walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Preseason Vibes

We’re into football preseason! But it’s also “cozy preseason” and “spooky preseason.” I’m starting to see articles and advertisements advising me to “get ready for cozy/spooky season” and I’m all for it!!! I am READY!

When we left off last week I was cautiously nursing a cranky hip… and it was better this week. I kept up my hip exercises and made my runs a little shorter, and it’s going well. I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown. Let’s see how I kicked off the preseason!

Monday

3 mile run, EARLY. This was the first run where I needed a headlamp since last May. I don’t mind running in the dark- at least it’s a little cooler.

Sun was up as I was finishing.

Tuesday

I started the day with the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, then did my hip stability exercises. Coco asked me to share them- I’ll include them in another post, but I focus a lot on the muscles on the side of my hips (glute medius, glute minimus and TFL) because that’s where I feel weak on my left side.

Wednesday

I don’t work on Wednesdays, so after I dropped my daughter at school I went to a park with a cross country trail. 6 hot miles- but my hip felt good.

Thursday

Leg day at the gym, and hip stability exercises. Here I am once again at the squat bar.

Friday

Another early 3 mile run. It’s pitch dark when I start, but the sun rises while I’m out there. Later in the day I did a little bit of upper body strength. I’ve been so focused on my legs and hips, I forget all about upper body. Honestly, it’s hard to make myself care, but I know I need it.

Saturday

Another 3 mile run before work Yay! I ran two days in a row and my hip did well. Later in the day I did my hip stability exercises again.

At night I watched the Dolphins game, woohoo! The first can of pumpkin has also made an appearance…

It’s pumpkin preseason!

Sunday

On tap for today… sleeping in! Pumpkin pancakes! Reading… and if I’m really good, I’ll do some upper body strength.

How was your week? Are you excited for football/cozy/spooky preseason?

  1. I’m so glad your head is feeling better! It gives me hope that if I continue to baby mine maybe it will feel better soon also. I can’t wait to hear about your hip stability workouts. I look forward to Spooky season, but summer is my absolute favorite. I know we have different summer weather so that probably plays a role.

    1. Yes, summer wouldn’t be your favorite is you lived in Florida. Although- it was nice to have no school and get up a little later! Ugh, why are hips so finicky? I hope yours feels better.

  2. LoL on pumpkin pre-season. PSLs are rolling out this week, I think? I say it’s too early but I won’t rain on your pumpkin parade!

Watching football yesterday my husb said we were teams we don’t care about play in games that don’t count, but I still enjoyed it!

  3. I wish I was a pumpkin person–heck, I don’t even like pumpkin pie! But you can have my share of pumpkin, so more for you! Yay for football, though!

Glad to hear your hip is feeling better! Just in time for cooler weather!

    1. HA! We wont’ get cooler weather until… probably November. But that gives me lots of time to make sure my hip is bulletproof.
I’ll take your share of the pumpkin!

  4. Yay for a good hip week! Also for a cooler week. Both Doggo and I are much more enthusiastic about walking in pleasant temperatures. Hubs and I went biking together for the first time since October.

I saw a pumpkin lasagna recipe that looks very intriguing, so that’s what I’ve got on tap for my first pumpkin hit of the season.

    1. Ooh! I love pumpkin pasta dishes.
Sadly it wasn’t any cooler here, unless you count the fact that we finally got some rain I guess it’s cooler while it’s raining, but afterwards it’s just hot and steamy again. Ugh.

  5. I am definitely a cozy season girl-as you know! Eagerly looking forward to it as well. Also love pumpkin but don’t see it making an appearance until October! Glad to see your hip is behaving this week-you look happy

  6. I love summer but I also love fall! It’s actually pretty fall like here this weekend with highs barely hitting 70. That means I can take my time getting out the door this am for my long run.

I’m so so on pumpkin, though. I like it but I don’t LOVE it. I love watching football, though! We start our season against the Bears in Chicago on MNF!! We have a new QB (JJ McCarthy) that we drafted 2 seasons ago and then he got injured in a practice so this will be his first game. I am nervous on his behalf!

    1. Oh, I can’t wait. I’ve been enjoying the preseason games but it will be even more fun to see games that count.
I’ll bet your fall weather is BEAUTIFUL.

