walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Our Time to Shine

Hello! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) Again a big thank you to San for leading NaBloPoMo, 30 posts in 30 days of November. As usual I didn’t fit in everything I wanted this week, but there were some great things, including a trail run and a weather miracle. Read on for details!

Monday

4 mile run to start the week! Ah, it’s nice to finish a morning run in the daylight.

Still tank top weather, but not for long…

Tuesday

GAH!

After my incessant whining and complaining about the heat, I was actually glad this wasn’t a running day for me! Brr.

I stayed inside and did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout. I went up to heavier dumbbells and… ouch! That was hard. I followed that with an upper body strength workout- overhead press, lateral raises, and triceps (ahem… obviously). It’s been a while since I really pushed myself with upper body strength, and it felt good.

Wednesday

Long run on the trail! The running gods were smiling on me- it was 52 degrees when I started this run, and mid 60s when I finished. I felt great and completed 16.5 miles.

PERFECT running weather- we really paid our dues for this.

Thursday

Oooookay. Everything felt good, except my low back, which obviously hates me. That part of my body was so stiff and sore. I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back pain. and later in the day I did her yoga for hips and lower back release.. It definitely helped!

Friday

I got out for an early run. Nothing really hurt, but my hips just felt… off. I started thinking about how I’ve done NO lower body strength at all this week… so I cut this run short (ran 3 miles instead of 4), went home, and did all my hip stability exercises. There, that’s better!

After work I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back mobility,, and then it was time for a football playoff game!

Halftime show.

In the first half, our team did not look good, and we were tied 7-7. I got really sad, thinking it could be our last game of the season. But they came back strong for the second half and won 35-7. Second playoff game is next Friday!

Saturday

Oh, I had big plans for this morning. I was going to get up early, go to the gym before work, and do the Stairmaster AND a lower body strength workout. Hahahahahaha! We got home so late from the game, I didn’t get to bed till midnight. I ended up sleeping in.

Then, I felt like crap all day. I had JUST SHARED the quote, “Follow your routine, not your mood.” I should have just gotten up and done that workout! Finally, I got out for a run in the late afternoon.

Oh yeah- it gets dark early now!

This run felt AMAZING! I forgot- it’s no longer summer, I can run whenever I want. I ran 4 miles, nothing hurt, and I felt like I was floating. I should run at this time more often!

Sunday

Well, it was a great week except for one thing- I never did that lower body strength workout. Guess what’s on tap for today? Yep.

How was your week? Any incredible workouts, or workout fails? How was your weather?

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary! I started the day with a long run… … and

Tuesday Topics and FIGS!

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. I am taking strength training as medicine nowadays, so at least 2 full body sessions per week. this week I had a in person yoga session at work and that was so fun!
I love the feeling of flowing.

    1. I agree Coco- strength training is medicine. I HAVE to figure out how to fit it in- it’s hard when I do a long run in the middle of the week. But, it’s so important.

  2. Wow you had a cold snap in FL! Dang! I am glad the weather is cooling off but that is a little bit excessive! Yay for an afternoon run that was comfortable!!

My workouts mishap was that I went to the wrong OTF studio on Thursday. I forgot they had a schedule change so I had to go to a different studio. I was 5 min late for class but it all worked out. I am loving the OTF classes so much so am going to sign up for a 2 class/week membership. Besides that thursday class I ran 5 miles with a friend I hadn’t seen in over 2 years! And I’ll do another OTF class this morning.

    1. We only had 40s for one day, now it’s back up to 60s at night. I would prefer 50s, actually.
I’ve never done OTF, but I know I lot of people love them. I’m glad you’re liking it so much!

  3. Congrats to your team; that was quite scoring rampage in the second half! Isn’t it crazy (though it really does happen every year, LOl) how dark it’s getting so early? It seems earlier than usual this “early” into the recent time change.

  4. “Follow your routine, not your mood” – what a great quote!!! Thanks for that one, Jenny!
Pain-free runs for the win! So glad everything is working out for you. Combining running with strength and yoga works wonders.

My workout fail that I got up at 5.15am to meet two others at 6.15am for a run. One didn’t make it and the other came 45 minutes later because she overslept. Was I annoyed!

    1. Yes, that would be annoying!!! And- running+strength+yoga= success. I just have to figure out how to do it all- it’s definitely possible.

  5. That is such a good quote! Following a routine keep me sane for sure. I’m sorry to hear about your back pain. Sounds like you are managing it well though. My husband has had back pain for the last week and it’s really getting to him. I will share those videos with him. Maybe it can help him too! Nothing sadder than a runner who can’t run! You did have some great weather for running this week. Glad you were able to enjoy it!!

    1. Well, at least my back pain doesn’t keep me from running! I guess if it did I would be much more consistent with the yoga. It’s getting bad enough that I probably need to go to the chiropractor for an adjustment. Not such what Alan’s specific issue is, but getting adjusted really helps me.

  6. “Follow your routine, not your mood” was the quote I needed today! Glad the temps were on your side this week. I got new shoes for my spin bike this week that fit my post-surgery foot so much more comfortably, so I’ve been enjoying my workouts so much more. How this didn’t occur to me a month ago… I’ll never understand, haha!

