walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- A Big Week!

A lot happened this week, the most important being…

Our new kitten!

YES! We adopted a third cat, which brought a lot of joy and a lot of chaos to our house. There was also a trail run, workouts and a football game! Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Here we go…

Monday

4 mile run to start the week.

It was dark and uneventful.

Tuesday

Caroling Girvan deadbug workout and hip stability exercises. I know I keep promising to share them- I’ll put them in a post soon.

Wednesday

7 mile trail run!

I had mixed feeling about this run. Florida trails are buggy and gross this time of year. But… it was still pretty.

At night we brought our new kitty home!

Getting acquainted.

He’s six months old, so not tiny, but still a kitten. It took several days, but after lots of arguments, accusations, and recriminations, we managed to agree on a name… Foxy! It’s not my first choice, but I like it better than the other names my daughter came up with.

Thursday

Boy, did I make my life harder! I now have three cats in the house, none of whom like each other (well- Foxy wants to be friends with Muffin and Charlotte, but all they do is hiss at him). I’m trying to keep Foxy sequestered from the others as much as possible for now. This would normally have been a gym day but I didn’t want to be away from home any longer than I had to. Instead I did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout (imagine doing that while a kitten pounces on your head), my hip stability exercises, and lower body strength- squats and hip thrusts.

At night… high school football game! It was hot and muggy, but we won and the band looked good.

Halftime show.

Friday

Oof. Thursday night football game+new kitten= exhaustion. But I got out the door for a dark 3 mile run, which weirdly felt great. I guess sleep doesn’t matter much in the short term!

After work I meant to do an upper body workout, but I napped instead. At night I watched the first Baylor game! I know, my son is now at Northwestern, but I’ll always be a Baylor fan.

Saturday

4 mile run before work…

… and then later in the day an upper body strength workout. Seriously… if I don’t put more focus on my upper body, I’m going to start looking like a T-Rex.

Sunday

On tap for today… sleeping in! Pancakes! Hip stability exercises. In all the excitement, I forgot to even mention my hip. It’s doing pretty well- I felt a pulling sensation during that 7 mile run, but then the next time I ran I didn’t feel it at all. It’s nagging at me just enough to remind me to keep doing my exercises. In other news, I’ve tweaked my low back again… it’s always something.

One more thing… SHU texted me this week…

Sigh.

How was your week? –Do NOT tell me about your beautiful weather! I refuse to listen!

What is the perfect number of cats?- Three!!! Obviously.

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. I’m laughing at the ‘cold front’ graphic, because the highest day for us is 98, and the lowest is 80. I know that’s an 18 degree difference, but still, not what I would consider a ‘cold front’. But we’re an outlier, kind of like FL.

I hope Foxy settles in and the other cats accept him soon. I know cats are very territorial, so it can take a while.

Your abs in your running pics. Your hard work SHOWS woman, that is all I have to say. #goals.

    1. I think that photo is misleading. You can see definition but then a little lower (which is covered up in the photo) I have my usual bulge. Whatever! I should just take the compliment and say thank you.
I know it takes a while with cats so I’m still hopeful. Things will calm down… eventually.

  2. That looks like a nicely runnable trail! Haha, that cold front forecast.. if I wanted colder weather I would see that as a slap in the face. Like every time Met Éireann talks about heatwaves and all we get at the southern coast is 13C.
Foxy looks so big for a kitten! But at 6 months they’ve grown quite a lot. He’s handsome! I’m sure the other cats will learn to deal with the situation or even make friends with him.

    1. Yes, I could have chosen a three month old and that would have been a lot smaller (they grow so fast!) But- I really wanted this one.
Oh yes, we do see that forecast as a slap in the face! Every single person in Florida is 100% over the heat at this point.

  3. The perfect number of cats , for me , is zero because I’m extremely allergic, LOL. They are sweet little creatures, though. Good news on the hip, but ouch with the back. Yes, it’s always something… in my fit of getting out of the house yesterday morning, I stubbed my pinky toe something awful. I don’t think it’s broken, but it’s a lovely shade of dark purple.

    1. My daughter’s friend came over on Friday and she couldn’t resist playing with Foxy- and then she had an allergic reaction and was miserable. So, yes- you should have zero cats! I’m glad you’re not allergic to dogs.
Hope that toe feels better- stubbed toes seem to be a thing nowadays! Who knew there are so many hazards in the house?