  7. Jenny, yay for a less cranky hip! It sounds like those hip exercises are the magic sauce so keep them up!

We had such gross misty weather this past week that I’m up for anything else. Well, not really. 😉

    1. Hmm, misty would be fun for a day but not a whole week! I do like clear skies. Maybe your mist will give way to nice fall temps.

  8. You’re leaning into pumpkin treats and your hip is behaving (because you’re doing all the right things and taking care, but still)!
    So happy for you!

  9. Glad the hip is doing better! I’m guessing your sunrises are pretty late there to be running in the dark — I started one of my runs at 5:45 last week which is about an hour earlier than I usually do but the sun was already rising by then so I didn’t need a light. But I know in a few months it’ll be dark again!

It’s hard for me to get into cozy season when it’s still almost 110 here, ugh. It’s supposed to cool down a bit this week though (into the 90s haha) and we may get some rain so I’m excited about that. I’ll take whatever I can get at this point!

    1. Oh wow- the sun doesn’t rise here until about 6:30, That is a big difference! I don’t mind running in the dark, at least it’s cooler, but I wouldn’t want to do it for every single run.
Ack, 110. Um, I hope you get your “cool down” this week, and rain. It’s been raining a lot here, which just makes things even more steamy. Sigh.

    1. i know- if I lived up north I wouldn’t be excited about football weather either. Here in Florida we just want it to cool down!

  10. I’m not one to care much about spooky season, but I do love football season – so long as I have a kid at a college with a tailgate culture. Ed went to IU and Mini is a senior at ND. I want to squeeze in as many ND games as possible during her senior year, but I already have a conflict with the first home game. It’s Reg’s family weekend at Creighton and we plan to go to that.

My week was fine. A little crazy with school supply buying, which I didn’t do far enough in advance. Dropping two kids at colleges two weekends in a row was busy. My house is begging for some attention. Maybe when the weather cools down a bit. I started back to my daycare, but it’s been a staggered start – one 2 year old starts this week and last year a sis/bro 2 yo and baby started on Tu/Thurs. They joined the 1 yo who was here a few days a week all summer. Like I said, chaos. I’m happy that Kay and Rae are back in school – they like the structure and I was ready for a break from them.

I’m glad the hip has been feeling better. I can only imagine how early you must get up to run before it gets too hot. I’m missing my runs, but instead I’ve been walking 4.5 daily and then doing a Caroline Girvan strength video. When I run, I only run every other day (that’s the most my PT husband advises for me, so I am technically doing more cardio). My back doesn’t feel any better. Humpf.

    1. Yes, that sounds chaotic! And, football is so fun when you’re rooting for a college team. I feel a little lost now that my son is no longer at Baylor (although I’ll still root for them). For some reason I don’t feel as loyal to NU, maybe it’s because he’ll only be there two years? Anyway- I hope things settle down for you a bit with everyone back in school. Going to the games and Family Weekend sounds FUN!

  11. no no not pumpkin season yet!

Glad to hear the hip is feeling better.

Sad that it is dark out in the morning but still too warm to wait until after work.

  12. Jenny, I’m going to be honest with you. I’ve had to wear a sweatshirt while walking the dog for the last two mornings and I’m sad. I hate that the cold weather is coming at me. I am trying to feel your joy about pre spooky season, but I can literally feel my SAD making me sadder and sadder and I’m starting to think that nothing can be done after work ever again. I need some of your optimism to wear off on me!

  13. I’m not keen on Halloween (I KNOW, HOW LAME OF ME), but I do love pumpkin pie, fall foliage, return to routines and the weather in September and October. It’s all over way too fast for my liking, but I look forward to those two fleeting months all year long!

  14. I need to look at the college football game schedules and see if we can make it to one! I have a few trips already planned and they are messing up the football weekends. I actually wore a light jacket for most of the day today… fall is close!

  15. But how did you USE the pumpkin? Inquiring minds want to know! So glad you had a better week with your hip. I’m kind of with Engie, though – it’s chilly here and will be for a while. I know we’ll get at least one more heat wave before the cold really sets in, but this week’s weather is reminding me that the gorgeous weather will not last forever!
