walkers walk… but runners fly

Conflict and Resolution

Ha! Muffin and Foxy are getting a little more used to each other. They were looking at each other here, and just as I took the photo Muffin hissed. Well… progress, not perfection!

How was your Labor Day? Not gonna lie.. mine kind of sucked.

I always work on Labor Day, and that’s fine. But we woke up this morning to… a power outage. NOOOOOOOO!!! The thing is, there’s only so many hours you can go in South Florida without AC before you shrivel up and die

I did my run, took a cold shower, and grabbed my breakfast out of the fridge (I know you’re not supposed to open the fridge in that situation, but I really needed that food!) Then I escaped to Starbucks.

Good thing I grabbed that breakfast… because I forgot my lunch. Yes, I had a long day at work with no lunch, and my low back was really bothering me. The one bright spot was, in the afternoon my husband texted that the electricity was back on.

Ah, I CAN’T WAIT to go home and lie down! Except that my daughter texted me that she was at a friend’s (she also escaped the AC-less house) and needed me to pick them up, plus two other friends and take them all to get acai bowls. Well.. it turned into a long stretch of chauffeuring kids around.

After I dropped the last kid off, I asked my daughter for my change and she casually said, “Oh, sorry, I accidentally left it with Abby.” That was the final straw. I pulled out my list of grievances- “You mean I just paid $20 for an acai bowl? I work hard for my money! Also why couldn’t Abby’s mom do some of the driving today? And FURTHERMORE, why were you practicing last night at midnight???” It was not my finest moment.

Then we got home and Angie snapped at my husband, and everyone was in a bad mood. And then… the electricity went off AGAIN.

While we grimly went through our hurricane supplies, pulling out lanterns and battery operated fans, my daughter told me that she had period cramps today and that’s why she snapped. I told her that my back was hurting, and that’s why I snapped. It wasn’t exactly a tender moment, but it was the closest we ever get.

And guess what… the electricity came back (again) which allowed me to write this post and also will allow me to sleep tonight without bursting into flames. Phew. And- tomorrow is a whole new day.

So close… and yet so far.

How was your Labor Day? – I hope it was filled with fun and friends!

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. Uff, Jenny, what a day!
Power outages in South Florida sound absolutely brutal – no wonder you were ready to snap.
I think you showed heroic levels of patience, considering you ran, worked, chauffeured teenagers, AND survived without AC.
At least the day ended on a more upbeat note.
Today is going to be much, much better!

  2. Progress with the cats! They’ll snuggle together soon, provided the A/C is on.
I hate when a day of little miseries just gets too much.. Glad you got the electricity before bed!

  3. If I had a dime for every time I’ve done a good deed and had it spiral into the equivalent of an unplanned Uber shift/sugar momma acai bowl splurge and then taken a beat at that point to say “excuse me?” which then results in me being the bad guy…it would fund a flight to FL plus drinks and guac at the Mexican place. Let’s leave it there.

Here is to today and the beginnings of a beautiful friendship between Muffin and Foxy!

  4. Ugh, what a rough day! But it can only go up from there, right? Unfortunately I can relate — I got back to my apartment after 4 days at my parents’ house and my A/C is stuck at 84 degrees! Luckily I still have power so I was able to run my fan all night but it was not comfortable sleeping in such a warm room. I have a work order in with the maintenance team so I’m hoping they have it fixed by the time I get home from work today.

    1. NOOOOO! That’s horrible. But yes- at least you can have a fan. Still- that’s way too warm for anything but especially sleeping. I hope it gets fixed ASAP.

  5. Oh yikes, that is a rough day! That is so many power outages! Sheesh. I hope things stabilize. I would have been snippy with Angie, too. You had a long day, then you had to chauffer kids around, and your daughter didn’t keep track of her change.

I had a lot of snippy moments yesterday. The kids kept messing with each other and Will in particular did not behave well for stretches of the day. There was so much whining, too, which drives me crazy! When he wasn’t being whiny he would want to lay on me or sit on my lap and I just wanted my personal space!!

But Paul is back in school today and Will starts PK on Thursday. I’m working from home today/tomorrow so am juggling work and a 4yo which is rough. My MIL will be here tomorrow to help THANK GOD.

  6. Oh Jenny, that day sounds positively HORRID. I am so sorry you had to go through all of that.

I’m glad the power is back on. It is such a nuisance when it goes out. I’m always shocked how much it throws me for a loop. But heating and cooling and internet and hot water and all those things that I take for granted…really make a big difference.

Onward and upward today, I hope. I’m very glad you didn’t go up in flames!

  7. Jenny, those kitty photos are SO CUTE!! SO much attitude in that first one and your caption for the second one made me chuckle.
I’m sorry it was such a trying day… I hope today is better and that your lower back pain is better/gone.
(That exchange about your vulnerabilities–cramps/back pain–made me tear up. It’s so special when we connect like that <3. I hope A can see all that you did and did for her all day despite your back pain.)

  8. Well, my day sounded better than yours. We went on our boat and my hubby invited friends so I couldn’t be my grumpy self.
    Still itching though.

  9. sorry to hear about not a great day, we all have it and it’s just a “normal” down day. glad electricity came back at the end for a good night of sleep. hope you are feeling better by now.

  10. Oh jeez Jenny, what a rotten Labor Day! I hope the week has only improved! Your kitties are so cute. I love the photos of them tentatively getting to know each other!

  11. Ha, one of those “terrible rotten no good days”! It’s so funny how some days just seem like BLAH nothing is working, and then other days are delightful and it’s all green lights on easy street. Glad you can reflect on it now and that it’s behind you!

  12. Ug that is not a super fun situation! I think we all have those moments, but I am not at my finest when I am hungry, that is for certain. I applaud you that you were as calm as you were! I love your end note that it was as close as you get to apologies. Haha. Sometimes that is as much as you can do! I hope that today is going better for you.

  13. Ugh, being in pain all day, and uncomfortable in the heat, and taken for granted, and treated like your money is nothing…all so relatable. I’m glad that you both talked a little bit about it, and how the circumstances made things worse. And I hope that she heard you and listened to your grievances, and will perhaps be a bit more thoughtful next time.

  14. Oof. That does sound like a brutal day! Not having power during the summer in Florida is a recipe for disaster, but then add on all those other nuisances, and it’s no wonder you snapped at your daughter! I’m glad you were both able to talk through it – hopefully, she understood where you were coming from, too! <3

I like how the photos of the cats encapsulate your Labor Day – some hissing followed by peacefully coexisting.