  4. I love Foxy for an orange cat name! He’ll win Muffin over eventually. ( Charlotte, well maybe you’ll get quiet disdain.) The perfect number of cats is plus one more.
I went to my first football game as well- working concessions for the band. So I ignored the game, cheered the half-time show, and left after halftime. There was some lightning as I drove away, so after a 30 mon delay, the rest of the game was cancelled.( home team losing 49-0 so it was a mercy.). I had to go back and get band boy and all of his stuff. ( parade on Monday- have to dress in the full regalia!).
    Enjoy your week!

    1. Yes, I think quiet disdain from Charlotte would be the most we can hope for.
The reason why I never leave after halftime is that I have to drive my daughter home anyway! And, this time of year the weather in unpredictable- it could rain and then I’d have to turn right around to go back and get her- just like what happened to you.

  5. Foxy is a more typical cat name than the others but it’s cute!

LOL at trying to do exercises with a cat walking on you. I have to keep Scooby out of my “gym” with a baby gate.

Funny on still watching Baylor games. We are the same with Clemson — where my son went for grad school.

    1. Yes, I can definitely live with “Foxy.” I still would have preferred Hobbes but oh well.
I watched the Clemson game last night and was rooting for them- too bad they lost!

  6. Three does sound like the perfect number! Hopefully they all get along. We had a somewhat perfect running weather, but my hip injury made that somewhat depressing because I couldn’t run. I tried running yesterday but I’m paying for it today. Hope your weather turns amazing soon!

    1. Oh, that seems cruel! I’ve been in that situation (injured just when the weather gets perfect) and it truly sucks.

  7. Our highs will be in the 60s next week which is not normal for us for early Sept! I won’t complain but it’s kind of a bit too cool for me? It’s comfortable weather, I am just not ready for what is to come!! So I want more 70 degree days! But I will take what I can get.

My week was hard. The school shooting was so close to home and has really shoot my community. We have avoided talking about it with the boys but since there’s a good chance it will get mentioned at school, we will talk about it with Paul tonight when we get back from the lake and probably go visit the memorial at the church as a family.

Running wise I checked out an Orangetheory fitness class on Tuesday which I loved. I bought a 10 class pack and they threw in 3 extra classes. I think it will be great for the winter months. I did a couple other runs besides that. I will do my long run tomorrow instead of doing it at the lake as the road I run on at my premed is so so boring and has a lot of hills! My race is about 2 weeks away now.

    1. Ooh- your race is coming right up! That’s exciting.
My guess is that the boys will take the shooting in stride, if you explain what happened in a sensitive way. Sadly, it’s a part of life for kids nowadays.
I’ve never done Orangetheory but I’ve heard good things about it. Good luck with the long run!

  8. Congrats on the new kitty! That’s so exciting! We’ve still had pretty warm weather up here – or, as my daughter puts it, “it’s still shorts weather!” We start school on Tues so the weather is a key topic as she figures out a day 1 outfit, haha! Glad the hip is feeling better!!

  9. Foxy! That’s cute. I hope they all start getting along soon! I don’t know how things work with cats, I suppose it takes time.
Our weather is PERFECT right now – high 20s low 30s in the day, and then in the high teens at night and in the mornings. It’s gorgeous! I know you said you didn’t want to move to Canada but….

  10. Hahaha. I could live in Canada let’s say… April-October. After that I’d be miserable.
Yes, cats take a long time to warm up to each other, and possibly never do. Hopefully we at least get to a point where they all tolerate each other- but the hope is that Muffin and Foxy will eventually be friends. Charlotte is too old and cranky to be friends.

  11. I like Foxy for a name! You can build on it in so many ways – Mr. Fox, Foxy McFoxerson, Red Foxx, etc.

Having a baby animal around makes it tough to get workouts in. Doggo pounces on me if I try to do pushups. It’s hard enough to get motivation to do pushups, and adding the extra step of going into another room and shutting the door means that I often fall off the pushup bandwagon these days. Oh well.

One cat per human is the correct number of cats to have! I’m saying this as someone who grew up in a household of three with three cats. There were brief stints with two cats and with four cats, so that’s how I learned about the 1:1 ratio. There are times when I think it would be nice to have a sibling for Doggo, but pretty quickly I realize that two dogs would be more than double the work.

