it healthy again.
Honestly, the main thing that kept me out of the gym and out of work this week was the pink eye. It’s so contagious, and it was just very obvious that I shouldn’t be around people. If it were just a cold, I might have powered through and just wiped off all the equipment very carefully after using.
My daughter liked the flute teacher! So… we’ll see. I think USF would be a good school for her.

  9. I have not had pink eye in decades but it sure happens to the best of us. Hopefully it resolves pretty quickly. If I don’t have the energy to run, a nice walk and some core or barre/pilates always does the body good. Hope you are feeling better!

    1. Thank you Deborah! I’ve never had pink eye before- first time for everything I guess. Yes, a walk always helps and you can never go wrong with core.

  10. Ugh, pink eye is awful.
I have a road trip coming up this week! It’s a ten hour drive each way, so a pretty long distance. I’m generally a fan of road trips, or any trips really.

    1. Ooh! That sounds fun. 10 hours is what we used to drive when we went to Texas (it’s 20 hours total, so we would do 10 hours per day.) I want to hear all about this!

  11. Ugh, the pink eye sounds miserable! I don’t remember ever having it (unless I had it as a kid?). I was lucky to avoid it when any of my kids had it (which was maybe only once, each???). And what’s up with that cold rocking your world? At least it sounds like things are on the way out of your system. That’s really exciting about your daughter’s prospects!

  12. I imagined you were resting this week… you meant resting from work, not exercise!
You’re amazing! I’m glad running helped you feel better! And I hope you’re all better now.

    1. Thank you Maya! My eye is so much better. I still have lingering congestion which is making me cranky though.

  13. I’m glad you were still able to run despite being sick, and hopefully you can get back to a more normal routine this week!

8 hours of driving in a day is a lot! I like road trips but I’m usually the passenger and 6 hours of sitting in the car is about my limit. I think the longest I’ve driven is 4 hours and I was tired after that!
