walkers walk… but runners fly

It’s Friday!!!

Even though I work Saturdays, I still feel that happy Friday vibe. And this is the last Friday of the school year! Next week is exams, and then my daughter’s junior year will be done.

Summer is our worst season, weather-wise. By August I’ll be angrily ranting and raving about the heat (and hurricane threats- it’s either horribly hot or storming down here). But right now I’m feeling optimistic about the increasing daylight and relaxed schedule, so let’s talk about some late-May Happy Things!

It’s been way too long since I’ve shared a cat photo (at least several days, and that’s just wrong!) These two have been getting along really well:

They don’t snuggle and play like Foxy and Sylvie do, but they coexist peacefully. Sometimes I almost feel like Foxy is left out- or rather, he suffers from middle-child syndrome. Muffin and Sylvie somehow demand more attention, and I have to remember to give Foxy lots of love. I make sure to reassure him that he’s my favorite boy (which I can say in all honesty, since he’s the only boy.)

Mommy’s favorite boy!

SHU recommended this book on her blog, and went so far as to text it to me because she was sure I would like it.

I ran right out to get it from the library. When I read the inside flap I hesitated… is this going to be kind of boring??? It’s about an “enigmatic librarian” who provides the perfect book for each library patron, helping them fulfill their dreams. Hmmm. Well- Sarah really liked it so I gave it a try.

I couldn’t stop reading it! I’m about halfway through and I don’t want to put it down. I have a feeling this book will be like The Correspondent, where I thought “I don’t want to read a book about an elderly woman writing letters!” and then I loved it. I will report back SOON when I’ve finished it.

Last Saturday was so nice, I’m going to try to replicate it. Work in the morning, a nap in the afternoon and then intense session at the gym (late afternoon on Saturday when it’s pretty empty). THEN, takeout from Chipotle. What I didn’t mention last week is that I will also be enjoying a Coke Zero with this meal. MUAHAHAHAHAHA!

This week, Kae wrote about her ongoing battle with soda (she has given it up again and is doing great!) I confessed in the comment section that I’ve become more and more addicted to Coke Zero. I have one a week, a big fountain drink when I get my takeout- and the really bad thing is, I look forward to it immensely and get sad when I’ve finished it. This doesn’t seem good- I think I’m going to need an intervention soon. But, as Birchie would say, today is not that day, and right now I’m thrilled with the thought that Coke Zero is only a day away.

Do you have a “middle pet?”

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Summer vibes are still going strong around here! I’m loving the new rhythm of my weeks. Having two days off

Books!!!

The month of June is off to a great reading start. Quantity-wise, that is. Here’s the first book I read:

Finding “Balance?”

Hi there! It’s time for Tuesday Topics, and today’s topic is How do you find balance during summer chaos? It’s funny

  1. Oh, that sounds like an interesting book. I might need a lighter read after I finish Kin — it’s heavier than I expected.

I don’t have any fun plans for the weekend — and I just realized it’s a 3-day weekend — I guess that gives me more time to figure out something fun.

    1. Yes, you can have three days of fun! You probably have time to finish Kin. ; ) I haven’t read that one but I keep hearing about it- mostly good things.

  2. Jenny. Jenny. Jenny. You have one Coke Zero a week, you look forward to it, and then you’re sad it’s gone? That just sounds like normal behaviour of someone looking forward to a treat. What is the problem with that? If you were drinking 12 a day, I might consider that an issue. But one a week? BFD. Just enjoy it! Life is for living! WHAT ARE WE HERE FOR IF NOT TO ENJOY THINGS????? If you think I sound bossy, I AM BEING BOSSY!!! I fail to see an issue here, I support your Coke Zero habit, and I look forward to the glass of wine I will have this evening as my own Friday treat! Live it up! We’re here for a good time not a long time so have a good time the sun doesn’t shine every day.
    YOLO!!!!!!!!!!

    1. WHOA. This is the best reframe ever. YOLO! Good time not a long time! I’ll stop worrying about it. But if I start to work my way up to 12 a day I’ll call for an intervention.

    2. What she said!!! And I say this as someone who was regularly drinking MULTIPLE sodas DAILY (and many times the regular sugary version, not only diet 😳), what you have going on is NOT a problem!! Please do not cut that out. If I could have only one a week I would absolutely never quit but for me it was wayyyyy more than that. We also eat out way more than you do in general so I was having them alone (like picking up a fountain drink during my work day) and then also wanting when we went out at night or on weekends too, etc. My thing is a whole other situation!! Keep enjoying your Coke Zero!

  3. School is officially done here and I am once again wishing I would have summers off because it would be so nice! Oh well, at least there’s less traffic now until school starts up the first week of August. I also can’t complain too much about the weather so far — it’s only been in the 100s a handful of days, but I know the heat is coming!

I think you should enjoy your weekly Coke Zero! There are definitely worse habits to have and we all need something to look forward to. I drink an Olipop or Poppi soda almost daily at work, and I know they’re considered better for you sodas, but the problem is, they’re expensive! But I enjoy them and they give me something to look forward to at work.

I’m excited for the 3 day weekend! I’m going up to my parents’ house and we should have lots of pool time.