    1. Oh, I like that 1:1 ratio rule! And it seems about right- I don’t think we could handle a fourth cat (and I’m pretty sure my husband would say NO!) Ha… I like “Mr. Fox.” Maybe that will be his nickname when he gets bigger.

    2. If I had the 1:1 ratio, I’d probably get arrested for hoarding. Thirteen cats would probably be a bridge too far. Though I’d love it!

  12. What a busy week…in a good way.

I’ve had as many as 5 cats. But 2 is enough for now since one of them is a handful.. Foxy is a cute name for a cute cat.

  13. I’m glad your hip is mostly feeling better and you were able to get in a trail run!

I can’t say our weather has been beautiful here — it was slightly cooler during the week but this weekend it’s been back in the 100s and it’s supposed to be 106 today! Fall feels soooooooo far away. Fortunately I was still able to get in all the miles I wanted this week, which is probably gonna end up being my peak week for my upcoming 50K (less than a month out now) since I’m gonna be volunteering at a 100 miler next weekend and won’t be able to get in a long run. I can’t believe it’s already almost September!

    1. It is September! But you’re right… fall feels very far away, for us. You have some fun stuff coming up- I have to pick a race to focus on. The next one I’m registered for is in March, and I need something in between!

  14. Foxy is a perfect name and suits their coloring and build so well!
A and I were just thinking that we need to get some longer hikes in because our Grand Canyon trip is coming up and we haven’t been doing much since he has been so sick… I don’t want to waste this trip of a lifetime, gah!
Three sounds like the perfect number of cats for you. And you know what, Jenny–I feel like whatever the weather, you’re going to get your runs and movement in, so there’s that! Nice weather is a bonus for you, but not a make-or-break element as it might be for someone else (like me).

  15. That weather!!!! Jenny. Put your fingers in your ears while I talk about how lovely and cool it is where I am right now. The sun is shining but I could use a sweater while sitting on the deck and it is pretty much perfection. Oh wait, I guess you need to cover your eyes.

Awww. Foxy is such a cute name and I love that you have three cats and I bet they will all get used to each other with time!!

    1. Sigh. I know- my son is telling me about the beautiful weather up in Illinois. I’ll just have to live vicariously for a couple months!

  16. I tweaked my lower back last week when I was lifting, and the next day I did a yoga with Adriene workout for pelvic health. It got those SI joints back in place, and I felt great after. Just my recommendation…

Your kitty is so cute!! My son’s GF has a yellow tabby, and man, what a personality! I have been hearing more about yellow cat energy… I hope you enjoy Foxy!

    1. Okay Wendy, I will check out that video! I’m trying to fix this myself instead of going to the chiropractor.
Foxy is very affectionate and lively- but I think as he gets older he’ll calm down and just be sweet and loveable.

  17. Awww, congrats on the cute new kitty! I’ve always loved orange tabbies. Also, that’s great that you didn’t really notice your hip much during your runs.Hope it stays that way!

    1. Thanks Debbie! I also LOVE orange tabbies, and they’re usually very sweet and affectionate. We also need some boy cat energy in our house!

  18. Foxy is adorable! People called us “crazy cat people” when we had 3 cats, but hey, the more the merrier! Well, hopefully it will all be merry at your house soon enough. A year later and we still have hissy cat fights but I guess they are getting better? We are taking them both on a camping trip together in September so I think they will have to bond at that point. LOL!
Hooray for marching band and football games again!

    1. Right now I’m just hoping for peaceful coexistence. I initially thought that Muffin and Foxy would be friends, but I’m slowly realizing that was too optimistic. Oh well- at least life isn’t boring! Good luck with the camping trip, lol. i can’t even imagine taking my cats camping.

  19. You had a great week! And you named the cat: Foxy wouldn’t be my first choice, but it could be worse LOL and if your daughter named him, then all is well 🙂 I do hope the girls will warm up to him.

  20. Hahahaha! That map!

Ok but it’s really pretty here today! So maybe something is shifting in our favor?

Foxy is adorable! Congratulations on your new addition! And great job on your workouts, as always!

  21. oh, what a beautiful kitty! Foxy! I hope the other two warm up to the newbie.

Picking a pet name is hard, but they always end up with lots of nicknames anyways, right?