    1. I know Lindsay- sometimes there’s such an easy solution and we don’t see it! Glad you figured that out, and glad you’re back to working out!

  7. Hooray for your team’s win and for a day to sleep late. I love summer but I do like that I can run anytime right now. My days are numbered though. Too cold and icy will be the situation very soon. I’m thrilled that this past few days was mild here and I got to run/walk outside. I’ve been continuing on the path of one Caroline Girvan lifting workout followed by a 4.5 mile walk or run, but those days are numbered. It takes me almost 2 hours to workout and I don’t really have time for that.

    1. Yes- it’s hard to take 2 hours to work out every day. But- you’re doing it now and that must feel amazing. Do you have a treadmill you can run on in the winter?

  8. OMG I love that quote! It really resonates with me… also kudos to you always listening to your body and adjusting your workout based on that. I’m so impressed with how you add in yoga and stability exercises based on what you need. It clearly helps! Glad you got in a good afternoon run now that summer is over. Also, those temperatures — 44° — sound like what we have up here in cleveland! I can’t imagine them down near you.

    1. We couldn’t really imagine it either, ha ha. Floridians don’t know what to do when it gets that cold.
As far as listening to my body- I’ve tried NOT listening to my body, and it never ends well. At least I’m getting older and wiser.

  9. I love that you adjusted your routine based on what your body was telling you, and I’m glad you are enjoying some beautiful weather on your runs after a LONG summer.

    1. Yes, key word “long.” THAT is the problem with Florida! I mean it’s hot everywhere in the summer- but heat and humidity in October/November is too much.

  10. We haven’t gotten that cold yet but it’s happening this week — it’s supposed to rain several days and the highs will only be in the upper 50s to mid 60s! I’m not sure I’m ready for it, but it’ll be a nice change and I’m excited to wear my fall clothes. It sounds like you had really nice weather for your long run!

My 15 mile long run yesterday was basically perfect, temps were in the 70s with a slight breeze, only a few other people were on the trails and I unexpectedly had my fastest half marathon time since early 2022! Love when things come together and feel good, especially for a long run. My next race, a 60K, is only 2 months out now and I’m sure that time will fly by since most of it is during the holiday season, which sadly always goes by too quickly!

    1. YES. The holiday season goes by way, way too fast. But having a race in January gives you something to look forward to.
70s would be a little warm for my tastes- I would say low 60s is my sweet spot. But- it’s probably a lot drier there, so 70s feels good. And- 50s and rainy is COLD. Yes, get out the fall clothes! i’m jealous- we’re back up to highs in the 80s this week.

  11. Nice work with that upper body workout! Also, the quote “follow your routine, not your mood” is brilliant. More people need to realise that that’s the way to go!
Big yay to your improved running weather! I haven’t felt great this week but had some exciting times in the gym. Weird mix, I know!

    1. I love how everyone is complimenting me on the quote- but I didn’t DO it. Talk is cheap, ha ha. Well, I’d like to say I learned a lesson.
Glad you had some good workouts! Sometimes you can feel crappy but have a surprisingly good workout.

  12. sometimes you just need sleep!
It was freezing today… and windy! Not ready for this weather so early.

    1. Well- maybe it will warm up again before winter hits for real. I know they had REALLy cold temps in Chicago during the week, and this weekend it got up to 60. So you never know.

  13. I hope your lower body strength work went well today! I don’t share it on my blog, but I should mention that I do a Yoga with Adriene class before I go to the gym for strength training. It really loosens me up!

Congrats on that long trail run! The cooler weather sure makes a difference, doesn’t it?

    1. Yes, the cooler weather makes ALL the difference! And, I’ll have to try yoga before the gym- it sounds like a great idea.

  14. Jenny, you had a really great week of workouts and how great that the weather played nice for your long run on Wednesday! I’m loving our weather here in Charlotte where it’s about 10° warmer than at home.

How fun that your high school football team won and the season continues!

    1. Yes, I would imagine it’s pretty nice in Charlotte. And yes, I’m really enjoying the high school football season- I’m not ready for it to end yet!

  15. Wow, 44* with a “Feels like” 33! That is way colder than we ever get here. I’m surprised it gets down that low in Florida! I’m glad you got in so many good runs this week, even though stuff felt off a bit. I notice you never take rest days, at least not from both running and strength training. Has that always been the case? For how many years?

  16. Aw! One more week of band! Our season is now over, and I am gutted!

The weather has been all over the place and I absolutely love it. I love the colder days with the chill in the air. I’m sleepin gin a little more, but that’s ok. I probably need the rest!

Take care of your lower back!

  17. It is so hard to fit gym work and running in and have rest days! I’ve not worked it out yet. I’ve been sick this week, hence not reading blog posts even – I thought I had a cold but I suspect it’s Covid as everything tastes weird (but it’s not too bad, presumably because I got my vaccination a few weeks ago). Sousaphones at the game!! A friend of mine has just got a sousaphone and I’m very excited about going to meet it!