    1. Yes, I’ll drink a couple Zevia colas throughout the week- again, “better” but they are expensive.
School starts and ends EARLY there!!! And I thought we were early. I think I’ve heard that about AZ though. Hopefully you at least have a more laid back vibe during the summer? Oh- and just out of curiosity, what flavor of Olipop do you like? I tried the cola and didn’t really like it. I like the orange though.

      1. I actually do like the cola one but my favorites are probably the cream soda, cherry cola and orange cream!

  4. I called that book a “gentle, kind” read, but I don’t remember anything about it. Ha!

The middle child is whoever doesn’t need all the help at the moment. Right now it’s Zelda because Hannah is High Maintenance. H has had GI issues and now she’s on a long-term antibiotic that she hates to take, so feeding her is like a 20-minute affair twice a day. Poor Zelda is sort of getting the shaft because of it. That’s okay. The pendulum will swing the other way soon enough!

    1. Oh, poor Hannah. I guess that’s not really the kind of attention she wants! Yes before you know it, Zelda will be the needy one. In the meantime give her an extra cuddle.

  5. You know, there’s something special about things that we limit ourselves on. The way you feel about Coke Zero is the way I feel about prosecco or apple cider. I rarely have it, but that’s exactly what makes it all the more enjoyable. And honestly, I think alcohol is worse than a Coke Zero. I order a Coke Zero at a bar if I’m trying to avoid alcohol! 😂
So my advice is: allow yourself TWO Coke Zeros this week!! And enjoy every sip!

    1. Catrina, you are an ENABLER. I cannot have two Coke Zeros this week!!! But I’ll enjoy my one even more now : )

  6. I too have had my struggles with pop/soda over the years, especially root beer…it’s quite an enjoyable reward at times.
Your blog exudes warmth and joyfulness. Yes to more of that in the world. Thanks for visiting mine.

    1. Oh thank you!!! That’s a great compliment. And… pop! That’s what we called it growing up in the midwest.

  7. I just put that Aoyama book on my library holds list! I can’t wait to check it out. I, too, have a soda problem and it’s name is Diet Coke. But, I know there are worse problems to have and I have bigger fish to fry right now; however, I do hope I can get back to not letting it be my main source of hydration again at some point. Congrats to you and your daughter for being so close to ending the school year – we have an entire month left! I am so ready for summer (if not the heat), haha!

    1. Someday I want to do a taste test- Diet Coke vs. Coke Zero. I feel like Coke Zero tastes better, but it could be all in my head. Anyway… it’s so delicious.
You guys end late, but I’m sure you start later than us- we go back to school mid-August.

  8. That book does found interesting. I loved the Correspondent.

Now I’m reading a book a 100 year old man helping a dying 10 years accomplish his 5 goals.

  9. If it’s a fountain coke, it’s probably full of ice. So…not that bad! And yes to what Nicole said. It’s not like you go through a case every week.

Your boy kitty is absolutely gorgeous. What a handsome man! He looks so incredibly soft and sweet.

  10. This is the first weekend in a while where I have no plans and I am so looking forward to just hanging out and doing nothing! The weather looks less than fabulous so I’m sure there will be a lot of lazing with a good book.

The book you picked up sounds interesting – look forward to hearing what you think. I just finished Theo of Golden and am more than half way through Sara Hall’s memoir. My TBR list is so long!

    1. Yes, I have a lot of books on my TBR! Hopefully I can get in some good lazing with a good book this weekend. Sara Hall’s memoir is probably really good!

  11. I read the Library book this week! My only complaint is that it needs a more memorable title, otherwise it was a flawless book and I enjoyed it very much.

Yay for Muffin and Sylvie snuggles!

I think that one Coke Zero per week plus another as a post race treat is very moderate. Even if you dream about it days in advance and even if it makes you sad to finish. I don’t really drink soda either, but I had a very rare encounter with a Dr. Pepper this week and it was just the best thing ever. It feels like a one-off, but I really enjoyed it.

    1. Yes, the title could be better. But it gets extra points for having a cat on the cover.
I’ve never been a Dr. Pepper drinker- that seems like a very specialized taste. But I can see how a nice cold one could hit the spot in certain circumstances!

  12. I’m glad you’re getting advice to just enjoy the Coke Zero. I have way more than you do, too many, I won’t say. I should cut way back. SIGH.

    1. Julie, do not tempt me! You all are being enablers!!! I could drink one every single day and be sooooo happy….

    1. I think you would like this one. Cats are only a peripheral part of one story, but I still love that there’s one on the cover.

  13. Listen. You can pry my diet dr pepper from my cold, dead hands. I love it so much. I quit it once when I had my tonsils out, but it’s my favorite. And iced coffee (tiny splash of creamer, no sugar). Yummmmm.

I’ll have to add that book to my list!

I love all the kitties! Currently, we only have two pets, but we did have three at one point and there was definitely a middle child lol.

EEEK! Last week of school! We’re pretty much all done, other than his elementary school clapout. I don’t know why it’s so late, but he promised me we could go.

  14. I TOTALLY agree with Nicole. There is NOTHING WRONG with looking forward to something and then being sad when it’s over. That happens for SO MANY THINGS, but we only place a morality clause on it when it’s food/drink. One Coke Zero a week is FINE. You are FINE. Enjoy the hell out of that Coke Zero!
